My iPhone (XR yes I’m cheap and old lol) started to freeze up last night from what I thought was from being almost out of storage. So I did a restart on it and it came on and up very slow but I noticed some of the app were missing or not fully installed so I did another restart. Finally it comes up slowly and when I entered the password it would begin to reboot and do that very slowly for about six times. I decided to charge it overnight and try again in the morning. So the next day it was working better so I transferred some of the pics to free up space and hopefully help with its performance. Shortly afterwards I noticed I can no contacts and can’t find a way to restore them anyone with a suggestion? I don’t ever recall doing a backup either. Apple customer service was shocked as well when I called them. TIA

Could be a failing logic board. If it’s still working I’d get anything important you can off of it before it completely shits the bed.

Go to settings, scroll down to the bottom, then throw it in the trash and get an android.

I can't help with the contacts being lost issue, but the first thing I'd suggest you do is to do a backup either to a computer using itunes or a cloud storage location. And then do that regularly thereafter regardless of what you do down the road.

This situation is exactly the reason for doing so. The next thing I'd suggest is moving all those videos and pics to that same storage location through one of the many cloud based services so that they are there and not hogging your phone's memory. Preserve what you still have. If Apple or no one else can help with the contact list once you've freed up some memory, it'll be time to start rebuilding that list.

Finally, consider getting a new phone as soon as possible, preferably one with more memory regardless of operating system. When trying to reconstruct your contacts, don't forget to access your old phone bills for numbers you have called and/or received calls from as it might be the only way to figure out some of that stuff. Good luck.

Good advice. I recently had to replace my phone that I accidentally boinked. I went from the Android to an iphone, but they said they couldn't transfer the data, and the shop I took it to said they could only transfer to another Android (because the old phone was not operational, making any transfer app useless)...so I swapped back out for a Samsung S24 and was able to save everything. I had never set up any cloud storage. Now everything gets automatically saved to the cloud or at least I think that is what's happening, and the peace of mind is very satisfying.

happy to have helped. Glad you dodged possible disaster but take @pooponduke's advice and get that cloud storage.
