Hubert Davis contract extended until 2030…

He rebuilt the roster, won the ACC regular season, swept the dookies, earned a 1 seed in the NCAA tournament, and was a couple boneheaded Withers' plays away from the Elite Eight. A summer contract extension offer isn't surprising.

Based on his base pay, he's still susceptible to being bought out/fired if next season isn't up to Carolina standards.

I think this just suggests Bubba knows that NIL was a serious issue in Carolina athletics recently. Because the goal around UNC hoops right now is to increase NIL funds and put a GM in place to modernize UNC recruiting.

Hubert has every reason to be held accountable for winning. He has a .696 winning percentage at UNC! He has a finals appearance, he has a conference crown. He definitely stays on the hot seat because if we don't get a big man this off season Hubert will never see 2030!

With the hiring of a GM and an influx of NIL funds, we should have a legitimate Carolina caliber roster next season. We won't be asking a bunch of bench players to start in our front court.

Which means the focus will be entirely on what the coaching staff can do with a legit UNC roster.

That's assuming the GM and our NIL delivers when we rebuild the roster this offseason. Which I believe they will.

I don't know if the details of the deal are anywhere, but I have to believe this doesn't mean we're locked in with Hub til 2030.

If his coaching and leading this team follows the same unacceptable, garbage, not up to UNC standard, by end of next year at the latest they will buy him out, I hope.

Even when they are winning now against some frankly low major talent level garbage teams...the Heels are so hard to watch. Some guys hustle, but there is a lot of standing around on offense, and nothing really lock-down on defense against good shooting, passing, driving teams.

I saw part of Houston / Tex Tech last night. Either of those teams would beat the Heels on any given night by 30+. Just like Duke.

I am gratified to see that my beloved U has maintained its adherence to its principles! I like the growth of the team and anticipate that the staff changes, especially the GM hire will add to the monumental increase in NIL money and ensure UNC gets back to recruiting like we used to.

This good news couldn't happen to a nicer guy or a more deserving Family member!

Go Hubs and Go Tar Heels!

Credit to his agent. I didn't know he got a 100K bonus for making the NCAA Tournament.

Personally, a bit puzzled by a contract extension 2 years after a contract extension and following a season that didn't result in the third weekend of the NCAA Tournament. Timing a bit off for me.

But not my money.

And we'll see if this turns out to be a great thing or a mistake. Hopefully starting next year, there won't be any excuses for this basketball program anymore. And there should be a pretty strict expectation that the standard on the court is met and met consistently.

Ok serious question. Does Hubert get another year to see if it’s his coaching or lack of “Carolina” talented players? I ask this with a straight face too. I’m torn on this one. I know there hasn’t been near enough talented players on the roster that even deserves to wear that jersey. That starts with the coach and asst coaches to scout the necessary talent. So if the player issue is corrected does he deserve the chance to show he can coach or not? Flip side I feel like with so many games we get down by 20 or more points has to be on the preparedness of the staff. Also I feel like so many other coaches could have gotten more outta these guys. Like I had stated earlier in the season I felt the guys had quit and checked out. So to kinda summarize is it coaching or lack of talent?

Its not a talent issue. Yes the big men were bad as a whole compared to being used to having Kennedy Meeks and Isaiah Hicks as the frontline. JWash was a 5 star before he got hurt. VAL was a starter in the SEC last year. RJ Davis was the returning ACC player of the year. Ian, Drake and Cadeau were all 5 star recruits. Trimble was the Mr. Basketball of Wisconsin. This might not be a talented roster like 2012 or 2017 that was oozing with talent but 99% of coaches would be salivating to work with this roster. People really think Kelvin Sampson or Dusty May wouldnt have this team playing into next week?

As with everything else, if the program lacks talent, that is the fault of the HC.

Bullseye! Right on point. It's the coaching. Even some up and coming current mid-major coaches would have taken these guys further. I'd venture to say UNC has better players overall than Louisville (but if Lou is close then that is a credit to who their new coach went out and got....) but I bet Louisville's coach would have taken this group of Heels players probably to #2 in the ACC instead of middle of the pack like hub did this year.

I am not much of an Xs and Os guy but when watching us play everything looks forced. Nothing is fluid or comfortable looking. Everyone looks robotic and stiff. Nothing improves and nobody gets better. It looks like a bunch of guys slapped together that don’t fit any puzzle or mold and it all goes back to the head man.

See I kk da have to agree any half decent coach would have gotten more outta this team at least the second weekend.

I just watched UCONN and Florida and UCONN almost won despite being completely mismatched. Theyre discliplined with their shot selection and always play hard on defense everyone on the floor rebounds. That was a Hurley masterclass. Asshole or not I would kill to have him drawing up sets with Cadeau and RJ this year

Yes, we had talent but it was a bad mix of talent. The talent didn't fit the playing style and the usage was just weird. How do you start a 6'6" 205lb freshman at the power forward spot? How do you have 4 back court guys and only 1 of them is a reliable jump shooter? How is it that we didn't see Jalen jump shooting in every game? How was it that Jalen was kept as a deep paint back to the basket guys but at what around 220lbs was bounced around by anyone that put their chest in to him, why was he not brought outside? Some of that is coaching decisions and some of it is simply we needed a better fit player at the position.

Lubin fought his butt off, no disrespect toward him at all but at the end of the day he is just way to under sized, opposing centers played over him every game. Life would have been so much easier if we had a couple guys that could dominate in the paint, if just on the defensive end. If you rely on your guards to be perfect defenders then you are going to be disappointed. Big men that dominate the paint erase those guard mistakes, we didn't have that eraser so you saw the guard mistakes that every team has in every game. 2 sub 6ft guards that start for you as compared to duke that started a 6'6" (built like a line backer) PG and a 6'7" 2 guard when our starting center was 6'8"??

Danny Hurley may be an asshole but he is a ass hole that can coach his butt off. I would gladly take him right now if he wanted to coach for UNC. In my opinion he is one of the 3 or 4 best coaches in the game. Only reason I said 3 or 4 is my 4th guy may need to coach at a power school before tag him as at the same level as Hurley/Pitino/Kelvin, guy I am referring to is James Jones, the Yale coach, kind of mind boggling what he has done with that Yale program. I just can't bring myself to say Nate Oates, I acknowledge his success, I hate the way he has his teams play, same with Rick Barnes.

Right - if you could take the “aholery” out of Hurley (which obviously you can’t - it is the majority of his personality, arrogant, petty, thin skinned - let’s other teams players and coaches and fans get to him….)

there’s no doubt he gets the most out of the guys he has on his roster - and seems to have his guys ready to play especially in big games.

His team lost 4 guys to nba and took a vastly more talented title favorite to the wire in an off / rebuilding year.

As much as I hate the guys personality - he’s multiple times the basketball coach that hubs is because he’s a superior strategist, gets his players to commit and play hard from the jump - and that equates to proven success in winning and sending guys to nba which is a better recruiting tool than any feel good living room visit, or hug and console of a guy when he makes a big mistake

Let’s not forget Hurley’s first 4 seasons at UConn were pretty underwhelming, and he admitted being on the hot seat before 23 .. but yes he turned it around with NBA talent.. Love the toughness & grit of his team

What? The man has only won 2 National Championships? How is that better than a guy who played for Dean Smith, who won so much more than Hurley can even dream about.

As for the hated Hurleys, Bobby would have gone to UNC but Dean placed all his PG focus on Kenny Anderson, in large part because he believed that KIng Rice would be better than Bobby Hurley - an anonymous source was quoted in the old Poop Sheet that said Dean believed that Trice would be the next Phil Ford.

It took Hurley at Dook matched with Laettner to make certain that Grant Hill would also go Dook, and then back to back National Championships for the &%@ Dookies..

Dean did not win back to back National Championships, nor has any UNC basketball coach. So Dean's faulty recruiting analyses regarding Hurley cost UNC a great deal and also gave Rat Face his biggest gift ever.

I think they need to hire me and guarantee that they will not fire me unless I still am no better than average when I have 12 former HS All-Americans. I'll take that job for 10 years, at only 1 mil per year.

Always have to show your arse, don’t you? You’re reveling in UNC basketball struggling.

UNC basketball is struggling mightily because the entire ACC is staring at the death penalty - not NCAA version but market version. And that is exclusively because, as even the documentary history of the ACCT acknowledges, the founding of the new league, which began because of football needs, was hijacked by the basketball crowd, led by that little twerp, and most likely actual reprobate, Case. Mr. Moo himself. The purpose for them was to make the new league Basketball First, And they succeeded. And now the wages of sin being death is nigh upon the whole affair.

The way that so many old line Basketball First boosters acted from the start to harm Butch Davis opened many eyes. Even more were opened by looking and finally grasping the immense power that the SEC and BT had accumulsted from football. They thought that were acting in that regard when they began slobbering on that self-aggrandizing punk Mack Brown. Not really a surprise to me, as basketball first thinking makes people basically retarded in terms of college sports power and wealth. Belichick is too old to last long even if he can nail the job now, but this is another that screams how much things have changed. Nobody any more is talking up the gloriousness of being basketball first. Hell, even the utter hoops dolts at IU have caught on. They used to all laugh at the rednecks at Purdue who foolishly tried to compete near the top of BT football. Now they laugh at Purdue football for being beneath them for the first time ever. They saw Purdue's football first athletics department easily surpass IU basketball, and now they want the same for IU

Again, if the ACC survives basically intact, it will be due to the league have trimmed its most obvious football dead weight (Wake, BC, Cuse, maybe Pitt) and replaced with the kinds of schools that create and maintain CFB wealth and power: 1) state Flagship and/or Land Grant schools, and a few possible state schools that are neither but are large and have passionate CFB fans (Texas Tech for example) ; 2) schools with large football history and/or Major Bowl/playoff history in this century; 3) schools that belong to category 1 or 2 or both and also are located in states and TV markets that produce a lot of football talent.

If the ACC is not saved that way and UNC fails to get in to BT or SEC, UNC athletics will begin a slow march toward irrelevance. Many non-revenue sports will be dropped.

Football is Autocrat, and basketball is impotent in and of itself.

Somewhere along the line it was decided to allow Hubert one more season as being the head of UNC basketball. This decision making was done with a plan in mind that involved a new GM. A new GM, in many respects, signals Huberts failure in 4 seasons to identify, secure, and implement into his system new players. At least, the new GM decision will get the AD to a resolution on Hubert.

Is Hubert going to be successful, next season? A decision point now has a set date. I cant see success next season and here is why. It is based on the most important 2 minute stretch of basketball. The final two minutes of the dook game. The team had scrapped back from down 24 by playing transition basketball and shockingly could have taken the win. Carolina had 4 possessions, "all" after timeouts. Those four plays called, were never executed, the ball never even got in the hands of the intended player. Two shots were taken(both at the end of the shot clock) by Powell(one rushed 3 pt and one as the screener rolling to the basket). The other two shots were by Lubin(one a beat the shot clock, short runner across the lane, where he was fouled and Withers made the step-in) and his 3 point attempt with seconds remaining.

The failure was not only in the play but that the play had no 2nd or 3rd options. Hubert/staff had a season of planning/practice/implementation/refinement to an offensive system and at the most critical moments (and they had 4 opportunities) this was the result. This simplicity is the problem. Plays are not systems.

Bubba should live up to the standards of the his job and make an objective decision.
