Huffman commits to UNC

Welcome to the Hill, Mr. Huffman . . . . . we're glad to have you on board, sir.

Nice. Can someone link some videos of him? I assume he is most likely going to signal that Stokes is not happening.

Congrats to the young man but if Im being totally honest Im not sure how to feel about this one.

As expected, and a welcome addition.

He may not be highly ranked or all that polished, but I think he could become a good one in a few years.

We'll see. I'm in the same boat as you. But if we get Washington, I'll feel exponentially better about this commitment. Because I like guys that want to be here. But with the position we're in, we need guys ready to play when they step on campus.

That bumped us up to #13 on 247's class rankings (up from #28, iirc).

It also bumped us to the top ranking in the ACC, just ahead of Clemson, Louisville and FSU, in that order, using 247's odd scoring formula. OTOH, when looking at the average recruit rating, we are 6th in the ACC.

That's 3 recruits. Two more scholarships if nobody leaves early, 3 more if Justin leaves (as most expect).

Top plausible targets at this moment look like:

Washington
Knox
Stokes
Brooks

Am I missing anyone?

Do we need to extend additional offers, or should we be satisfied with 1 or 2 from that list?

As long as the one or the 2 from that list are not stokes and Brooks, then its fine. But if we end up with a class of say felton, platek, Huffman, stokes and Brooks.... well lets just say wed better hope everyone returns.

This has very little to do with Stokes or Brooks. We need bigs and have the available scholarships to sign multiple guys. Huff comes in as a project that we hope develops into a solid role player in a few seasons.

We might not get a top 25 big man in this class but I dont think Roy will take Stokes and Brooks to go along with Huffman.

USC got a commit from a big a few days before Huffman planned visit there. Glad to have Huffman on board but to look at him to take more of a role than Joel James at this juncture would be a mistake. The Heels need a back-up at center for the next 4 years. Huffman feels this role nicely.

He does fill a need, he'll be help on both the playing and practice court, and practice players are very important for a team.

He going to be the dog needed in the trenches, a physical player, he runs the court and blocks shots. His offensive game definitely needs some work.

Congrats to the young man but if Im being totally honest Im not sure how to feel about this one.

This was just a matter of time and I am VERY glad this one is locked in now. Clearly I am happier than most for us to have this kid, I will explain why.

First this kid fits directly to our area of need that being bigs that do not need to either eat their way in to or slim down their way in to being able to play at this level. Guys we are talking about a kid that is 6'9" and weights in 235lbs. Next, folks freak when they see he was a 3 star, may even already be bumped to a 4 but even if he isn't he is IMO as ready and has as much upside as most of the already 4 star bigs out there. So why was he a 3 star you ask? The kid played in Alaska and unless you are off the chain playing in Alaska does not get you a lot of looks from the experts. I fully expect this kid to have a heck of a season at WOG and Tar Heels will be even happier we have him.

Kid easily rises above the rim and has some grit in his game, would not shock me at all to see him start for us by the time he is a Jr, he wil thrive in our style of play. Now the kid does need to work on his scoring moves, he is kinda like Ed Davis was as a frosh, little face up game, but that will come, early on he will defend and rebound and have a good motor. He is much more advanced than Joel was about the over all game, I think we have a STEAL!

Someone mentioned that this could effect Stokes, I don't think it does because Huffman will be seen more as a center where Stokes is clearly a power forward and we need both! I would love for us to snag Stokes to go along with Huffman and then give PJ what ever time he needs.

Agree, I think it ends up either Stokes or Brooks but not both, I prefer Stokes by a lot, hope the kid wants us as bad as I want him to be a Tar Heel!

Also, don't forget about the Heels history of injuries. With Meeks history of injuries, betcha all of us are thankful that we have Bradley coming off the bench this year. Last year Joel James gave the Heels some critical minutes when Meeks had the injury problems. Huffman does have nice little baby hook with both hands that obviously needs some work. If the staff could turn Joel James into a rotation player, I'm excited to see what they can do with Huffman. Great get for the Heels.

Eh.. I think theres a little bit of a spin going on here but I suppose that's to be expected on a Pro unc site with any recruit we get. Im not even being apprehensive because of this particular recruit--he is what he is and every program needs these type of guys- its just the ominous recruiting vibe Im getting, this is two straight signings of guys not even close to being in the top 100. If anyone cares to let me know the last time UNC has done something like this Im all ears...I know we signed luke Maye and Williams and WIlliams was around 70th, but that was a class we didn't need anyone in really.. Of course if hes paired with a PJ Washington then this looks like a much smarter signing. gonna be an interesting few months here, that's for sure.

I am not spinning at all on Huffman, I like him as a player, I absolutely see more in him than I do Brooks, just my opinion is all that is. When we get the kid suited up fans will like this one much more than they do right now!

I will strongly disagree with you on on point, the 2015 class, we actually really did need 1more big man for that class, that we could have a year of seasoning under his belt right now in addition to Luke. It means that we are now really near desperate for big men now and will have to depend heavy on freshman big men + Tony/Luke after next season and we have to pray Tony is not 1 or 2 and done.

I agree. And I think Roy did, too. Look at the bigs he offered:

Ingram
Rabb
Ellenson
Jeter
Skal
Diamond Stone
Zimmerman

You don't offer all those guys if you aren't serious. Roy doesn't use the scattergun approach to handing out offers like some coaches do. So when he makes that many offers he's serious.

(And I still don't understand why we didn't go after Bryant).

welcome young fella ..look forward to watching you develop over next few yrs .... I think he will be a solid player at unc with little time .... glad you are living your dream at UNC

Hope you guys are right, although Id say the need for quality ready to play bigs/PF is much more urgent than the Luke Maye class. Still not getting a warm fuzzy feeling, but I hope Im wrong. I just cant recall too many years where UNC had to dip this deep into the talent pool.

Mike Copeland, Byron Sanders, Justin Watts to name a few deep reaches..... And every one of them has a ring.

I mean...yeah, that's correct but Copeland didn't play in the NCAA tournament, Sanders played a min in 2 blowout games in 05 NCAA's, and Watts played very sparingly as a freshman in the 09 tourney.

That said, I think Huff has more to contribute than those 3 you mentioned.

Welcome to Carolina!
As a former squid, I love your new avatar JuleZ. And thanks again for the GT500 video.

As for Huffman, love the offer. Guys, we are in dire need of big men. as WWJD stated, we offered all these guys recently:
Rabb
Ellenson
Jeter
Skal
Diamond Stone
Zimmerman
...and landed nary a one. We were also considered the favorite for Giles a mere two years ago. Roy would have loved to have signed another big man from the '16 class but it wasn't to be. Now we are down to Meeks, Hicks, Tony, and Luke to man the four and five spots. And Luke is a stretch four at best, IMO.

We're losing Kennedy and Isaiah after this year. Bottom line is we have to sign at least two big men this year, and three would be better. I think we have a decent shot at PJ, about a 33% chance with UK and Texas right there with us. And Knox seemed to have had a great visit as well so we have a decent chance with him. But JJ will most likely be leaving, so evenin the very unlikely event we should sign Knox and PJ, we still need one more of Stokes and Brooks.

Huffman loves to dunk everything close to the rim. We need a guy like that.

Quite a few ways this can go now.

Brooks visits on Oct 7th. Stokes visits on Nov. 11th. PJ's final visit is on October 28th.

IMO, This might just become a first commit, first taken type of deal. In that case, I'd hope PJ decides to commit in the fall period vs the spring. That way, there'd be no doubt we went all in for him.

There's no way PJ comes to UNC with Stokes, Brooks, and Huffman on board. But I don't even think Stokes ends up at UNC, tbh. The way he set up the visits to UT, ISU, Florida, and TCU, felt like he just squeezed us in at the last minute. Wouldn't even be surprised if he pulls a Weatherspoon and cancels.

Brooks/Washington/Huffman would be the best case scenario. And it'd give us time to focus the rest of our attention on Knox and the 2018 class.

Either way, Glad to have him on board. Hope to see big things from him.

I don't think PJ would be the least bit concerned if we signed Stokes, Brooks, and Huffman. He would start from day one and he knows it. Those three need some time to develop. I do agree that Stokes seems to be leaning away from us, I think UT will be his destination.

My guess is that this is the most likely scenario. I would love to land PJ or Knox, Pj probably being my preference. Either would be great, both would have me looking like this:

Betcha we know something by around November!
Glad to have Mr. Huffman as a Tar Heel! I agree with David, he is going to be a good one, no star necessarily but a solid player.
I like that he dunks everything close.

There's no doubt in my mind that he'd start, but that's still a lot of guys to share the 4 with. The thing that's working the best in our favor is that we can offer him virtually undisputed PT. Adding a class of 4 bigs is not only builds up a logjam, but creates even bigger problems with recruiting top bigs down the road. And that's problems we don't need to return to.

Not to mention it closes off any chance we have for Knox.

It's not impossible to see us landing both PJ & Knox. I'd say our visit gave us a fighting chance, and landing a PJ commitment in the early signing period would be huged followed up with a Knox commitment in the late period. A starting lineup of:

Berry/Woods
Felton
Knox
PJ
Bradley

would be absolutely insane!
