Basketball shooting, not gun.

Anyway, I have heard multiple times this week that shooting in the Houston arena can be difficult.

That concerns me and I hope we adjust faster than the other teams.

What I've heard is that from 3 point range, teams are extremely bad shooting in this football stadium.
I'm hoping since we don't rely on the three as much, that it will be an advantage for us.

Yeah..but we're gonna have to shoot more threes going against that zone!!

Don't have to. Just pound it inside and shoot enough 3s to keep them honest. I think somewhere in the 4/15 range would be sufficient to win the game.

Posted this on the other thread...

Saw a stat that is interesting on these large stadiums. Look at the team numbers in large venues, the best 3 pt shooting teams come way down statistically in big arenas and mid level or poorer shooting 3 pt teams don't come down as much but do come down a bit. As an example Vilanofun has shot well from distance this season, say 35% and our number for the season was say 30%, in this example Vilanofun would shoot 29-30% in Houston and we would only come down to say 28-29%. Point being, don't force what is not there. Our strength has been to feed the bigs. We busted the heck out of their zone before, they will game plan it, so will we, I'll take our kids.

You would think that Cuse playing in the Carrier Dome might at least help them get acclimated to the cavernous Houston arena faster than the other 3 teams. The fact that we get so many points in the paint will work in our favor, as long as we can penetrate the zone. We need to exploit Brice and team at the FT line and JJ and Hicks on the baseline. We can't shoot much worse from 3 that we did in our two previous games against Cuse. The way Marcus has been shooting the ball in the tourney, as well as Berry and JJ, I think we can definitely keep Cuse honest from outside.

Specifically for the game against Cuse, here are some stats from the two wins this season.
Feb 29th Game:
We went 6-25 from 3PT (24%) in that game and still won.

Jan 9th Game:
We went 3-16 from 3PT (18.8%) in that game and still won.

Syracuse Assist to Turnovers this season are 493 (A) to 430 (TO)
UNC Assist to Turnovers this season are 678 (A) to 408 (TO)
Syracuse Rebounds this season (862 Def / 429 Off) (Total 1291)
UNC Rebouncs this season ( 1009 Def / 536 (Off) (Total 1545)

Rebound the ball like we should be able to and turn them over and we will have a great chance to move on to the finals.

^ Oklahoma has been more efficient, though.

33.4 of Villanova's points are 3s and ranks 70th in the nation. Oklahoma ranks 14th with 38.9 of its points from behind the arc.

If Nova does attempt more, maybe it's a wash.

Houston is not only a dome but I believe it is as well an elivated floor, really screws with guys depth perception. That has always been a nasty place for shooters, it should benefit us because our primary attack is driving to the hoop and pounding the ball inside.

The freshman that shot the ball real well for Syracuse in their last couple games, Richardson, I kinda expect the arena to mess with his shot, he is a freshman, has not seen this kind of thing. Syracuse MUST jump shoot really well against us because they can not pound it inside on us and their guards are not exactly quicksters with the ball handles to blow by and get to the rim.

check out the Golden State Warriors / 3 point contest article undertaken by Buddy, Paige, and Berry across the country. This shooting was all done in their home gyms. Crazy accuracy shooting. sounds like Berry shot practically til his arms fell off.

I hope that isn't a negative, and that they get enough shooting practice in, at NRG.

The article made me think of a Final Four year when Shammond hit like 200 FTs in a row at a fan Expo before a Final Four game, then he couldn't throw it in the ocean from a boat come game time.

I know we're not dependent on three's, but the time and space Syracuse allowed Perrantes in the first half of the Virginia game was pretty stark. I think he had at least three from right in front of the basket without any notable attention because they were so compact inside the arc.
Bs. Perrantes was like 6 feet behind the arc. Watch it again. He missed those same shots in the 2nd which they still gave him cuz unless ur curry they are low % shots.

I also worry about it for out midrage jump shots. Particularly, Brice Johnson, etc. shooting from 10 feet when catching ball in zone. That is best way to beat zone.

You're right, just watched the first quarter back. Perrantes hit some very good ones in there - deeper than I thought.

My bad. The ending of that game messed up my recollection of events.
