I must admit I wish Carolina had a true point guard like Clark who is a baller and a winner and was the main reason Virginia had those two great games against Duke but last night Black took off the head of the beast and the other bodies did indeed fall.

Clark stands at only 5’9 and Black’s 6’8 frame was just too much for the Wahoos point guard.

For those many non believers who said Coach Davis was way over his head in leading this team without giving him a fair amount of time to get the team playing the way he wanted them to look are very quiet right now for some reason.

No question in my mind and many others that Coach Davis made the coaching move of the year to this point by putting Black on Clark which caught Virginia totally off guard….Without the engine being able to run the show the offense put up a record 13 points in the first half…

Anyone else want to question why Leaky Black gets so much playing time…I didn’t think so…

And his performance on shutting down Griffin was critical in the dook game. Unfortunately (and I admit I have only seen VT a couple of times) it doesn't seem like they have that perimeter aspect that only one guy can really do for them. All their starters are threats from deep. And it appears they have multiple guys who can initiate their offensive sets.

Clark's issue is this. Virginia has always run the little side ball screen that gets him into the lane in about the 12 ft area. Virginia historically has had shooters to kick out to. Not now. A horrible shooting team and without an offensive minded big man. He comes off that screen and suddenly he is in the lane with no options. At his height, that is a tough predicament

Yeah, I referred to exactly this on gary's quick stuff thread, the way I put it was we cut off the head of the snake by having Leaky shut Clark down, it just ended any offensive flow UVa could have. The way Hubert has used leaky has been masterful coaching this season. Keep in mind this was a kid that very few were happy was back playing for us this season, he was seen as the weak spot and really, his role on this team up to this season has been hard to understand. But Hubert has clearly defined Leaky's role, it isn't that he is a great defender or handles the ball well for a guy his length, it is Leaky, just be a player, just go out and play the game you love, enjoy the experience and teach the younger kids. It is the faith Hubert had in Leaky, even when he struggled, even when Hubert held him out of a game as a starter, there is a trust there. Ever since that game Leaky didn't start, a switch seems to have flipped in him and now his confidence is soaring, the confidence of this team is soaring, and Leaky has a lot ot do with that. So does his coach!

To stray a bit from the question of this thread, Hubert also did something that fans here didn't understand. For a good string of games Hubert pretty much went to an iron 5, Puff would get a few minutes but for the most part it was that iron 5 in some games multiple guys played all 40mins. We were all screaming PLEASE get some bench guys in, you are killing this teams legs for any late season and post season wins. But ya know what happened, he got the stamina up to the point that they actually could play 40 full minutes effectively. A kid that struggles to play 5mins a game does not have the game legs to play 20min and our iron 5 has had to figure out how to go from near 30mins to near 40. It has made us sharper, guys are not looking over their shoulder if they screw up. A guy like Caleb can start out shooting bad but you know somewhere in that 40mins Caleb will get hot, let any decent shooter shoot themselves in to a hot streak and they will drill you. Our starting 5 does not worry about getting hot and being pulled and risk cooling off. That is a bigger point than many realize and that was by plan by Hubert, again masterful.

I have said for the past couple years that Leaky will leave as a beloved Tar Heel. His trajectory was very similar to beloved guys like Theo and Manuel who took 3 years before taking key leadership roles in their senior year.

Leak may add a 5th year, but he has been crucial to this Heel team. People will compare others to him in the future, asking if we have a Leaky type lock down glue guy.
