I guess we will see how biased the polls are now

Ohio State shouldn't be #1 anymore
Alabama should drop at least 10 spots.
USC got beat
A lot of teams in the top 25 looked bad yesterday.

Hard to say it is early should be a new number 1 for sure
But there won't be. The best top 10 performance was UGA. They should get the 5 spot, Bama will drop out and everybody else will move up a spot thanks to all of the top 5 (save Baylor due to an open week) having awful or underwhelming performances against sub-stellar competition. Ole Miss could jump everybody to 6th, but what do you want to bet they are ranked one spot behind Alabama? No way Bama gets reduced too far. ESPN poll definitely won't push them out farther than 6 or 7, and that may be right, but we still don't know for sure. I wish polls wouldn't start until after week 4.

Here is the way I see the top 5 now, current rankings be damned:

1. Mich St.
2. Ohio St.
3. UGA
4. TCU
5. Ole Miss

i don't know. bama was playing at home and had the revenge factor going for them. i think that's the first time i thought a nick saban team was poorly coached. i say bama drops out of the top ten.

Coaches Poll....Ole Miss and LSU moved up 5 places....Bama moved down to #12...and Auburn is still hanging in at #25...

FSU and Clemson both dropped

And/or you should have to have played a minimum of two FBS teams before you're eligible to be ranked.

Polls are fun in the pre-season and in the first week of the season to create excitement. The problem comes when the games actually begin and voters are reluctant to admit they were just flat wrong on teams like Auburn.

Fortunately conference standings determine the bowl tie-ins but the polls are going to become more and more contentious if they ever expand the playoffs. Perception matters a lot in this sport, more than most people seem willing to admit.

The problem with polls is voters view them as cumulative; i.e. if Team X is ranked #11 and loses, they should only fall to like #17 or if they win, they should only move up a few spots, depending on what others do.

It shouldn't be a sliding scale like that; which is why I love how the CFB Playoff Committee does it. They don't take into account the week before's rankings. They re-rank each team fresh. That's the way to do it.

No one is calling it a conspiracy. Just ignorance and bias.

It's ridiculous that there is even a coach's poll since those guys are spending their Saturdays preparing for and coaching their own games. How in the world could they possibly see more than snippets of a handful of games before submitting an opinion about rankings?

As far as the AP poll, there have been numerous studies like this one exploring its bias. They all generally reach the same conclusion, which is that the SEC is consistently overrated. That isn't to say they haven't been the best conference, just that they get more credit for it than they should. Interesting note in the linked study is that ACC teams are significantly undervalued in the AP poll.

I agree that polls are flawed. You pointed out the major flaw with the coaches poll. But even the AP poll, why should I be convinced that guys who probably didn't play a down of football in their life are a good judge of what a good team looks like? Just because they write a bunch of stories about it?

But then again, what's the fix? There isn't one. You can change to the BCS. You can change to the playoff. Hell, you can make the playoff 8 teams or even 16. But none of that would mark a true champion. The only way that happens is to make the entire season a playoff format and the last team standing is the champ. That's why I never had a problem with the way things were done 20 years ago. So 2 teams ended with championships. Big deal. I kind of liked talking about how Colorado would have done against GT in '90 or how a never-to-be-played match up of Michigan and Nebraska would have turned out in '97.

It is worth noting that as of this year, the coaches poll is now just for show and isn't part of anything that determines post-season or bowl selection.

Exactly.

The fix is what the playoff committee does, which is a far more detailed and thoughtful selection process than what the coachers or writers do. I don't know that they would ever move that process to the start of the season but wish they would. Otherwise, we're stuck with what we've got because TV wants rankings next to teams' names so they can plug upcoming games. By the way, I strongly disagree that playoff expansion wouldn't crown a true champion so long as it's capped at no more than 16 teams. But you already knew that.
