Hey, Roy ... A few thoughts ...

"Armchair coaches pretending they have it all figured out"....Umm the shit that Roy fks up is all common sense stuff. 20-2 run, you take a timeout and talk to your guys. Team is 20/25 from 3, you stop helping and stay on your man. Player has made last 4 shots he's taken, you don't take him out of the game. Common sense shit, bud.

You can hate all you want and talk shit like I have it all figured out but this is stuff that people have complained about for years and years - not just me.
I'm not sure it's an "arm chair" thing when it comes to Duke. Roy has one style defensively. He coaches man-to-man with a hard over denial of passing lanes. He also pressures out to 30 feet.

This is just a flawed strategy against Duke who recruits future NBA players. Coach K also runs a lot of NBA sets and his players in isolation are usually better than our players on defense. So when Grayson Allen, Frank Jackson or Jayson Tatum get by the initial defender (and they usually do because they're better 1-on-1 than their opponent), it collapses our defense or a helpside defender gets caught turning his head.

People think you can't zone Duke because they can shoot. I don't think that's the case. You zone Duke because they maybe the hardest team in the country to defend 1-on-1.

There was a reason Coach K probably played some zone against UNC. And that's because they couldn't guard us 1-on-1, especially inside.

So unless the UNC way changes its defensive strategy where zone is implemented, as long as Coach K recruits future OAD lottery guys, Duke is going to have the offensive advantage over UNC. That's just plain and simple. UNC just needs to hope that over the course of the game, Duke misses enough 3's and UNC grabs enough offensive rebounds to offset the problem.

It's a strategic mis-match of Roy's defense vs K's offense and that's a reason why Roy doesn't usually beat Coach K.

WoW, write this date down jung because we finally actually agree on this! LOL

Yeah, our defense works well on most teams out there but where it falters is with teams that have guards that can hit the long jumpers. Duke is a great example, Ky did the same thing, guards hitting treys. Our guards are taught to stay in front and that kinda puts them on their back foot looking to stay in front of the driver and they are taught to help when the primary defender loses his man on the drive, creates those pull up ops and those kick back to spot up shooter ops.

Notice, duke has struggled against zones mostly because those drives have no where to go and guards can get over in to passing lanes. Duke does not have great big to big passing so when they do play a zone they have to mostly rely on outside shooting and from a zone look the defending guards can have more hands up to challenge the jumper than they can if they have to worry exclusively about the drive.

One thing with this UNC team is I don't think they are as aware in ball you man as many of our other teams have been. WE don't seem to do a great job of identifying the passing zones and looking for the pass out thru it. If you see Kennard or tripster setting up outside and someone driving with the ball you better figure out that passing lane back out to kennard or tripster and get you hand on the ball or a trey will be served up most of the time.

yep, over and over and over ... been saying this for YEARS. Roy's style does not work vs K's style. And Dean's style would not have worked vs the current day K either. It's just the way it. Roy will win 80%+ of all games that are not against dook ... but he has and will continue to lose most games vs K.

It's also an example on how Coach K has evolved better than Roy IMO.

The game of basketball has changed. It's not in the process of changing. It isn't going to change. It has changed.

It's a 3-point shooting game, and it's a game that's becoming more centered around math, especially offensively.

A 33% 3 point shooter (not a good 3 point shooter) is the equal to a 49.5% 2 point shooter and that percentage probably ranks in the top 50 in the country as a team. Duke doesn't have 33% 3 point shooters. Think about if you have a 40% 3 point shooter. That's the equivalent of a 60% 2 point shooter.

We need more 35% + 3 point shooters. I'm pretty sure Roy will always have a rotation of big guys that will be among the best in the country. But until he recruits guards that at minimum can shoot the 3 compared to jumping out of the gym, our guards will be at a disadvantage.

Also, the whole, make them shoot from further away strategy that Roy implements is out dated. Your defense needs to be designed to force mid range and long 2's. And I don't think ours is.
