How far in NIT do they go?

if hubert were committed to developing our roster and letting pretty much anybody not named Caleb Love play then i may have a different answer but any game we play with him on the floor is a shit show. rinse and repeat. Hubert honestly should be ashamed and should be fired. Legacy UNC players have been super PC about it but it’s embarassing and they’ve said as much. hell listen to montross on the radio. he makes it pretty clear how he feels about caleb’s shot selection at this point.

I look forward to the NIT.

The idea that we should opt out is childish, imo.

When Maryland did that back in the day, maybe they had some justification. They were, after all, the 2nd best team in the nation.

What's our excuse?
Yeah, I'm with you. I just don't have much confidence in the team. I don't think they'll do very well. They're just not that good of a team.

If we do go to the NIT, should Hubert should give more (most?) of the minutes to the guys who are definitely coming back? Not to punish the guys who are leaving, but to get a good feel for what we will have before he has to dive into the portal.

If so, that means some of our guys need to make decisions.

I'm not saying Leaky and Pete and whoever else is unlikely to return shouldn't play at all. They're still part of the team and should get a chance to extend their season. But other guys should get more minutes. Let's see what they can do.

Everybody says that at this time of year, freshmen are no longer freshman. So let's see what Seth, Jalen and Tyler promise for next season.

I wonder if after tonight’s game, hub and the team stick around for the ncsu and Clemson game. Maybe ol roy will hang around if not past his bedtime.

UNC should hate these two teams. And should be furious / embarrassed that both are likely in the NCAA tourney - and that the Heels are not. Meaning the Heels are clearly below both of these historically inferior programs that UNC has OWNED over many decades.

What could be a more damning, embarrassing stark reality picture of where this program is? To be Clemson’s and Nc state’s little sister? How does that go over with Roy, boosters, and rightly proud past UNC players?

One thing is for certain, they NEED to play more! They definitely need as much playing time as possible. They won't get better by not playing.

I think UCLA would have beaten Maryland at least 2 of 3 times, probably 3 of 4. UCLA also drubbed Moo in regular season. I think UCLA would have beaten Moo 2 of 3 times.

How far can this go in the NIT? As far as their attitudes allow them. If they suddenly have command over their bad attitudes, they work hard to get things right.

That, of course, is assuming that Davis and staff are already telling them the right things.

I respectfully disagree. Pulling the plug on this season and declining a NIT invitation might just communicate to this team, at least the people who are coming back to it, that subpar effort and results are not part of the Carolina way. Certainly nothing else the coaching staff has tried has delivered the message in a way the team understands it. We have a standard set by McGuire, Smith, Guthridge and Roy (Yes I left Doherty out on purpose) and this team has fallen woefully short of that standard. I have no faith that Hubert would play anyone other than his standard starters and that next year's returning players would garner little to nothing from the NIT experience. Might be better for them to go home and watch the big dance on TV to reset their attention and the program's expectations.

Just spitballin' here...

The problem is Hubert won’t do that.

They’re not getting better by playing either. Send a message to the whole team and shut this season down.

I agree.

I think there is close a 0% chance UNC actually turns down the invite. That's arrogant. Yes, we feel our program is better than that, but history isn't this year. We are an NIT team. If Hubert starts the regular starting 5 then he hasn't learned a thing. I do expect some roster turnover and I don't blame them.

It's ridiculous and pathetically entitled for fans to be saying we should turn down an NIT bid as if we're somehow above it when we've shown all year that that's where we belong.

The players returning - and that's likely as not to be most of the team other than Leaky, Nance, and possible transfers - need all the practice and postseason experience they can get. Not to mention maybe the experience would give them motivation to not want to end up there again next year.

Let's go win the damn thing, and if not, it's still better for our team, our still-new coach, and the development of our program to participate and learn.

I am praying we can somehow keep Bacot and Davis . Love leaves , and bring in at least 3 transfers that can put the ball in the hoop. For a team that has prided themselves in having a very good offense over the years. This was terrible to watch. Also can we start pushing the damn ball again. Hate this slow down half court crap. Missed the days we got 10-20 fast break points a game.

And I would add- lets change up the defense every now and then. Teams looked way too comfortable against us for vast majority of the year...

I'd be ok with actually playing these guys we recruited instead of bringing in multiple transfers. Assuming our own players don't transfer.

That's a 15-20 loss season right there. Next year is going to be rough.
Why do you think that? We have no clue how good they are because they haven't gotten a chance to play. And if they are really that bad, three transfers aren't going to make much difference. If we aren't going to play good recruits, then we should stop going after them. Save us the embarrassment of them transferring.

I think that Hubert Davis wants to win and if those guys were good they would play some. I don't think Hubert is good at developing players so how a guy comes in is how that guy is going to leave. Would love to be wrong but Hubert has shown very little ability to adjust.

I think every coach wants to win. Not giving your recruits playing time is a bad way to try to win.

I think that's too harsh, but you make a fair point.

I guess my question would be whether the guys who need to hear that message would actually get it. Play in the NIT for the guys who really tried their hardest (and, yes, give those guys more minutes).

Plus I'm a selfish fan who wants to see more games, and still hopes to see us get our act together.

Sometimes I feel like Charlie Brown and this team is Lucy. But I keep trying to kick the football.

Maybe so. I was just trying to suggest that we don't have a good reason to opt out of the NIT - assuming we get an offer. But that's just my opinion.

TBH, I was disappointed when UMd bailed on the NIT that year. I saw that as an unsportsmanlike level of arrogance. But at least they had some justification for their arrogance because they were really terrific.

The podcast crew on TOS are saying we should definitely go to the NIT, if invited. The assumption seems to be that we will be invited.

They told the story of the 2010 team when the team and some assistant coaches didn't want to go to the NIT and Roy overruled them.

One of the podcast guys said "if I'm the coach and one of my guys says he doesn't want to play in the NIT, I'd tell him to 'find another school, right now.'"

I'm inclined to agree. Ditto for any assistant who doesn't want to play in the NIT.

We'll be under .500 if that's the case. There's not a single guy on the bench whose play this year remotely merits a starting role. Maybe Washington will grow into it, but the others would require huge leaps. These guys couldn't even outcompete our struggling starters for minutes. You can't play like Trimble or Dunn this year and expect significant minutes at UNC.

Thankfully there's no way that's going to happen. There will be 2-3 transfer starters next year or I'll eat my hat. Hubert ain't going out without even trying to compete.

I think our back court starters - RJ and Wilcher - will be very good.

Meanwhile Seth and D'Marco should be plenty good enough that we don't need RJ to be an Iron Man any more. And who knows, maybe RJ can play some off the ball. I'd be curious to see how his shooting responds to a reduction in ball-handling duties.

Which is to say, I'm not too worried about our back court.

The front court, on the other hand.... Yikes! Every year we say some of these guys will be ready next year . . . and they aren't. We probably shouldn't bet the farm that next year will be different.

Two starter quality front court guys from the portal please. Maybe 3.
