Debose Has Had A Busy Summer

By Justin Rowland
Tar Heel Illustrated Staff Writer

THI first spoke with Zion Debose before the summer really got started. We spoke with him this week to find out what the last six weeks have looked like.

Debose was already a coveted recruit on June 1, when he first spoke with THI. His 47-tackle, eight-sack sophomore season led to offers from UNC, Duke, NC State, ECU and Charlotte, and it caused plenty of programs outside of the state to take notice and develop some interest in the North Rowan prospect.

Because Debose’s summer has been so busy to date many coaches at those schools now know a lot more about him. And he knows more about those schools in turn.

Debose has camped at UNC, Duke, Charlotte, ECU, Clemson and Penn State. Those were all one-day camps. While Clemson and Penn State have not offered those two programs are recruiting the state of North Carolina with some success these days and figure to be formidable if they do offer Debose.

“I enjoyed the Clemson camp,” Debose said. “It wasn’t really a prospect camp. It was really for all ages. They went over a bunch of stuff, like drills and hand moves and one-on-ones. There was some pretty big guys there so I liked the competition, of course. I talked to a bunch of coaches from Clemson and they said they were pretty interested. I talked to their D-Line coach and my recruiter for my part of the region and they said they’ve been looking into me and want to recruit me. They said they’re trying to find time for me to come back down there. They said they want to offer me. They just want me to come back down there to go over some things.

“Penn State is interested in me, too. They’ve said they’re interested. They said they like my speed, my get off, my GPA, my size and my character,” Debose said.

Debose could soon have some out-of-state options but for now all of his offers are from in-state schools. Of those schools he’s as familiar with UNC as with any of the others.

“The UNC camp was great,” Debose told TarHeelIllustrated.com. “They did it close to (how) the NFL (does combines). They took our numbers, we did 40’s and stuff. We did one-on-ones and we also had an individual period where we were able to learn more about our position. We learned a lot to take home with us and got some things we could use throughout the season. Overall it was great.”
Defensive line coach Tray Scott had a chance to work extensively with Debose.

“I talked to him before and after the camp,” Debose said. “He just told me to stay in the weight room. He told me to work on a few things and he told me he would stay in touch when they’re able to talk to me and they’re able to reach out around September 1.”

Debose said he also attended a junior day in Chapel Hill earlier in the year. He saw many of the facilities set aside for the football programs but hasn’t gotten much in the way of an academic tour.

“It’s a pretty good school,” Debose concluded, referring to UNC.
