EC needs to start immediately. We finally have a pg folks! That boy sees the court so well. Why we started the season with him off the bench is crazy.

Hubert put himself in a pickle. You have to let the best players start. He’s only making it harder to take it away from RJ

Tar Heel Trivia (no Googling allowed): Who was the last Tar Heel point guard to start “immediately” as a Freshman?

I think Cadeau starts in Atlantis. Wojcik is a leader and Winner and will accept any role he is asked to play. I think he is the 5th guard, and he has to see that too.
Cadeau needs to play better than last night, but I think he will once he finds a comfortable leadership role in the Starting lineup. His FT shooting will improve too.

You could make the case that for a smaller lineup Seth should be starting, and if we wanted to go two bigs Jalen should be starting and stretching the 4. Both have a better +/- than EC thus far.

However, the only thing that’s going to see Elliot reach his potential is minutes, and lots of them. He needs to be seeing 25-27 minutes a game whether he’s starting or not.

One thing is for certain, whoever the 5th starter is, it should not be Paxon.

Paxson looks like a bench player to me during the regular season. He has contagious energy and plays with some edge. But it’s cute that he’s starting.

I guess Cadeau needs to dive on the floor a few more times in practice to earn it, lol.

Bobby?

Dummy me, it was Caleb (he was starting as our point with RJ more the 2).

Cole Anthony ?
We have a winner! He started in the Tar Heels first game that year as a Freshman against Notre Dame and played 37 mins at PG. Can’t remember another UNC Freshman PG who started immediately like that other than Phil Ford. Ford was the first Freshman during Dean Smith’s tenure to start in the first game of his career. Cole had his moments but also had his struggles.

I guess my point is…let’s be a little patient with Cadeau. I’m sure once ACC play starts…he’ll be a starter and major contributor.

It was Caleb 🤦🏻‍♂️ and I’m an idiot

I should have known when DaveChapelle & DSouthr said Caleb. Those guys are always spot on. I completely forgot Caleb was a starter in his first game as a freshman.

Okay, one other bit of Tar Heel trivia (and I know I got this one right). Dean Smith said he only saw 2 UNC basketball players in his career that he knew were going to be NBA players during their first years at Carolina. Nope, Jordan isn’t one of the 2

Where can you see season long plus/minus stats?

Not just Caleb. RJ, Cole, and Coby White all started the first game of their freshman season. It's become almost an annual occurrence, so not sure why you're harkening back to Phil Ford.

I would say Charlie Scott and Billy Cunningham?

We've played no one but you'd rather he be pressed into actiona NOW- a kid who just as well could be playing in high school?

He's being eased in. He clearly is feeling the adjustment to this level/ this stage.

Give it time.
Cadeau is being challenged now, he is having to stretch himself now, what came easy in high school is no longer easy against D-1 athletes. I suspect in practice, maybe I should say I would if in Hubert's position, I would match Seth up on him. Let him have to deal with one of it not the best back court defender in the college game. Forge him in that fire now so he is hardened for late season.

I'd like to see Seth and EC on the floor more together. Seth has gone full blown stupid athletic and he and EC compliment one another well. I think Seth EC Washington Bacot and Ingram would be a great group to put on the floor together .. RJ is another one of those legacy players whose time has past. He's not really a very good PG and he's surely undersized as a 2G. Also somewhat of a liability on defense. HD's continues to not play his best 5 and still very questionable on some of his game coaching. imo

How do Trimble and Cadeau complement each other though? They both can't shoot (or Cadeau can't yet at least). I'd want to surround Cadeau with shooters he can kick to, not another penetrating lead guard.

I think both of them pair better with RJ than each other, due to RJ's shooting abilities. As you noted RJ is also a weaker defender and seems like both of those guys might help compensate for that with their perimeter D (Seth especially).

Caleb Love
Cole Anthony
Coby White
Marcus Paige
Bobby Frasor
Quentin Thomas (Santa Clara game)
Raymond Felton

I believe all those players started at PG the first game of their freshmen years. Though most of those guys were pressed into starting bc the previous seasons' stating point guards were unavailable.

Cadeau is probably the guy best suited to throw lobs for Trimble.

I'm still waiting on a Cadeau, Davis, Trimble lineup. I would have personally tried it against one of the small midmajors we've played.

Fair point. My thinking was if we are going to put our best athletes on the floor and score in transition then you need your best defensive team and that would include Trimble. EC's shot will come from the outside when he settles in and shakes off the pressure from where he is. Love RJ and what he's done for the program but if you want to be a transition team that does the Roy Williams UNC "can't go fast enough" then RJ is not that type player... he plays to much laterally. @gary-7 posted the transition stats with RJ and EC and it's fairly stark and it's early in the season and RJ has more PT. Like many have said, we are not starting our best 5, and I'd say by a long shot. Another flaw with HD is he will not give his younger, and possibly better, players PT early against lesser teams. Makes no sense to me. Seems we're almost doing another repeat of seasons past. Hope that's not the case.

I remember Dean & Roy didn’t always play their more talented freshman right away..in case you didn’t realize it EC played the 4th most minutes on the team Friday..

Not sure throwing lobs for a 6'3 guard should be a major factor in a college basketball game.

They were EASILY our best defensive backcourt, and it wasn't close.

And Cadeau's current shooting confidence issues are a direct result of not starting from game-1.

Couldn’t agree more.

There’s something about starting especially when your a pg to set the pace and rhythm.
If you know you know!

LOL, Cadeau and Seth at least IMO is our best defensive mix of point and 2 guard, I think by a LOT but from a purely defensive aspect Seth and Ryan is pretty stout. But Cadeau and RJ is our best offensive duo. It is a matter of which of these duos can improve their weak spots and jury is still out but it does look to me like Seth has taken it up a notch offensively and I do believe Cadeau will. I can't say that I see RJ having taken his defensive game up from last season and he just isn't going to get any taller. RJ works hard on both ends, not trying to throw shade at him but he is short and not the quickest 5'10" guy in the college game.

Last game, Seth scored 11pts in 15mins, RJ scored 8 in 28mins, you do the math? LOL As I have said many times, I prefer Seth to back up Cadeau at the point and RJ stay strictly at the 2. I want RJ off the ball hunting his spots for good clean looks more than running our offense.

I'm comfortable with him working his way up to it.

Pretty sure Hubert won't wait as long with EC as Roy did with Kendall.

By the same token, Hubert doesn't need to slam EC into the starting role immediately the way Roy did with Marcus.

I wonder if Marcus advised Hubert to bring EC off the bench at first.

It will vary from player to player but it makes sense to me to let freshmen watch the first few minutes of early games before being put in. Get a feel for what they will face when it's their turn. At some point they won't need that.

With RJ, CR and ST on the squad, there's no reason to force EC.

I'm just not seeing that bro. RJ against UCR was 3-11 FG and 1-7 from three and only had 1 FT. That is incredibly unimpressive for a UNC senior PG or 2 guard and this is against UCR !!!! When RJ gets to playing some of the better comp coming up quick he will be exposed as a serious liability. He is not a PG either. Marginal handle .. plays laterally and when he does that he's looking for his own shot. If UNC intends to thrive in transition then it aint gonna happen with RJ on the floor. If UNC wants to put their best 5 on the floor then it aint RJ or Cormac in the line up and hubcap needs to get get his head out his hind end and realize the obvious... once again we are seeing last year take duex. imo

I don’t know why it’s a “force” to start Cadeau if he’s your best PG. To me, it’s more of a force to start Wojcik if he isn’t one of your 5 best players.

And I’m not saying Cadeau absolutely needs to start from day one. I think it’s much more logical to start him. But I’m personally most interested in Withers or Washington starting instead of Wojcik.

I don’t know why it’s Wojcik starting. It reminds me a bit when Desmond Hubert or Joel James started. Starting those 2 was unnecessary. They werent cut out for it.

He's going to be our best PG. We can already see that. But is he right now? Maybe, but we don't need to put him through what Marcus went through.

Marcus survived. EC probably would, too, but why "force" him to?

Three or 4 of us here thought Withers should start. At the moment it looks like bringing Withers off the bench was the right decision - although how much of that is because the concussion meant he got off to a slow start?

I won't be surprised if Withers starts some or a lot later on, but he's just 1 of several guys who are likely to be good enough to start. Wojcik is one of them, too, and his maturity and IQ are, for the moment, edging out guys who probably have more upside.

I'm OK with that.

We have a number of players who need to demand PT by the way they play the minutes they get. Trimble, for example, made an argument for more PT in the last game. Washington, too.

Agree and it isn't as if Cadeau is not playing, he got 22mins last game while RJ played a team high of 28mins. Way to much is put on who begins the game but it is the minutes that you play that really matter. To even suggest that Cadeau has struggled to shoot to a degree because he is not starting indicates that you think Cadeau mentally fragile? Marcus did not start off shooting great either, in fact most fans were questioning why he was starting ahead of PJ.

I have watched time and again freshmen come to us and hit that freshman wall, i prefer them to hit it early rather than late.

I guess I don’t see anybody else on this roster who’s a better pg than EC.
I just feel he needs to be out there as much as possible and maybe we’ll see that against better competition.
