Are there actually people out there who call all soft drinks "Cokes" regardless of manufacturer/flavor?
Yes. Lots of us. But not quite in the way you are thinking.

Exactly, and I'll go further. If you go up to someone and say, "I'd like a Coke, please." They're going to do one of two things:
1.) They'll give you a Coca-Cola.
2.) They will say, "We serve Pepsi products here. Would Pepsi be okay, or would you like something else?"
That's it. They're not going to ask you, "Which coke would you like? We have Pepsi, Mountain Dew, Dr. Pepper, Orange Crush, root beer, etc." Nobody will do that.
Diet Cokes are fine. Just don't day youre going to get a coke and come back with a Diet Mountain Dew.Hey Cool- remember the time you thought it was "post" and not "poast"? Its happening again.

Rivals needs a dislike button. You never have to worry about me coming back with any sort of Mountain Dew. But I might come back with a diet DP or diet A&W

It's a clear cola designed to taste like Pepsi with a clear appearance. It tastes slightly different though, and that slight difference is heavenly. Is Crystal Pepsi lemon-lime or cola and just clear?
Or if my desk were next to yours at the office I would say "Cool, Im going across the street to get a coke and a pack of nabs. ...And furthermore, my snack may or may not be a pack of Lance Toaschee crackers.
