Sonny Johnson is Alonzo Gaffney's coach and the one who had great things to say about Coach Williams when he came down to see Gaffney practice.

Well, Sonny has a nephew Demetrius "Meechie" Johnson who is a freshman, class of 2021 point guard (I belive 5'11) playing along side Alonzo Gaffney at Garfield Heights. Meechie dropped 50 points on Friday, almost passing his uncle's record of 52 that he scored as a Senior.

This kid just dropped 50 and this is what he says: "That wasn’t the thing about me,” the freshman said. “It was other plays that made us win. A dive on the floor, Zo had three blocks in a row. That helped us win that game.”

I think he won a lot of us over with those lines. You can't teach character baby!!

He also took a visit to Chapel Hill back in September, I tried to link the picture of him with Sean May, but it didn't work.

Here are some clips of him. The kid is only a freshman, but from the videos he can flat out score and really fill it up from behind the arc. May I also add that the kid plays with such great energy. Roy has been owning Ohio. Can we get another big and point guard here in Johnson and Gaffney like we did with Manley and Francis? I love getting guys who are teammates because there already is that connection established.
Go get em Roy!!

The second video has some good clips of Gaffney getting after it too.

Did Gaffney take a visit in September or Meechie?

Would be lucky to have either.

Meechie is the one who visited in September based on the Instagram pic that I saw of him and Sean May.
Gaffney hasn't taken a visit yet to Chapel Hill yet, I did hear that he was planning to do so soon. Coach Frederick visited him in September and Roy did in November. I saw something from Jeremiah Francis that said he talks to Gaffney and the kid is definitely hot on the Heels. I have to say the more I watch Gaffney the more I come away impressed by how much he continues to polish his game and mature and I definitely see some John Henson in his game.

Oh yea, I totally agree I would love to have both of them. These kids have it and trust me they haven't even tapped into their potential yet.
Based on what I've seen by looking through Sonny Johnson's twitter, he is a really great model for these kids, he preaches all the right things to his kids and wants what is best for them.
If you have time take a look at this twitter, you will see posts by him on each of his players where he has some really nice words to say about them.
His twitter is @sonnyjohnson32.

I been on the Gaffney bandwagon for months and prefer him over Moore even though I don't think they're mutually exclusive.

So I’ve heard. Not sure why we haven’t offered.

I don't think he's proven he's worth the offer yet. His combination of length and touch is unreal, but he hasn't really synthesized those traits into a reliable offensive game. Given that he'll most likely only play one year, Roy might want him to show more development before he offers.

Hopefully the stars will align and Mr. Gaffney will become a Tar Heel!

The Family will make you famous Sir!

Roy often recruits kids well before offering them. Develops a relationship and when the time is right, he offers. I think Gaffney gets an offer before all is said and done.

Henson had terrible touch. 48.4% from the line for his career. He had no shot at being an NBA wing or stretch-4.

Point being, from what I've seen, Gaffney is not a OAD player. I would assume Roy feels the same way. Frankly, depending on what the roster looks like, I don't think he's a starter his freshman year. That doesn't totally preclude him from being OAD but it lessens the chances significantly.

You don't have to be good in your first year to be OAD. You have to show tools and a reasonable path to synthesizing those tools into a valuable skill-set.

He could be a 2-year guy (unless he's a bust, then I suppose he could stay longer), but I think OAD is most likely. It's ultimately up to him, of course. Roy has a better feel for his intentions than I do.

.

What's the point in recruiting a player like that?

I see Gaffney as a 2 year player minimum with him most likely being a 3 year player.

If you're a top program, you arguably shouldn't.

We finally agree.
