Have shared this many times now, my call would go to Kelvin Sampson. If HD steps down or is let go, who is the best guy we could REALISTICALLY get to replace him?
I could get with that as well…Few is 62 and Jay is 63…Also now with College Ball pretty much like Pro Sports and moving in that direction I wonder if Brad Stevens has the itch to coach again or he is happy as a GM with Boston until he retires or fired…Jay Wright
He would have been a better choice than Hubert when Roy stepped down…No doubt in my mind…I think he took it as a insult that he was asked to join the staff as a assistant coach…And I don’t blame him…King Rice will be the next head coach at UNC and y’all are just going to have to accept it. Lol
Don't recall you saying this when Hubert was hired. But its nice to see you finally developed some standards for this program!I'd want someone that has proven they can get to the NCAA Tournament final, the ACC Tournament final, and has won, at least, a regular season title, and preferably gotten recognized as Coach of the Year. And, they need to have done all those things in less than 3 years.
Can you find someone like that, is the question!
I must emit a strong scent, because you are on mine.Don't recall you saying this when Hubert was hired. But its nice to see you finally developed some standards for this program!
No shit, sherlock. They weren't associated with him when he was hired.I must emit a strong scent, because you are on mine.
We have nothing to do with the choosing of the coach. But, the credentials I listed above are associated with the coach that we have.
Just avoid hiring a coach who misses making the big dance half the time (very likely) and averages double digit losses.I'd want someone that has proven they can get to the NCAA Tournament final, the ACC Tournament final, and has won, at least, a regular season title, and preferably gotten recognized as Coach of the Year. Yes sir! But in this order: TJ Ortzelberger(name a better candidate right now), Sampson, Kelsey. Oh, here is a name that will bring people out of hiding, Rick Barnes.Unlikely but must receive the first call: Jay Wright and Mark Few.
Reasonable and should be on the next tier: Kelvin Sampson, TJ Otzelberger, Pat Kelsey.
At this rate, I think my only requirement would be for the next head coach to have 0 ties to UNC if they move on from Hubert, lol.He would have been a better choice than Hubert when Roy stepped down…No doubt in my mind…I think he took it as a insult that he was asked to join the staff as a assistant coach…And I don’t blame him…

He would cost a ton, worth it in my opinion, and for the "Carolina Style" crowd he ain't it. Hubert is not going anywhere for next year, but for many that scream "run this Dean UNC style", Kelvin is not it. I would love him as the choice, but he's bringing his style, and it does work! So does other styles, but Kelvin has his, I could only imagine the "why aren't you doing what worked with Dean" comments we would hear if they pay enough to get him.Have shared this many times now, my call would go to Kelvin Sampson.
Hubert was ACC coach of the year last year and part of that list. Just saying? The athletic dept has to decide what they want… either:
a) best coach right now, available and willing
b) best young coach to develop long term and grow with the program.
These should have been the basic guidelines after Roy, but instead Bubba went for:
z) a 50yr old work experience guy whom everyone loves but is totally unproven.
So, hoping they don’t go for option z) again, here are a few names to ponder:
Men's basketball Coach of the Year rankings: Our top 15 at midseason
Bruce Pearl's Auburn and Rick Barnes' Tennessee squads face off Saturday. Where do they rank in our top 15?www.espn.com.au
Good point... i did say "names to ponder" - just goes to show how evaluating coaches is not an easy task. Likely why they went with Hubert in the first place.Hubert was ACC coach of the year last year and part of that list. Just saying?
Our recruiting pitch could be, "Hey. I know you play in a better conference, have way more nil money, and make a ton more money than we can pay you but... we are Carolina!"I'm on the Oats or Burce Pearl bandwagon. I have always like Bruce Pearl, but he is older and for a long term solution i like Oats.
He would change your mind quickly after getting his recruits & watching the Heels be easily back in the top 5It’s a hard no on Oats for me.
I see what you did there. 😀I'd want someone that has proven they can get to the NCAA Tournament final, the ACC Tournament final, and has won, at least, a regular season title, and preferably gotten recognized as Coach of the Year. And, they need to have done all those things in less than 3 years.

I have thought of this a few times over the last year. She can coach her butt off and can recruit. Would be ground breaking. However, the good ol boys on the hill would never allow it.Thinking outta the box but what about Dawn Staley. This is tongue in cheek (or is it). I know that’s not gonna happen but good lord what she has done with lil Carolina women’s team. Just giving everyone something else to talk about. Yw.
Sounds like the school better find a way to move to the SEC then before they get left behindOur recruiting pitch could be, "Hey. I know you play in a better conference, have way more nil money, and make a ton more money than we can pay you but... we are Carolina!"
Good criteria Bubs but how about at a minimum, they start with someone that has HC experience?Just avoid hiring a coach who misses making the big dance half the time (very likely) and averages double digit losses.
I think Oats would definitely be legitimate candidate. Why would he leave to come here? How about Jay Wright, wouldn't he be one of the top candidates? Why would he come here? Isn't he currently one of the highest payed coaches with a good gig?He would change your mind quickly after getting his recruits & watching the Heels be easily back in the top 5
