Hubert Davis

Being honest as I can be, I am questioning JWash's heart and passion for the game. Kid has, in my opinion NBA level raw talent but a raw egg makes a awful omlet. I seen plenty of people in weight rooms all my life but only a very few are really putting in that intense hard work required to build muscle mass, which is what Jalen needs. Jalen by nature is a passive guy yet I have seen passive guys rip players to shreds on the court, have seen passive guys put in amazing work in the weight room. It takes huge dedication in the weight room to add that bulk Jalen needs, Bacot was not close to the physical specimen he was when he left UNC as a freshman. Greatness in any sport is a direct result of how much passion you have and how much consistent work you are willing to invest.

I see Jalen as very talented but SOFT, I don't mean that as an insult to the kid, he is a wonderful kid, one any parent would be proud of but he shys away from the physical and embraces the finesse, he limits himself by thinking he has boundaries that he can not exceed, great players do not limit themselves, they dedicate each minute to each day to getting better, if I am not better today than I was yesterday then I failed, do I allow failure to define me?
Oh, he`s as soft as a poached egg !

I guess my question is will he be fired at 20-14. ?

I say if he hits 20 in any way he survives
I disagree with the process if he survives with 20 wins but gets fired with 19 wins. Kind of an arbitrary round number bias that isn’t based on anything sustainable.

The question should always be is Hubert the best person to lead the program? And can you get someone better than Hubert? Regardless of the rest of the games IMO.

I don’t under and how Hubert can continue if he has any type of love for the program. He’s terrible and never should’ve been hired. He’s way over his head.
I said the same thing. If he loves Carolina the way he says he does, he would undoubtedly know he isn’t getting the job done and would step aside for someone else to lead.

Nothing would make me happier than to read a headline in the morning that he has been fired.

there has been zero improvement and really we are getting worse.

Roy had some bad teams and seasons but I always felt like they were getting better.

hubert to resign at end of season or be let go.
Only chance is if he steps down but that want happen because he thinks everything is okay…He will get next year but I expect the bottom to really fall out next year like 8-20 fallout…It’s time to purge the Basketball Program and head in another direction…The old way of doing things is over…UNC Basketball either gets with the times or get left behind….

I kind of agree with you because I think there are chemistry issues and I think we are going to see multiple guys leaving and entering the portal.

i guess this guy is plugged into coaching hires. I hope this is true, Oats is #1 on my list.

Great article. Dude appears unbiased and hit the nail on the head.

I think most wanted Hubert to work. Carolina lineage, great guy, would have been an awesome success story.... All except he can't coach. ESPN's SVP said it best, "Carolina being OK, is NOT OK".

We are trapped in a conference without big football money influence. That leads to tighter nil budgets. That leads to fewer quality players and fewer quad one win opportunities within league. There is just no room in this equation for an average or below average coach to learn on the job.

It sucks for Hubert because, by all accounts, he is a great person. So is my Aunt Anne but she can't coach worth a shit either. I have to believe Bubba has already started his search to replace Hubert.

Not sure why we think we could lure Oats from his successes at Alabama to take over a dumpster fire here.

While looking up Oats to see if he maybe had some strong NC connections - apparently not - I ran into this Wikipedia comment

During the days immediately after Hurley announced his departure, Buffalo's athletic director at the time, Danny White, interviewed the team's players, all of whom advocated for Oats becoming the permanent head coach.

Which makes me wonder who among our current coaches our players would rally around if told that Hubert was being cut loose. Would they try to save Hubert? Would they get behind Marcus? Who's the players' choice?

CBB is pretty much pro sports now. Oats would turn us around right away with the transfer portal. Alabama will always be considered a football school first.

National Media is now picking up on Hubert being gone at the end of the year…I still feel he gets 1 more but I ask myself why wait….Let’s move on Bubba and be done with this failed experiment…

If this thing goes in the tank the rest of the season something will happen…

Yeah that article cut to the point and made a lot of sense. It needs to be a business decision, not an emotional one. It's tough as Hubert was a great player, and is a great person without a doubt. My guess is he gets one more year, but who knows at this point.

If we lose to Pitt at home and to Clemson on the road, Hubert is gone. Just a guess.

If Hubert is cut loose, who becomes temporary head coach? I assume it would be Lebo or Frederick. I wonder which the players would prefer.

If Hubert manages to survive the next 2 games, UNC has a pretty creampuffy schedule until the Duke rematch. Out of 6 games, only @FSU "should" be much concern. So whoever is coach - Hubert, Lebo or Frederick - will have a chance to fix things and maybe even get us into the tournament.

Thank you for sharing this article. This is a really well written article that speaks to exactly what many of us on this board have been saying. It’s time to show that Carolina, a blueblood premier program, is serious about winning and not more concerned about it’s nepotistic desire to keep it in the family.

We are bringing in a GM to fix this mess. It seems we screwed up the NIL negotiations last year with some big men or Davis was turned off by the money grab. A GM will be the middle man to handle this new BS era of greed so Davis can focus on being the coach.

I expect us to buy 3-5 more players for next season and give Davis one more shot with a majority of the team back. Add 2 real big men and a 1-2 3pt shooters then we could be in business with Wilson, Powell, Washington and Cadeau.

You say cream puff schedule…Man we are the cream puff now….we start a lineup that NC Central would start….Think about that….

WTF is going on that a Head Coach would think this is a good lineup…It’s a clown show…

I'm sure that any coach that comes here would want some type of nil budget guarantees, much like Belichick has, built into his contract.

The University of North Carolina men's basketball program is still a top five job in the country. The dumpster is on fire right now, but the new coach, and his recruiting and portal pull would more than likely fix that in the first year (see Mark Pope @ Kensucky).

As to which coach on the current staff the players would pick... If we let our legendary, Hall of Fame, Carolina lineage coach pick our next HC last time and it ended like this, I'm a hard NO on letting players give it a shot.

Best coach available out of the family.

I TAKE NO PLEASURE IN CALLING FOR HUBERT TO BE REPLACED, BUT IT SEEMS SEEMS LIKE IT IS NECESSARY.

Hubert's future might well rest on how good he is as a rematch coach. Unless I'm forgetting something, Pitt is our first rematch this season.

In 2024 we lost the rematches to Clemson and Duke while winning the rematch against and Pitt, both rematches against FSU, and we split 2 rematch games against NC State. 4-3.

In 2023, we lost the rematches against Pitt, Virginia, NC State, Duke and Wake. 0-5.

In 2022, we won the rematch against Virginia, Duke (twice), and NC State, but lost to Va Tech. 4-1.

Three-season rematch total = 8/9. Not great, but not awful, either, considering the competition.

[Apologies if I missed any; I was just running my eye down the lists and may have missed a rematch.]

We payed taller in the 2nd half. I wonder if we'll do more of that going forward?

Would a different coach play taller? If Sean May becomes the interim head coach, will he go bigger?

Would a different coach earlier in the year have tried to develop our bigger players more?

Let me ask the board a question with humility and sincerity (not trying to incite anyone or anything other than a legitimate conversation).

What does Hubert Davis do well as a head basketball coach?

To all accounts, he is a wonderful person and that translates well when sitting in a living room of a recruits home with his family. That said, he hasn't been a great recruiter, but I would say he's average to good in that department.

I struggle to add to this list....

Recruiting out of HS = A-
Recruiting out of portal = B (higher if you blame NIL)
Developing players = C-
Pregame prep = C-
Halftime adjustments = B
In-game adjustments = C-
Leadership = C-

Hubert might get sacked this year, but I'm guessing he will get one more year. Regardless, I don't know why anyone would think Bubba would fire him mid-season. If he wouldn't pull the trigger on Mack after JMU, then I can't see him doing that to Hubert, especially considering the ACCT gives everyone a second chance to salvage a crappy season and still make the dance.

Nearly four years into his tenure, it’s fairly clear he isn't a top-10 coach, a top-20 coach or a top-30 coach. So why would North Carolina allow that to continue?
Because he’s a really classy guy? Because he’s an alum? Because he made a national championship game? If that's the standard, Bruce Weber, Ben Howland, Paul Hewitt and Mike Davis would have had job security for life. Alas, that’s not how the world works at programs that are serious about basketball.
North Carolina has a lot to think about over the next couple months. Maybe it's time to aim a little higher.

The only answer I have for that is that if we had pulled the trigger this early on Dean Smith, he might have ended his career with a 50-36 (58%) record and not even a single 20-win season to his name.

Ditto at Duke where in K's first 4 years he went 52-57 (49%).

For comparison, Hubert's current W-L percentage is 69%. That's the 2nd worst in my lifetime (only ahead of Doherty) but not actually too shabby. And he might end the season above 70%.

don't sell her short. At this point, maybe at least give her a look.

Sorry, I feel bad picking on Hubes like that. But something's got to give. I think that what has to give to save Hubert (for the time being) is some NIL money and someone who knows how to spend it.

Finally, someone in the media is ready to call it like it is and not sugarcoat shit.

I haven't forgotten the ridiculous gaslighting from the UNC Alumni-Media Complex telling us how this was such a great hire lmao.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Wes Miller looks like a coach that has definitely had his team quit on him at Cincinnati. He has a paid good class coming in, but it is going to be hard for him to last with zero prior sucess and the hot mess this year after paying in the portal, suppose to be good this year to make up for his start, totally going sideways in Cincy.

Careful with "family" wants.
