Does UNC have a better shot at Giles than we think?

Here's why...

Duke has Ingram, Jeter, Obi, and Vrankovic. They have commits from Tatum and Delaurier. Word on the street is that they are all in on Gabriel. Now, this doesn't take into account that Ingram and/or Jeter could go pro, but that's quite a log jam in the front court.

Does Giles look somewhere else? What does the board think?

rumor has it he was at WF this past weekend ... most know he had to rescheduled UNC due to conflict w/oak hill .. time will tell if we can get him for OV at UNC ... I know yrs ago he said WF was his favorite school .. we will see how this plays out !

No. Stop getting your hopes up just to get let down. He isn't coming to UNC.

Giles starts over anyone at Duke. He's the #1 player in a loaded class.

This.

Still don't know why everyone thinks a reschedule was a good thing. Pretty much a 2 Horse race between Dook and WF. Meaning it's probably a 1 Horse race.

I'm waiting to see how the Matt and Harry show goes up at Oak Hill....be patient Heels fans.

I guess it doesn't hurt to be hopeful. But I don't see it either. He'll probably choose duke for his 8 month NBA tryout.

If it's not us, I'd love to see him at Wake. I think it would be cool for Wake to get a big time recruit, it would help the ACC and I've always liked Manning.

I have always loved D Manning. Love his attitude and his game and I hope he turns Wake around. Secretly, I wish he had come to the Hill!

Hopefully Mr. Giles will see through the koolaid and choose WF or, dare I dream, the Tar Heels!

If anyone's shot at him is under estimated I think it may be Wake. I do think we have a shot but it IMO is an outside one. Not saying that duke does not get him but I do think their standing has been overtly over estimated. Playing with Tatum is a strong draw for him.

I would LOVE to see him elect to wait till the spring to decide, have a chance to see how our guys that would be playing with him at UNC do, have the chance to see what the NCAA will do. Not expecting that but would like to see it.

Said it before (albeit not predicting): It would not shock me in the least if he picks the deacs.

Don't underestimate Wake and Danny Manning...The appeal of playing for a former national championship mvp and post player who liked to run the floor, much like Giles does, could be very appealing, and hard for others to overcome....Just saying!

Don't know if anyone's noticed, but Manning ain't doing so bad on the recruiting trail...He lands Giles, and we may see the return of the Big 4 in the ACC, since State is loading up with talented kids too....

ACC may be heading back to it's former power base with Wake, Duke,State and Carolina butting heads for the ACC title?....

And wouldn't that fun...

Just assume Giles is not coming to UNC. K can do whatever he wants right now. He can sign 2-3 more bigs but Giles will start and get 30-minutes a game at Duke. All other players they sign will be getting a few minutes off the bench. They know this coming in. If Giles was to switch to UNC the signing would be similar to Barnes.

I think few folks (including UNC fans) think Tar Heels have much of a shot at Giles. From his bland comments to the relative lack of attention from the coaching staff, seems like that ship has sailed.

Personally I think it comes down to UK and Duke. I find the Duke pursuit of Gabriel interesting. On the one hand, seems like they're meeting with him every other day, which would make we wonder if they're worried about Giles. On the other hand, if Duke was selling Gabriel on starting at the 4 (after missing on Giles), I suspect he'd commit in a heartbeat. But Gabriel has stated he doesn't see room for himself at Duke, ergo, both Duke and Gabriel are confident that Giles is going to commit to Duke, and Duke is focused on Gabriel because...well, I guess, why not?

Duke is starting to realize the kid likes wake quite a bit....

I think Heels have an outside shot but think Dook and Wake are much more likely to land him.

One problem with Giles choosing Wake is that he presumably wants a deep run in the NCAA tournament. Wake simply doesn't have the team for that and Manning is struggling to recruit in the top 200. So far in the 2016 class, his best (of 3) commits is #171.

Sure, we all expect Manning to improve things at Wake. And, sure, a kid like Giles could learn a lot from a pro like Manning. And that MIGHT be enough. Assuming Wake has someone who can get the ball to him, Giles won't have any trouble showing off. Except that he'll be triple-teamed his entire frosh season. And that might not be a lot of fun.

Kid isn't going to Wake. Simple as that.
This....Giles like Wake and Manning but he's not committing to them. Hell I like a lot of different beaches up and down the coast but I go to NMB 85% of the time.

That's too bad!
I agree with those that say Giles could go and surprise all of us and go Weak Florist. It would be a real feather in Danny's hat and good for him/them. As someone said above, enjoy the triple teams Harry!

Now if Harry does his homework and looks at rosters/minutes, team chemistry....and he is an 18 year old! :p
Who knows.

I agree 100%

If Giles decides to not reschedule his OV to UNC, and with the way Duke is recruiting Gabriel so hard, do most fans on here believe Giles is leaning towards Wake now? I don't but I do think Wake is firmly in a close second. Could Kentucky sneak in and be the dark horse? Weird even calling them a dark horse but, could be in this case.

I'll be surprised if he doesn't follow Tatum to Duke, but if I had to pick someplace else, UK would be it. He's a good fit for their style of play and I think Calipari does a solid job developing his bigs (and getting them drafted higher than they should, imo.)

I thought Duke had cooled on Gabriel (or the other way around) and that's why they went after DeLaurier. The last 2 pieces of their 2016 class look like Giles and Bolden. From the way everyone is talking Giles is a lock. And Bolden is a strong lean. Bolden might be thinking the Duke front line is looking a bit crowded. But at the worst he comes off the bench as frosh, so who knows? Might be worth it to be part of K's undefeated retirement championship team.

Gabriel just committed to UK. Not that he was stealing minutes from Giles anyway.

It doesn't matter now, but Duke never cooled on Gabriel. K was recruiting like he wanted a class of Tatum, Jackson, Delaurier, Gabriel, Bolden and Giles. That was pretty unrealistic, but he kept going after Gabriel hard.

I think K's trying to build-up the roster to avoid a situation where mass-defections to the NBA leave the squad with virtually no returning players of consequence. Even if you were to assume Giles commits, there's a very strong likelihood that the overwhelming majority of current Duke players / recruits will not be around for the 17-18 season, including Tatum, Giles, Thornton, Ingram, Allen, and maybe even Chase Jeter or Jackson (+ Matt Jones will graduate). Duke needs to load up in this class to make sure that they have a few non-freshman on the roster. I think the 17-18 season is largely driving the push for a big class. In the case of Gabriel, I think we really wanted him to help address our multi-year problem -- but eventually that fell through because Gabriel's stock reached a level where he wanted to go somewhere that envisioned a bigger role for him on day 1.

Giles is not going to Ky IMO, he did have his head turned at one point that is pretty much over. If I had to handicap things right now for Giles, I would suggest duke 55%, Wake 30%, UNC 15%. Wake with a solid shot, the kid does love Danny Manning and grew up a Wake fan (patterned his game after Danny Manning), I think we have a puncher's chance, duke holds the best cards IMO with Tatum.

I think it is pretty sad that the UNC beat writer of the N&O needs a message board for sources. But then again, the homosexual (not that there is anything wrong with that) contingency of Wolpfack nation probably didn't have any leads for you either, so your journalistic sleuth skills brought you here. Nice job Bob Woodward.

Now GTFOH.

Well he isn't going to kensucky... and I would have to believe UNC isn't looking too bad right now for Giles. REMEMBER he is also relatively close to Pinson... I say the longer the wait the better for UNC.

Then there's Bam and Woods who are left....

Giles is going through the process and obviously UK is part of that. He doesn't have any intention of going there. It's a 3 horse race between wake, Dook and unc

I say Giles is a Tar Heel.

No inside info, no logical conclusion. Simply a lot of hopeful thinking and faith in how special this program, family, and Coach are. If that realization gets into his heart nothing else will matter.

How much of what you did at 18 was logical?

Exactly. Does he go with his heart(Wake or UNC) or does he go with his head(the new OADU)? Would love to have him but won't lose any sleep either way. Just got my new Unaffordable Care Act quote for next year and my premium is going up almost 200% again. I'm a lot more worried about how I'm going to pay that than which college an 18 year old is going to choose. Don't mean to hijack the thread but that puts recruiting in it's proper perspective.

Again...we're on a board talking college hoops. No one is saying that it is life or death but what do people come here to do? Talk college hoops.

Thus, we will talk about the issues and no one is saying that they are losing sleep or anything. Now, back to topic...

At 18, this kid has had more attention, press, advice, responsibility than most of us have had in our entire lives. So comparing a normal high school senior to this kid who will be worth millions 19 months from now is just silly. He will make a logical choice and the one that is best for his future. And he's made it pretty clear that is not at UNC. Anyone thinking otherwise is just ignoring every piece of writing on the wall.

It's really that simple.

once upon a time - OAD was the hardship rule..Spencer Haywood I believe, so if family economics are trending backwards and a kid is 18 and considered the Next One..he will punch that ticket.. but first which school and coach will help-most,best, whatever-- him in one year's time

UNC is out of the Giles race. Thus, it's down to Duke and Wake Forest with Duke being the clear favorite. If Wake could pull off a miracle and get a commit from Giles, the effect on K would be worst than Barnes, which was devastating. The man is already suffering from TWS and a national headline "K loses recruiting battle with Wake Forest for Giles" would embarrass the heck out of him. That ego will take a big hit.
