Huffman offered

I don't even think he's that big of a project. Saw a lot of Deon Thompson in him when I watched him and that would be phenomenal if he got to that level.

Definitely a project and will need a couple years to develop. If he commits, he will add post depth but UNC desperately needs a stud big man for 2017 and it seems to be PJ or bust for that 5* big man.

Is Huffman athletic? I know a lot of our projects in the past weren't

Seems pretty athletic to me! Looks like he might to bang a little and play with an edge! The more I watch the more I like!

Very athletic. Long reach with broad shoulders. Good weak side defender. Junkyard dog type. Not a big that wants to float around the perimeter. Understands his boundaries and where his impact can be made. Good kid and a great high effort teammate.

Needs some polish offensively. He will contribute with rebounds, defense and effort before he does on the offensive side.

EXACTLY what we need! :)

Love his shot blocking ability. Think he blocked 4 shots in the game I saw him play.

Accurate, Rob. He's a Big who has no illusions of being a Guard.. Definitely an offensive project but can still contribute off the bench early.

Not necessarily... but even if true, PJ's AAU teammate Stokes is also ready for major freshman minutes, and I'm sure Roy would love to have both.

Not that 247 is considered too highly around here (by me included) but they have Huffman's crystal ball at 100% UNC

For a guy his size, looks he has good offensive game to me.... Get the ball and dunk it whenever possible!!!! What else does he need??

Just kidding before people start asking if I'm nuts!!! But if he wants to come to the Hill I will gladly welcome him

calls for the ball, decisive footwork, turnaround jumper off the glass..mins freshman yr, big reserve mins soph..celebrates ala Brice !!!

Why he might look so dominant: He was playing in Alaska

Why he might not be ranked so high: He was playing in Alaska

He looks too mobile, powerful, and skilled to not be a top-100 player. His season at WOG will tell us a lot. But I agree with others in believing that he won't be that big of a project.

Really like what I see in this kid, I see him as being on par with most of the 4 star big men talent wise. He has a frame that can carry a good bit more muscle and it isn't as if he doesn't already have some, love those broad shoulders and love the fact he will dunk anything close. No finesse, just flush it and roll back to the other end, really love that.

I also agree, had he played at a higher profile school he very well could have been top 100, so yeah, I am happy about this. I am especially happy that we got this wrapped up now because ASU and VT were really beginning to heat up with this kid and we need to go ahead and get this big man locked in.

Yep. Very important that we get this kid today and lock in a big man. He looks like such a natural athlete and I love his energy. You can tell he loves the game too with the way he pumps his fists and almost skips back down the court after a made bucket. Like a puppy with so much energy they don't know what to do with it, and you just know they're gonna be a good dog. I got a feeling we're gonna absolutely love what Brandon Huffman brings to the Heels from day 1. That athletic hustle is gonna get him PT immediately.

Yeah Ned, we throw around that word "project" a lot, think it was yesterday someone put the "project" tag on him and I quizzed that poster as to why. Not that the kid is not a project, he is but IMO most freshmen are to some extent. IMO, this kid as a freshman will be as ready as Joel James was going in to this soph (and maybe his Jr) season with us, Joel was IMO a serious project.

Kid kinda reminds me of a little more fluid version of Alex Stevson, the kid that came in with Deon but transferred back to Cali due to a family illness. Kinda interesting, looks like we have the Stevson version locked in and we are recruiting the Deon version in Stokes, wasn't that the same class we snagged Brandan Wright from K's clutches? Be cool to recreate that completely by being able to snag a Bamba or Carter, Bamba would be more similar to Wright.

Yeah I think the only reason anyone could call Huffman a project is because his ceiling is pretty high. He's a much better natural athlete than Joel was and Luke Maye is for us now. He's not a project to the point that he's unplayable, he's just wild. I don't see any reason he couldn't come off the bench for 5-10 minutes as a freshman, commit a couple fouls, grab a couple boards, and dunk whatever he can get his hands on. You need 4 things to succeed: tools, skills, athleticism, and desire. He clearly has the last 2 in spades, and he looks to have a nice set of tools to work with...big strong broad shoulders, rangy arms, leaping ability, nice big mitts for rebounding, and the coordination to shoot a quick turnaround. We'll see if he can further develop that turnaround and little jumphook. I'd imagine staying out of foul trouble and developing 2 scoring moves will be the keys to more playing time.

And I love that Stepheson, Thompson, Wright analogy. Huffman, Stokes, PJ/Knox is what I've been hoping for lately.

The Alex Stephenson comparison is a very good one

Ned, I'm coming around to your way of thinking on that class, those kids Huffman, Stokes, PJ and Kevin would be ticklish if not downright exciting...:D throw a Bamba in there and woooweee...

that would put the bad back into "therapy" once again, one suite in the psych ward ready...again. :)

Watched the video. He runs the floor well, block shots and dunks. His jump shot looks a little awkward though. But he plays big!

It's Stepheson. No V, one N.

I thought he could be very good if he could ever loosen up. Very stiff. Then he left.

I'm a bit worried that we are offering 200+ recruits before we have higher-ranked players in the fold. Very happy to add these guys after we have met our needs. But a bit worried that we will end up with them instead of meeting our needs.

Not trying to be negative. I'll be happy to have a class with guys like #229 Platek, #219 Huffman and especially #127 Stokes. But we need more guys - especially up front - at the level of recruit we normally land.

Hard to be critical of these offers, though. We have holes to fill. And we have to face the reality that times have changed and that the lifting of the NCAA cloud won't necessarily produce immediate results on the recruiting front because all the top recruits have been hearing us bad-mouthed for years.

Frankly all the video tells me is he can make uncontested dunks. I firmly trust coach williams' judgement though and if he wants him thats good enough for me. I've said before and i'll say it again though, 6'6-6'9 guys that can run the floor well but cant shoot are gonna make me an alcoholic.

From a recruiting standpoint, I'd assume this may be a Dotson/White situation.

If we land him, which it sounds like we will, then Stokes is out, which works out fine for us. Then we can focus the rest of our attention on Knox, Randolph, and Washington.

I thought Alex (1 x and 1 A ;-) turned out real well after he left us and always wondered how much of what he learned while with us played in to his becoming a solid player. I may be wrong but I seen to recall from something I read that the kid credited Roy with really helping him early become a solid college player. I felt he was going to be better than Deon and hated that he left us.

I get your point on offering the kids in the 200's but would counter with 2 things. First, would ya take Deon and Alex today and be able to add one more player and be happy? I could make the case both deserved to be top 50. For me it is about how they play and how they fit more than where they are ranked before they ever play their first NCAA game.

Second, I don't think Huffman or Stokes would be guys that would stand in our way from a 5 star recruit joining us. Do you think a 5 star rated big man would see 2 big men in his same class each outside of the top 100 be road blocks for a starting role or playing time? Most good teams have guys on their roster that are projected to still be there when these 5 stars play their first college game, will Jeter scare Carter off and Jeter was much higher ranked than either Huffman or Stokes. How badly do we need a 5 star big man that would be scared to commit to us because we have 2 big men outside of the top 100?

My thoughts.

The good: Seems like a very aggressive player. Little to no hesitation on going back up. Wants to dunk the ball. Can contest shots and/or block them.

The iffy: Most teams he was playing were woefully undersized, including the blocks he was making. Seems to pop off or celebrate way too much, gives me a Demarcus Cousins attitude vibe. His shot looks suspect to broken, little to no arc on it. Every shot that went in from his jumper was basically one that rimmed in.

Seems like a project to me. Be happy to have an aggressive player though as long as it doesn't affect chemistry.
