Did Carolina Bottom Out at Duke?

It's a great question. From the outside it seems like the final score being less embarrassing would make it less of a bottom but the real question is does the feeling of utter helplessness that the team must have felt in the first 3 quarters make them more determined to change things moving forward or more resigned to a lost season. From what we've seen so far it's hard not to expect the latter.

We won the 2nd half. But does that reflect a reversal of our decline . . . or a dead cat bounce?

As someone who as had optimistic expectations repeatedly smashed this season, I'll hope for an amazing turnaround, but I won't hold my breath.

I thought HD had bottomed out before Saturday, then I saw the starting lineup. Nah, he's still digging. Until he bottoms out the team will be going down with him.

Has he tried a 5-guard starting lineup yet?

We're already the shortest team in the ACC, but we could get shorter.

AJ,

Is there a scenario where HD loves this program to the extent that he would self-reflect, admit to himself he has underachieved and voluntarily resign knowing that someone else can better lead this program moving forward?

I have no idea. I don't want to guess or even speculate on that. What my gauge right now is he's committed to winning games with this team. When it comes time to evaluate he will.

Over his tenure we’ve seen the ceiling and the bottom, both. My guess is that we’ll continue to live somewhere in between as long as he’s there. Mediocre, top 20 team. Meh.

WW, I have seen this team at times, when they have really been beaten down in a game come out and play inspired ball, I felt they did in that second half vs duke sat. Did UNC bottom out, they may have in that first half. This was not a case of duke calling off the dogs in that second half, duke played the second half as if they wanted to beat us by 50 if the could. It was UNC really had nothing to lose so they went out and played with what they had in them to play with. They finished the fight, they lost on points but they were not knocked out, they were knocked down early but they stood in the fight late and delivered their own shots.

If this team could put 2 halves together like we did vs duke in that second half we can beat any team in the country.

Wow, I totally disagree. I agree that UNC kept fighting, but I saw a dook team that totally lost interest with about 11 minutes left. Even ScheyerFace stopped trying, based on play calls and rotations. They absolutely could have won by 30+.

Which goes to show, the rivalry as we once knew it and enjoyed it, is dead. There's not the animosity there once was. And that's a bit strange as Hubert and ScheyerFace both come from a time when it was pure hatred. But the players these days have no love of the universities. There's no real loyalty there. All these guys chose a school based on earning potential. I doubt Cooper Flagg even knows why the arena he plays in is called Cameron Indoor. If you asked Flagg to name a Mt. Rushmore of duke players, he'd probably put Jayson Tatum on it. Same could be said for our guys. It's a shame.
