Let's change the titled have one on fires/hires

Whole lot of smoke saying Jimbo about to get fired.

A&M was stupid to pay him what they offered. In fact they were stupid to want him. Anybody looking at his final 2 years at FSU could see that he wa doing the job half heartedly in an attempt to wrangle much more knew from FSU. You should want to avoid a coach like that.

FSU seems to be having the last laugh. Jimbo has achieved nothing better than top recruiting at A&M (sound familiar?) while FSU once again seems to be rolling along with a very bright football future playing for championships.

Rumor is that A&M wants Elko...
He was a great DC, including at A&M. So it make sense he would be on their short list. But my guess is that the first big shot is at Oregon's Dan Lanning, who was DC for Kirby Smart at UGA.

also kalen deboer…someone carolina should monitor if he’s not courted by a&m.

eta: dan campbell would be interesting on the recruiting trail, but he’s probably an nfl only guy with his makeup.

Aggies do love their alums, so if Campbell's agent were to contact A&M and say he's interested, I bet they would pursue him. He's wildly charismatic enough to build a solid staff that can recruit TX like gangbusters.

Miss St fires Zach Arnett. Tough job to replace Mike Leach.

Would Willie Fritz give up what he has built at Tulane, which is best team in AAC back to back, to try to make Miss St a winner in the SEC? Would Miss ST have a chance to get Jeff Lebby, former Ole Miss OC and current OU OC, away from his alma mater to be an SEC HC? Would Miss ST want to look closely at Memphis HC Ryan Silverfild, who has kept the Tigers winning post-Novell? Barry Odom has turned UNLV around in his first year as HC there - he also has been DC at Memphis, Missouri, and Arkansas and HC at Missouri.

The downside to Miss St - number 2 school and football program in a small state, trying to battle the likes of Bama, LSU, Auburn, Tennessee, Florida, Georgia, and now Texas, A&M, OU, as well as Ole Miss and Arkansas.

Arnett should have an easy time getting a good DC job.

UNC should hire Arnett and tell Gene to enjoy retirement…

Tell Mack to enjoy retirement, and the new HC will almost certainly replace every single staff member. Though many new HCs will keep at least one to help smooth things with recent signees to keep a class largely intact. Of course, the Portal may have rendered that unnecessary.

That will be fine to but let’s hope they don’t keep Gene to smooth things over…He has been a disaster…

a&m not long ago was able to use the “texas school in the sec”, but not anymore…it’s also a luxury not to have to get on a plane to recruit in that talent rich state.

Who would hire this new DC, and what power would that DC have?

Those questions must be asked because of the way Mack operates. Mack expects that all assistants be people he likes and that all are to report to him. So that means no DC has power to replace any position coach who technically is under him. That means, for example, that only Mack can replace Cross.

So we get back always to THE issue:, which is the exact one that got Mack fired at Texas: he sees his staff as his personal set of buddies with whom he wants to work at the time, and only Mack has any say about them. Texas people forced Mack to make changes there, and they demanded a DC who was not any part of Mack's long time buddy circle. Manny Diaz got the job, and Mack hated it, and everybody around the program knew that, and Mack fired Diaz as soon as he could. Later, when Mack again fought against making any changes to his staff he got fired.

Mack likes Chizik. Part of that is that Chizik is not the type to tell Mack straight up: replace Cross now. Chizik will defer to Mack. If Chizik is replaced by order of Bubba, so ordered by boosters, then Mack will demand to name the new DC or at least have total power over the rest of the staff on the D side. Having that control means Mack would still have near total control over the D. That means we would still be spinning our wheels in the mud.

It really is a waste of time and money to buy out Chizik if Mack remains.

And that is the reason it was beyond stupid for A&M to agree to vote Yes on Texas being added. A&M's position should have been Yes on OU, NO on Texas, and it should have fought hard publicly. It's fight should have included discussion to leave the SEC.

But Aggies have more than a century of earned Aggie jokes.

The Aggies baldy need alum Dan Campbell, now Detroit Lions HC, to return to his alma mater. he is eminently likable, and very successful by Lions standards, and he is pure Lone Star State to the nucleus of every cell in his body.

Syracuse has interviewed Dan Mullen. He's the most successful coach in Miss St history. He would be a huge hire for Syracuse.

AS expected, IU fires Tom Allen. His case shows something that must always be kept in mind when hiring a HC: is the HC himself most reposonsible for his best successes, or are those successes largely because of a coordinator or 2?

Allen's best season at IU was 2019, when the Hoosiers finished 8-5. In the shortened 2020 season, IU was 6-2.

So what was key about 2019? Kalen DeBoer came in as IU OC. Yes, Kalen DeBoer who is now HC at undefeated Washington.

The coaching star of IU in 2019 was not Allen but DeBoer.

Louisville native, former UofL QB, and Oregon OC Will Stein may be on Houston's new HC list.

A really good AD, who was not desperate, would have known all of this before, and taken this information into consideration before he hired Mack

Reports that Syracuse's top target is UGA DB coach Fran Brown. It would not be the most impressive move. but he is not just on the UGA staff, he is reported to be favored a good deal as truly up and coming by Kirby Smart. So win a guy with all the SEC success that Smart has really likes, respects, a young position coach, the odds are great that the guy could become a fine HC.

UNC's hiring committee likely would avoid the foul odor of a guy with important SEC experience to hire a young slick talker. For those who have forgotten, Fedora was young and a very slick talker.

Fed also wasn't the first choice. Not many people wanted the job because of everything that was going on.

If this is indeed going to be Mack’s last year coming up..Even though their are rumors he will step down after the Bowl Game or sooner…UNC needs to be ready to go after the DC at UGA…

Glenn Schumann Was under Saban and Smart at Alabama and then was the First guy Smart hired at UGA…

2008–2011Alabama (SA)
2011–2014Alabama (GA)
2016–2018Georgia (ILB)
2019–presentGeorgia (co-DC/ILB

Apparenty the first choice was Chris Peterson. However much we could get the Med school and hospital to accommodate his family in special ways, the odds of him coming to EST were always very slim.

There is a long history of UNC picking somebody as top candidate who almost certainly will not take the job, while ignoring very good people who want it, and then settling for crap. WE could have landed Jim Donnan or Mark Richt - they were both ignored, even ith Donnan so openly campaigning for tit that he was guaranteed to be fired by UGA. Pete Carroll was very interetested, but UNC ignored him too.

That is so much time under the 2 biggest winning SEC coaches of the past 30 years that you know every UNC basketball booster will fight tooth and nail to keep him out.

Unless he is PC in some major way. Is he avowedly unChristian? Gay? Co-chair of the UGA Friends of the non-Binary club? A climate hysteric?

Dabo fires OL and DE coaches.

In other news, Mack keeps gushing about the greatest staff he's ever assembled, that got smoked all the way around by Dabo's staff

Fresno State's Jeff Tedford steps away because of health issues. Fresno is 8-4 right now, after finishing 10-4 last year. In the 5 years of Mack 2.0, Tedford has led Fresno St to 2 final rankings in the Top 25 and had 3 teams with at least 10 wins.

Yea we get it but it’s more of a statement against UNC…How many 10 win seasons has UNC had in the last 50 years with different coaches…

It’s like a Man or Woman that has been married 5 or 6 times but it’s never their fault…Soon or later UNC has to look in the mirror and say it’s me not them…

Miss ST hired OU OC Jeff Lebby as HC. Now,OU QB Dillon Gabriel, who started as a true freshman at UCF under then OC Jeff Lebby is in the portal. I would say there are good odds that Gabriel intends to play for Lebby next year in Bulldog maroon.

Austin Peay HC Scotty Walden to be UTEP HC. Because I am a Tennessean, that is a move that interests me. APSU is about 50 miles from Murfeesobor, where Middle tenneesse is. Ans the MTSU job is also open. if Walden were to get the MTSU HC job, his first years as a 1A (FBS) coach would be easy transition because he already knows the area HS scene since and out, as well as the area college programs against which he would recruit and play- such as Western Kentucky and Jacksonville St.

But UTEP will be a whole new world for him.

Good for Dillon that has the freedom to go the exact place he feels is best for him in terms of NIL $, better coaches, or whatever. But damn if this doesn't taint the sport. He's at a top-10/15 program and easily secured the starting spot. They had a top 10 offense.... they're going to be in the SEC. Ok has a huge stadium, rabid fanbase with a nice history.... wtf. The co-eds in stillwater must be ugly.

Predictions coming in for Gabriel heading to Oregon. The Ducks play both Ohio State and Michigan next year.

James Madison has hired Holy Cross's Bob Chesney. That is a bold hire of the HC of a small elite private school playing top tier 1AA (FCS) football by a state school that just moved up to 1A. That 1AA tie may be the reason the JMU people know how good Chesney is.
