George Lynch drops a savage MJ story I’ve never heard before.

So Kenny Harris has something in common with Tyler Nickel:
Virginia high school all time scoring leaders who came to UNC and never panned out.
Yup, it's all Hubert's fault.

Honest question my man: you seem to have very little tolerance for anti-Hubert talk… are you pro-Hubert all the way and think he’s absolutely the right guy long term, or are you as long as he’s the coach we should 100% support him no matter what guy?

Not trying to be a d*ck… asking respectfully.

I appreciate the question.
I would choose the latter: he is our coach and deserves our support. That said, I find myself yelling at the screen the same way I did during times with Dean Smith and Roy Williams. But that was a different time. We were guaranteed a full cupboard every year so the frustration was more about underachieving with top talent.
If there was another good option available over HD, I am all for exploring it because at the end of the day it’s about winning. The younger me used to care about “graduation rates and clean program.” The older mature me just wants us to be competitive again.

Great answer. I’m quite frustrated with HD’s overall performance, so I tend to blame him for just about everything at this point, which probably isn’t fair. More should be directed at players too. Coaches often get more credit or more blame than they deserve with respect to player development, and I’m probably guilty of that. Granted, HD probably deserves some, but not all of it.

Wholeheartedly agree… just get back to sustained success.

Michael Jordan: It is ALL about TEAM and winning, and everybody must work and then work more and then work enough that other people see it and fear you.

If Michael had been a UNC assistant coach when Wallace, Stackhouse, and McInnes arrived as frosh, that troop of self-promoting EGO hounds would not have been allowed to ruin team chemistry. And the 94 team might have gone undefeated.

There was no other option. Dean always, after he realized that Larry Brown was too close to dirty to be the first Jewish UNC BB HC, wanted to name the first black UNC head BB coach who would be a former player, and that then became Roy's dream. Roy plucked Davis to be that guy so gifted.

If the buck does not stop at HCM then its stop nowhere. If the payers are not doing what the coach wants, then the coach must discipline and replace them. If the assistants are ntio up to snuff then the HC must replace them. If the HC fails to do either well, then the NC is responsible for the failures.

No new info in this post:
Hubert played for Dean Smith for 4 years...and was probably around the program even before then just through Walter Davis connections. Surely 12 years as an assistant coach in our program showed Hubert's true mettle.
Since we are talking about Jordan (Remember, we used to sell His Airness and UNC to recruits as a pipeline to the NBA, right?) - can you name how UNC GUARDS played in the NBA in the 12 years between Jordan '84 and Jeff McInnis '96? TWO. Kenny Smith and Hubert Davis.
This man means something to this program and this program is in his blood.
The results may not be what we want but the entire game and environment have changed. I have zero proof that Dean Smith or Roy Williams would have been nearly as successful as they were if NIL and immediate transfer options were available back in the day.

And I have always liked and respected Larry Brown. The man coached at all different levels of play and scrapped and clawed his way to success - in college and the pros. I wish we had a younger version of him today as I feel he has the make-up to do business as it is being done today.

Pittsburghheel and Point2Passer:

Your respectful discussion contains a plethora of salient points to describe the differences between eras:

1) The Dean of College Basketball and Roy set the standard for Carolina Basketball for 52 years.

2) Hubert is coaching in a time of many modern i$$ues. I hope 25/26 is very successful for the players and the staff.

it's safe to assume that Dean wanted to name a black head coach, but your presumption re: his opinion of Larry Brown is speculative.

Dean always adored Brown, as in saw him as the Golden Boy he wanted to help show the world he was the best. Dean was indispensable in getting Brown both the UCLA and KU jobs. It was only after that KU job that most UNC basketball boosters made it clear that they could not support Brown ever returning to UNC. Part of it was that ole Ed and Danny Manning thing, but most of it was that Brown left both UCLA and KU on probation.
