Had appt at the VA today, and l saw for my very own eyes the price of freedom!

There l saw the lame, the injured, the disabled, the sick, the hurting, the lonely, the depressed, the down! I even saw a man with no legs! It broke my heart .... for l had forgotten all these since l got out of the Marines years ago.

Let not any of us take our freedom for granted! This country has paid a dear, dear price for our freedom!

As l was leaving, a couple thoughts ran through my mind. One, l think every citizen should spend a morning every now and then walking the halls of their VA hospital and see for themselves what our freedom has cost us. And, two, it just occurred to me that Coach would have made a great Marine! He's tough as nails and there's absolutely no quit in him. He's dedicated and committed!

How blessed l am to be an American and a Carolina Tar Heel ...l do not take this fotr granted!!!

I just can't close this post w/o mentioning a real Marine. He was the starting safety on our 1963 Gator Bowl team. I saw him as he was deploying for Nam in @ '65/66 , at Camp Pendleton, CA. He was a Recon Compzny Commander. Recon just happens to be the toughest of the tough in the Marines. Their job was to jump in behind enemy lines and spy, recon their positions and report. His name --- Jud Spainhour.

Somehow, the VC knew they were coming in. They (VC) were waiting for them in their landing zone and cut them in half with .50 cal machine guns! Jud bled to death on the battlefield.

JUD SPAINHOUR .... a real Marine ... a TAR HEEL born, a TAR HEEL bred, and very sadly, a TAR HEEL dead ... he paid the price of freedom for us!!!

Thanks so much for posting this. As a vet who goes to the VA regularly and sees the ravages of war, it makes me so proud and thankful.

All gave some, some gave all.
