How Is Tony? [Update - Not Avail for FSU]

Really don't need Tony tonight due to Syracuse's zone. Berry may pop for 35 pts tonight.

Well, we traditionally struggle against zones and Syracuse tends to play them better than most teams because it's their go to defense. And they are holding their opponents to less than 40% from the field. So I'm a bit worried. I think we need to go inside early and often and exploit our advantage there. We're going to get some open looks from behind the arc but we can't fall in love with treys. That's gotten us in trouble a couple of times this year.

As for offense, they are a guard oriented team, with a young front court. Almost 40% of their shots are treys and the make 39% of them. So our perimeter defense needs to be solid.

Spread the zone and attack it, entry passes better be sharp and quick, turn and shoot quick.
Not like that zone attack v. GaTeck, Fumbling passes all day.

I'm thinking Tony may be back for BC.

Thanks for the update. I was wondering if he might be a go for BC. He's crucial to our depth down the stretch.

Glad to have Tony back for BC, I hope this team remembers BC at BC from last season, as bad as BC was, they made it close at their place. Point being this is not a gimme, we need to own this one from the tip!

The first 5-10 minutes is the key. The Heels just can't let them go on one of those 15-3 runs at the beginning of the game. At minimum, keep the game close thoughout the first half and pull away for about a 7-10 point win.

While we have played really well in conference play so far, road wins in this ACC are double tuff to come by, even for teams that are strong favorites. Even as well as we have played there is still a point that Roy can and needs to hammer these guys on. We need to star BOTH halves strong. WE had a 16pt lead in the second half vs GT, gave it up and lost, had solid leads that we gave back in second halves I think in all of our conference games, we were up- by 15 on cuse and all the sudden it was 3.

Point is, we now need to instill that shark smelling blood in the water cold blooded back breaking killer instinct. You go in to the half with a 10pt lead, take it to 20 early second half and keep increasing it, when you have them staggered finish it with that knock out blow, don't let them back in it. That is that next level this team has to get to, that is the next level this team can get to. You get there by not depending so much on those trey point bombs early in the shot clock, get your big men rolling and then break their backs with the treys.

You do that by defensive intensity, by limiting your unforced turn overs, by blocking out for rebounds, by hitting your free throws, not forgetting to get your big men going for easier baskets, making the extra pass, and by not having your key players pick up silly fouls. Great jump shooting comes & goes, at times it does not even carry over from 1 half to the other but defense can be there every game, look at UVa for an example. But those fundamental things I laid out can carry over for every game and need to for us to get to and stay at that next level and see us not give back solid leads in second halves or dig early holes we have to come back from.

Dean always wanted to, if at all possible, to win 4 minute segments, first 4 min of the first half the 4 minutes to close the half and the second half, same first and last 4...I think the guys "get it" on our starts, got to go hard and smart.

And nothing drives me crazier.

I agree 100%.

Exactly. We fall in love with the 3-pointer too often. Our bread and butter is points in the paint and we sometimes forget that. Roy should not allow that to happen, if it means calling a TO and reiterating thaty message. And I was always taught that offense comes and goes, as we all know we go through stages where we struggle to make layups, but defense can and should be constant.
