Daily Drop: Is It Fair To Compare Hubert Davis To Matt Doherty?

Doherty told everyone when he interviewed that he felt loyalty to his staff and felt it just wrong to ditch any of them after 1 season at ND. All agreed he could make that decision. However, Dean Smith was not sitting there at the interview, and he made that a major issue long before classes started for Fall semester.

Doherty was not given the trio of Felton, May, and McCants. He recruited them and signed them.
👀 Believe what you need to...

Nonetheless, that trio would have come to UNC whether or not Doh got the job --- May and Felton for sure, and more than lilely McCants. There's really nothing that mitigates his failure here -- it was his own doing, but TBH, we should've hired Phil once Roy balked.

Ultimately though, the fault on our end was Gut not timing his exit better and catching Roy at a bad time.

The only happy ending in the whole episode was ending up with a Roy do-over.
You have no idea how strongly I wanted Phil Ford as our head coach, I wanted Phil more than Roy and that is absolute fact. I get why it didn't happen, I just did not and do not, nor will l ever agree with the decision to not even consider Phil.

He would have been if not for his second DUI conviction in ‘99. He was being groomed for the HC position. But he blew .24(3 times the limit) only two years after blowing .26 on a recruiting trip to Michigan in ‘97. So while I think Phil would have been a good coach, the school couldn’t promote him after that.
