Dale JR ...... retiring at end of 2017

This will be a HUGE hit to NASCAR...even though he has not won that much he is still the most popular driver by FARRR!!!!!

NASCAR has been dead for years. It became a "pretty boy" sport over the last 10 years or so and completely alienated their base. I remember when it used to be the #2 revenue-producing sport, behind the NFL...they just couldn't leave well enough alone and started getting cute...selling out for bigger tracks, bigger sponsors, etc.

Jr just got married recently, and I'm sure he's just ready for the next chapter.

NFL better pay attention...they keep inching football away from being "football."

They've devolved into "cookie cutter" cars and drivers, changing the rules to build enthusiasm. I loved it when you could distinguish the different makes of cars instantly. These days I can't tell the difference unless I look at the grill. Used to watch regularly, hardly watch anymore.

Agreed. "Race Day" used to be a thing growing up. Now it's a complete afterthought. Most weekends, I forget a race is even occurring.

I'm hoping that with him semi-retired, NASCAR will have no choice but to pull the sport back to its regional roots. Re-install the races at Rockingham, North Wilkesboro, etc.

Harry Gant was my grandmas second cousin and we used to go to all the races from Talladega to Richmond . Back then we were seeing half the races in person and watching the rest every Sunday on tv. I never will forget waiting to cross the street to get into CMS and noticing a mid 40 year old couple waiting to cross also. This was in the late 80's and he was wearing slacks and a golf shirt and the lady had on a dress with heels. I remember thinking WTF!!! I had never seen that at a track before. But that was the beginning of the end for NASCAR. They sold us ol Southern boys who had made them what they were out. They reaped the benefits early on but long ter was disastrous. Back then I never thought I would see the day when the state of California would have more NASCAR dates than 2 Carolinas combined! The final death blow for me was N. Wilkesboro,Rockingham and taking away the Labor Day race from Darlington(sac religious!!!!). It's never been the same for me since.
