Joel Berry makes his return official

For my money the best true PG in the country next season. Kid isn't a stat stuffer, all he does is make his team a heck of a lot better.

I felt Brice had a great season but IMO that great season from Brice had a lot to do with Joel Berry getting him the ball in position's that Brice loves to finish from, not to down play in any way what Brice did. But it takes someone to set the table for a great player to shine and IMO Joel is just that guy that makes his mates look even better.

I have seen great UNC PGs of the past, some were better offensive players than they were defensively, TY Lawson for example, could defend great but only would when Roy jumped all over him. Some like King Rice, not great scorers but good floor leaders and defensive guys. But for me, there were only 2 that I watched that struck me as great floor leaders that got the job done on BOTH ends of the court, those 2 being Phil Ford and Kenny the Jet, I believe I now need to add one more name to those 2, Joel Berry.

Not unexpected, but nice to have it pencilled in.

Had a solid year all round, but felt like he became up big down the stretch of the season and into the tournament games. Looking forward to seeing what 2016/17 will hold for him.
JB has always had his head on right. Even if we won it and he was MOP he and his dad have a long-range view of things. I heard from the outset that JB would be with us for at least 3.
As for next season, I will venture to say you ain't seen nuthin' yet

Joel Berry is the reason this team was much better than the past two seasons. I still cannot believe BillyL and some others were so anti Berry last summer and wanted Britt to be the starter. To me, it was obvious that this team was going to take off when Berry was handed the keys.

Berry-Britt together is one heck of a backcourt.

He is going to be very good next year. Every player has areas to improve upon but he has less than most sophomores at his position. Passing and creating for others is the one thing where he can improve and I have little doubt he will. He brings so much to the floor and is just a huge player to have coming back.

Little piece of advice, don't come to our house with underhanded compliments. You won't last.
Not sure how saying a player will likely be one of the best is underhanded? What would you prefer I say? From a perspective of all 300+ teams he will be the best? Well he's the best returning PG in the ACC and I'll give him credit there over incoming freshmen, but I don't know every other player on every team and there are other good PGs...so likely means that I don't know if 3 players will step up bigger or 30 or 0.

Just curious if you disagree with the comment? I mean its not in any way going to insite people to get pissed. Its likely agreed on by most people. Guess I ask are you mad at the comment, should it be "the best" instead of "one of the best" or is it just that I'm a Duke fan?

Let's just say I'm watching, prove me wrong and you will get an apology, prove me right and bye-bye. Deal?

No apology needed. I get people won't always agree with what I post esp if it were to be thinking more highly of a Duke player or coach than UNC, but I won't antagonize and it would be highly unlikely I would ever start a post. I will converse and if I cross a line...well have at it.

I don't take issue with billy over that, kinda just billy being billy to an extent. But as good as IMO Joel was in a relief role at the end of that frosh season, I don't know if any of us, myself included saw him making such a HUGE leap as a soph. I felt he would be improved but I sure didn't see him shooting the ball so good that he lead us in 3pt %. And as ya know, I have been on his band wagon from the very beginning.

The kid to me has been outstanding, IMO the one guy we had that showed up every single game, I am not sure I recall a game I saw him in this season that I would say was a bad day, he had some better than others but not one I saw as a bad game from him. He was consistently effective as a floor leader as well as on BOTH ends of the court. That IMO is leadership, that is leadership that he will bring next season as well.

Just look at the list of really talentred PGs he went mano-e-mano with this season, really impressive for just a soph!

I personally did not take away anything negative from your comment. Around here we give each other a hard time over our comments so don't take it too hard !!!!

On the Original topic Joel Berry back is the first step to us returning to the title game to finish what they started, Kinda the way it didn't work in 2008 but they gotter done in 2009!!! Go Heels !!!!! THE HEELS ARE BACK BABY !

By "league" did you mean the entire division 1, or just the ACC? If the former, then.. agreed. If the latter, then Mike has a point.

NCAA...and to people who may say I meant ACC. Look about 5 posts up this board and before your post I said best in ACC, but I'm not going to just discount 300+ other PGs especially ones I don't know...

Well then, how about "best you know"?
Sure. Berry strikes me as a Danny Green style guy(not great at any one thing, but good to very good at everything). Not going to just blow away the stat sheet most games, but not going to hurt you. He's got a solid shot out to the 3, he can drive, good defense, smart basketball IQ... I see him as a 12-15 pts 4-6 assists and a few other stats per game guy. I don't think he's going to put up numbers like Cat Barber for State, but I don't think that's a bad things since he has more around him and it won't be on him to take 15-20 shots every game. Berry to me is the versatile PG who can adapt to each game...if he needs to score...if he needs to put up 8-10 assists...

You walked into this one! :)

Typical dukie, if he doesn't stuff the stat sheet where it says score total, then he is good all around but not great? Cat barber, really, yeah, he scored, pretty much all he did cause he didn't defend and he darn sure didn't lead his team to winning anything.

Do ya realize there are major areas for a PG to excel in, not just the one concerned with scoring? Those 3 major areas are being a floor general, offensive end, and defensive end. Now if you need I will be glad to break down all 3 of those so you understand them but I think MOST fans already understand those 3 aspects of the game. In the ACC this past season there were really only 2 PGs that excelled in all 3 areas, Joel Berry and Perrentes and Joel took his team further and IMO was the more critical guy to that success. barber got a lot of pop because he scored a lot, one area of the game but 2/3 of the job he failed in and Joel did not.

I think of GREAT PGs are being able to either put up 17 points with the 5+ assists OR being about to score enough to keep teams honest and put up 6+ assists. So great PGs recently in ACC. Marshall, Williams, Lawson, Felton(clearly there are more). All put up high assists numbers. Lawson and Felton and William also put up the scoring numbers. Marshall never scored a ton but you couldn't leave him open and averaged almost 10 assists per game. I think Berry will be good but I don't know that I would put him with those guys just yet.

And honestly I would take a PG who give me 8 pts 8 assists over one who gives me 18 points 4 assists because its harded to key in on one scorer than somebody who make everyone better.

I should note that scoring obviously needs to come with a solid shooting %. Its why I don't consider Barbers season to be great. His scoring was a product of a large volume of shots as opposed to good shooting.

Funny thing about an assist is someone actually has to finish it before it can be counted as an assist? While I understand gary is not all that popular on DI, he has done a solid job of keeping track of a lot of things not found so easy on a stat sheet and one of the things he loves to look at is blown assists, where the ball was passed to a guy in great position to finish but just was not able to. Had we converted anything close to what you would expect Joel's assist numbers would be around 10 every game last season.

No Joel does not throw the 3/4 court bounce pass and get the finish that blows them away on sports center, he more so takes the easier pass for the easier finish. No offense to Kendal, Ty, or Ray but they were not defensive specialists by any measure, they were known for their offensive production and with kendal it was his passing ability. Rack up a bunch of points and you get labeled great, toss out double digit assists each game and they love you but Joel excelled in every aspect of the game and he is just "pretty solid"?
