Is the biggest surprise that Surratt will start? Does that mean he has made a nice, big leap in understanding how to play LB? If so, his skills set could make him formidable. He can run down the fastest RBs.

Is it much of a surprise that Antonio Williams is 3rd team RB? He obviously will play a good deal, but he still is listed as 3rd team.

Simmons and Khafre Brown have made big moves at WR. Freshman QBs and a couple of freshman WRs on the depth chart.

The DL is very young and inexperienced. Seniors Crawford and Strowbridge are the stars, but the other 4 on the depth chart are a barely played Soph, a redshirt freshman, a Juco transfer Soph, and a true freshman.

Hopefully this team will be an example of 'too young to be scared and so played above their heads.'

we are bigger on defense at key positions...that will bode well early and late in the season if we stay healthy.

If the S&C has been as good as presented, then we should be reasonably healthy.

When the young guys on the DL pick up some experience, the 2 deep will be sound and able to avopid being gassed in the 4th quarter.

Kind of shocked about Barnes not being on the first team. Also, Antonio Williams 3rd string. Lastly, Corey bell not listed as a wr on the depth chart after hearing so much about how good he was looking after the switch.

McKethan has played so well that he has moved just ahead of Barnes at RG. Both are going to be very good, IMO.

Can’t even find Bell on this site. I’d bet he’s behind Toe Groves at the 3rd WR spot. We’re looking for 12 receivers to rotate according to Longo.

When I look at the amount of youth that we’ve got on offense, I think we’re going to go through some growing pains this year but be very good in the near future. We have some hosses on that OL. And much needed help for our defense is on the way.

Interesting. We’re playing a lot of youth this year. At least it bodes well for the future.

Can't argue with that. You don't think that's a big liability against the Gamecocks though? A young, inexperienced team, playing an older, veteran-lead team with a lot of depth?

We are a huge underdog and rightfully so. SC has, from people in the know, its best defensive unit under Muschamp. The D line is said to be SEC top 3 level. We have 3 starters on the O line that basically have not played a snap plus a totally new offense.

This may be the most intriguing Carolina football game ever. Mack is the coach but the offensive and defensive ideologies are not his but he has bought in that this may be the quickest way to turn this program around. I loved what he said a day or so ago. Basically, the players are prepared, have the ability, and we have enough(he expects them to be able to execute against SC). If they fail, it will fall on the shoulders of that groups coach and he will hold that coach responsible for the groups success. Mack is in a totally different mindset than his first time around with the Heels.

The last couple years Carolina did not have a Division 1 level defense. First down off tackle runs of 9, 12, 14 yards a pop was the standard. We had trouble getting teams into 1 third down situation per touchdown drive. So Batemans defense seems like the quickest fix. Bateman really has the pressure of making his ideology work at a higher level of college football.

So many things to look forward to Saturday. My key will be defense. Bateman will have to call a great game and get off the field regularly. Keep it close and produce a late break.

This is Bateman's first time coaching at this level. He has been successful at much less prestigious programs, but how can one be so certain that he is the "quickest fix" at UNC, and can make UNC competitive enough right off the bat? There are tons of prestigious FBS defensive coordinators that are proven geniuses at this level, like Muschamp, but even that doesn't make up for a lack of talent, experience, and discipline in your players in the first year or two. When you have an unproven guy like Bateman behind the wheel, who knows how that will pan out.

Sure it is. As has been stated by almost every UNC fan who posted about this game, SC is, and should be, the heavy favorite. In fact, if I'm Muschamp and my team can't handily beat a team with less talent, much less experience(starting a true freshman at QB), and one learning new schemes on both sides of the ball, then I have to feel like my team(SC) is in for a rough season.

As far as I'm concerned, under those conditions, SC should be favored by 21 points. There is no excuse for SC not winning this game, none. But we're going to show up and play because you're on our schedule, and because our staff and our players believe they can win. So we'll see how it shakes out.

fair point.

however, he’s also got better athletes now in a scheme that is pretty successful at its core.

By "quickest fix", Batemans system will work with this years Carolina roster. His reputation is he wins with scheme(plug n play) and game planning. Sure his legend was made in the Oklahoma game but he was instrumental in turning the tables on Navys long dominance over Army. He doesn't need 3/4 years of recruiting to be successful(like a traditional new hire might expect to receive). Co-ordinators like Chizik, Muschamp, etc need their players to succeed. Mack is counting heavily on a big positive surprise all year long from Batemans group. They are expected to overachieve.

There’s only so much to be said about the depth chart. We know what it is, we’ve questioned why a couple of guys weren’t on it, and we s discussed our youth. What more can you say? If you have more to add re: the two deep, feel free.

This makes absolutely zero sense to me, so it would help if you could elaborate.

Will Muschamp has won multiple national championships as a DC. He's coached numerous top 10 defenses and teams. While he ultimately failed at Florida, he turned them from a thuggish dumpster fire into the #2 team in the country in only two years thanks to his stellar recruiting skills and coaching ability. Gene Chizik also won a national championship, and has fostered multiple top 10 defenses. Those are two defensive coordinators that are some of the best in the country. Defensive geniuses but also recruiting gurus.

So you're claiming that even though Bateman can't recruit like muschamp or Chizik, his coaching ability is so much better than theirs, that he doesn't even need time, good players, or experience to make a good defense? Bateman is some kind of football Jesus that can take an inexperienced, mediocre roster, and turn it into an elite level squad in year one?

It just doesn't make sense to me. How can you make wild claims like this when Bateman has never coached at this level before? How do you have to gumption to say that Bateman doesn't need good players to succeed, unlike some of those lowly DC's like Muschamp or Chizik. Where are you getting this from?

Holding #4 Oklahoma to 28 points in a game you lose 28-21 is not coaching at this level? Me thinks you are like most gamechickens sucking on the teat of hyped sec relevance.

LOL is that it? One game? That's why Bateman is a way better coach than most coordinators out there like Muschamp or Chizik?

Boy, we probably shouldn't even show up tomorrow. Muschamp's defense is going to look ridiculous compared to the almighty Bateman. We might as well throw in the towel now. Nobody can stop Bateman! He's way too good!

Your last comment proves you are concerned about Bateman and the unknown. As for your comment is that all, absolutely not! You still haven't address the fact that you have been sucking that sec teat trying to be a football team of relevance in CFB and your program from the beginning has failed. It didn't matter what conference you were in or even a independent, you still failed. Based on your football history your team is well... less stellar than UNC's. You are where you ought to be in the middle of the pack or less.

Nope. I have absolutely no idea where you got that from. In fact I am excited to face your defense tomorrow. It will be nice to finally play an overhyped cupcake.

It is completely laughable to insinuate that UNC even comes close to our success the past 4 decades. Even in this decade we finished top 5 in the country. When was the last time UNC did that? You have beaten us twice in 40 years. We have as many division titles as UNC has this decade, and in a much more difficult conference.

Chill out. The fact that this irrelevant game has you guys so tensed up speaks volumes about your uncertainty about winning, despite your braggadocio. You guys are going to slaughter us. Everyone knows that except for our team and our staff. So chill the fork out.

Your history in college football goes back more than four decades. You must take the whole scope of work from the beginning to the end to see that the gamecocks not only have a lower win/loss percentage but also have only one division title and one conference title in your entire history of football. It is kinda sad when I see a fan who has been duped into believing their team is notable or even thought about in football, much less in sports overall. It is the truth that scar has been living off the benefit of the hype of the sec, since the programs has no real history of it's own. Keep baiting folks on our board with your trolling, we have certainly seen it before, although you do try and hide it around your so called desire to discuss the game. The only thing scar has going for it at the moment is living off the sec hype. Another crystal ball for Clemson again and even that will dwindle away. Sucks to be you...

^^^^
Yes, it does. And now that Clemson, a lowly ACC team, has won 2 of the last 3 titles and completely owns your state, you’re pissed. It’s okay, I’m pissed at my team’s mediocrity too.

Well excuse me

Columbia S.C. is the armpit of the south....Stinky, Sweaty and mosquito infested, and have fans like the royal A-hole above!

When was the last SEC title for the lamecocks?

Answer: It hasn't happened yet and probably never will, but they will keep beating their chest about how mighty the SEC is even after Virginia smacked that one tooth out of their mouth in their last trip to Charlotte to face an ACC team....

I'm not predicting a win for the boys in blue, but I and everybody knows that North Carolina fans have more class than South Carolina fans will EVER have!

Who the hell could ever root for a chicken as a mascot?

What was Jonathan smith suspended for? Just glancing at the depth chart and see some names missing like Chris Collins along the dline.

We can use him.
Now we have some depth at LB.

The height of Wake WRs means that Chazz should be important in stopping the passing game across the middle. He has the height and speed to stop the big WRs.

Any news on the lb from Virginia (I think) Asante? Wasn’t he a key pick up at he end of recruiting couple of years ago?

Eugene Asante is a true freshman. He may get some playing time this year, depending upon need and injuries, but I think the staff would like to RS as many of their freshmen as possible. Some will play out of necessity.

Could be wrong, just my guess.

Redshirting some of the freshmen, plus the incoming class for 2020 means we will have a ton of experienced upperclassmen talent on D in 3 years.

Figured as much especially with the return of smith
