How Long Before Alt-Left Demand UNC Change "TarHeel" Nickname?

The name Tar Heel isn't going anywhere.
Seemingly, but I didn't think a guy with the name Robert Lee would get booted out of a broadcasting opportunity either.

I dunno, if the right connections are made, and loud enough people are made aware - it could. I may have to alert the local rabble-rousers as to how offensive the name is, and watch them run with it.

Well, I think it's been made pretty clear about the why's and if's of that whole reaction. It's overreaction to me, but that's me.

Tar Heels can actually have multiple meanings. It's somewhat ambiguous.

In fact, I think I have a ringer to save the day.

I have a book called "The Rites of Autumn: The Story of College Football". It was published in 2001, a little dated.

Anyway, it's a great book. And, there's a section in there where they break down the usage of all the mascots and nicknames- most used, most common, etc.. And, there's a unique group of "Some whose meanings are often lost on most of us." 10 unique school mascots. And, guess who is one of the 10? UNC! It's described as: "North Carolina Tar Heels (Those in the pine barrens of North Carolina not careful enough to avoid stepping in the pine tar)."

Maybe we can go back to The White Phantoms. Err, never mind.

Miami's mascot -- Sebastian the Ibis -- has a pretty cool backstory.
The other 9 in the book:

Demon Deacons

WCU Catamounts (Cat of the Mountain)

VMI Keydets

Oklahoma Sooners

Furman Paladins (Knights in Charlemagne's court)

Akron Zips

Southern Illinois Salukis

Knox Siwash

Then there was "Some Not So Likely To Strike Fear In The Heart Of An Opponent":

Amherst Lord Jeffs
Boston University Terriers
Delaware Fighting Blue Hens
Ohio Wesleyan Battling Bishops
Oregon Ducks
Penn Quakers
Swarthmore Little Quakers
TCU Horned Frogs
Tufts Jumbos
VPI Gobblers (or Hokies)
Williams Ephmen
Youngstown State Penguins

And, I will always be in favor of Redskins. That will be my last bastion of my personal racism to break. I figure; As long as Red Mesa High School (a high school of all Navajo) are okay with using Redskins as a mascot, as well as dozens of other Native American tribe schools using it, I'm in good company. I'm also betting that the actual game of football expires before the Redskins name.

Amen to the Redskin part or should I say "Hail to the Redskins, Hail victory........"

Braves on the warpath... FIGHT for Old DC!

That song is sooooo racist. But, I rationalize it by the idea that mascots and sports nicknames are typically chosen to instill a sense of perseverance, strength, resolve and fierceness. The notion that the native tribes of the American Indians are all of those things, to the point that they'd be used in various ways to be attached to teams where those values are simplified, but very necessary to be successful, is the opposite of derogatory and insulting. Whenever I played Cowboys and Indians, I was an Indian. The Redskins imagery is the coolest of all the NFL teams to me. And, the present helmet logo was drawn by a Blackfeet elder who offered it on behalf of the Blackfeet nation who collectively wanted an amalgam profile that embodied their people. Of course, that was in 1970 or 71.

Why is UNC in a book about college football?

Believe me... that is one of the 2 or 3 references to the school in the entire book. But, I will say that the few times they are mentioned, it's pretty cool and distinct.

5 star thread. No, seriously.

Exactly what I was afraid of happening is going to happen. I'm not sure "Tar Heel" will be targeted because honestly, most people don't know the story behind the moniker. But I was talking to my friend that lives in Durham on Monday. We got to discussing the statues coming down at Duke (he's a big duke fan) and in downtown Durham. He said that "he doesn't care" and if statues coming down at college campuses means his kids will likely be safer when they go to college, that he's ok with it. For the record, I grew up with this guy. His dad was a VMI grad and his family had more confederate memorabilia in his home than anyone I knew. He and his family were proud Southerners.

I was shocked he was willing to bend over and take it so easily. I chastised him for wilting and told him that liberals count on people like him - just giving in because it's the path of least resistance. So I asked him, "What if one day you're told that your name is offensive? Your haircut? The clothes you wear? Are you going to roll over then too?" (then I read the story of the Asain broadcaster not being able to call the UVa game because his name might offend people). He kept pointing to the safety of his daughters. And believe me, I get that. I want safety for my kids too. But I can't sit idly by and watch certain groups hold the country hostage with threats of violence and vandalism for the sake of the safety of my children. Because what are we living for if we have no beliefs?

This whole race thing is at an absolute tipping point and the decisions that our government makes in regards to these issues can have society-altering ramifications. Where will it all end? How many people have to be offended before we cave to pressure to meet their needs? To me, this is scarier than any threat of nuclear war, climate change or anything else. I am more and more saddened by the day by what we're becoming.
Whoa dude, is your name gunslingerdick or gunslingerpoosie? Man it's time to find a pair, you are really struggling with this issue - iirc from perusing the board a year or so ago you were telling everyone how much it hurt when you sat on them. Well untie them puppies, throw away them pink panties and put on some boxers for crying out loud.

All this ruckus about statues coming down is unnecessary. They never should have been put up in the first place. Let's recap shall we: The South wanted to spread it's ideology out West - the North opposed - the South wanted war - the South got its ass handed to 'em in said war - the North was commissioned to rebuild the South - the South rejected the help from the North - the frustrated North left - Jim Crow came - still in denial of losing the South cried "the South will rise again" and highways, byways, buildings and public schools and glorifying statues were erected at light speed brandishing the names of so called confederate heroes. Hmmm and I thought GOP'ers and the regressive collective were blatantly against participation trophies - guess not. Can you justify little Jewish kids attending Adolph Hitler High? I'm sure you will, but please don't it was rhetorical.

I also read where you proposed putting this on a ballot and let the people vote on whether the statues should stay or go. I found that interesting since those who should be offended the most by these monuments didn't get to vote if they should go up. I'm pretty sure they had their hands full fending off attack dogs and water hoses.

Seriously doubt that anyone is coming for the Tar Heel nickname, but if they do I assure you I will equally oppose them. I also agree that Robert Lee being removed from the UVA game is just dumb. And ESPN is being raked over the coals for it.

Did you think that up all by yourself? Well done.

Damn, so I am a legend. And here all this time people have been saying it was only in my own mind.

Thanks for sharing your irrelevant, amusing thoughts. Blacks can vote now. The statues are already up. We're not asking to erect new ones. Please answer whether you would support a referendum on the issue.

Nah, no referendum needed just yank them suckers down or save everyone some money and let antifa have at 'em.

I love bagging on ESPN as much as anyone but I can see their point here:

An ESPN executive later wrote to Yashar Ali of New York Magazine and said that the network never worried about offending people.

Ali tweeted this message from the unnamed executive:

“This wasn’t about offending anyone. It was about the reasonable possibility that because of his name he wold be subjected to memes and jokes and who knows what else. Think about it. Robert Lee comes to town to do a game in Charlottesville. The reaction to our switching a young, anonymous play by play guy for a streamed ACC game is off the charts — reasonable proof that the meme/joke possibility was real.

“So, when the protests in Charlottesville were happening, we raised with him the notion of switching games. Something we do all the time. We didn’t make him. We asked him. Eventually we mutually agreed to switch.

“No biggie until someone leaked it to embarrass us and him. They got their way.

“No politically correct efforts. No race issues. Just trying to be supportive of a young guy who felt it best to avoid the potential zoo.”
Hmmm... Wonder whether there are any broadcasters out there with last names of Davis, Jackson, Hill, Beauregard etc that need to get relief from calling certain games? Should have probably included the Pickets, Longstreets, Ewells, Washingtons, Jeffersons et al...
