First loss to state in chapel hill under Roy

I hate to admit it, but it does look like the trajectory is really pointing down. Williams' teams are rarely 2-5 over a stretch in this part of the season. The injuries have hurt, but I can't imagine those equate into the inconsistency and lack of ability to finish the games.

Oh well. If all our Juniors come back, maybe next year will be better.
Roy needs to get the chip off his shoulder and actually coach and recruit, if he still has the energy to do so.
Who works harder than Roy? The class he brought in this year, regardless of how they've performed so far, was a great haul particularly considering the scandal noise. These three are exactly what we need more of in terms of attitude, skill, and aggression.

Seriously. That's ONE home loss to state in TWELVE years. It was a dumpster fire and it sucked to watch, but the overreacting is crazy. Roy is only 5 years out from a national championship, and there's no reason to think we can't get there again. It takes everything going right plus a bit of luck to have that kind of season. I think it's far more likely to happen with Roy and his excellent staff in place than it is without him.

... and only 3 seasons ago we would've been playing for the Natty if not for total thuggery from the team-who-must-not-be-named.

This board is so ammusing after a loss, isn't it?
That team had 6 players that were first round picks. Theres not 6 players on this current team that could play in Europe

tell me what's so crazy about the chance of us losing out?..gt just blew a game at home to Louisville..alot of single digit losses on their resume..Miami beat dook at dook..of course they will be fired up for us..dook,well need I say anymore!!..we all know Roy doesn't take the acc tournament serious...given the seed we're headed for in the NCAA, we are going to draw a strong opponent!!..so,why is this so crazy?

Sure, we could lose out. We could also win out. Miami has some terrible losses at home. We just demolished GT and handed them their worst lose of the season. We did everything but beat Duke in Durham. So one could make the argument either way. The chances of winning out or losing out are neither all that probable.

However, if Vegas were to make odds on that, UNC losing out would have better odds that them winning out. I'm certain of it.

But that's not the point. The point is that we're even having this discussion. There's too much talent on this team for there to even be the chance of us losing out however remote it may be. If we had not lost to ND at home, embarrassingly given up an 18 point lead to Louisville, beaten a marginal Pitt team and then finished business at duke, no one here would be saying these things that some of y'all find insulting and ridiculous. We would have chalked last night's loss up to "just a bad game". But when bad games continue to happen and there's no improvement from December to March, what are we supposed to think?

College basketball is a roller coaster. Crazy things happen. Good teams play poorly. Bad teams knock off ranked opponents. Whatcha gonna do?

It's a rare season that you just get to steamroll everybody, as it should be.

to summarize. our teams looks tired and defeated. 2 things that don't bode well for a strong finish. Will we show some glimpse down the stretch that we can put it together? I'm sure we will. However, my gut tells me that we will continue to see the same Tar Heel team we've seen recently for the rest of the year that will ultimately end in an expected early round exit in the NCAA tournament.

the effort and intensity of this team just isn't there. from one game to the next, you can visibly see the lack of effort in different guys on our roster. That's a recipe for disaster. You will always have a few that simply don't get after it as much as you'd like them to but if you can count on a few to consistently get it done, you'll be fine. It's alarming that in any given game, that list changes.

Lets save all of you some trouble and cancel your TV service and stop watching it if they are that bad.

The overreacting is priceless.

It didn't used to be all that rare for us.
You're right, and really it still isn't. We had a team with that kind of potential three years ago, and three years before that, and four years before that. So I guess we're due for one again, but it's not like it's the decade-long skid you'd think we're in from reading the board.

We had a lot of posters predicting Final 4 this year....just saying. When you don't have perimeter shooters and don't have guys who can drive , it can just be tough to score against mediocre teams.

Agree. And I just posted last week that that's Roy's MO - building teams into championship level contenders every 3-4 years. The problem though is that this year's team is no better than last years - frankly, I'd say we're worse. So the trajectory towards a championship level team is not there. Also, when we won in 05, we knew the 05-06 team would be a start of the rebuild. That year yielded a 23-8 (12-4) record which seems miles ahead of where we are now. And to make things worse, that team was led by freshman whereas this one is led by juniors.

Then look at when we won in 09. The 09-10 team was a disaster. So we can all say at least we're not there. But that was a different issue all together. LDII was killing us. And when Roy finally made the right move, we started playing much better ball. So fast forward to the 10-11 team and you see another very good rebuilding year - 29-8 but 14-2 in the ACC! That is lightyears away from where we are now.

The point I'm making is that the core of those teams improved from one season to the next. The core of this team has not. And I'm losing hope that we could make the big jump next year even if every single player comes back - maybe especially if every single player comes back.

cold hard facts are that we don't have the horses to run with the big boys at this time, and a stubborn coach who is unwilling or unable to turn the tide and make the necessary adjustments to get us playing with max effort and to the best of our ability.

Not sure about the rest of you but I just don't know what those adjustments would be? We aren't a good half court team or a good break team either.
