JP going bye bye

My feelings exactly Dave.

And for those declaring "he's not hiring an agent and could come back"

NO WAY! He Slammed that door shut with his parting remarks, ain't coming back even if he wanted to.

I agree completely , the editorializing was just unnecessary and arrogant. I lost respect for him.

smart basketball is a phrase that's never been applied to tokoto. and smart people do not burn their bridges when they leave. i.e. jp's handling of his announcement is consistent with his performance on the court.

The decision makes since for him bc he got word that he was coming off the bench and figured he couldn't improve his NBA stock from the bench, so WHY NOT LEAVE!!! Makes sense for him just not to us as fans. I agree that he handled it the wrong way and could've chosen his words better but this will make our team better and more consistent next year, so lets move on and wish him god speed!! Afterall, JPT "Is a Tarheel"

This is it right here. No matter what your reasons for leaving, you keep that to yourself. It was a classless thing to say regardless of how he felt. Instead of remembering him, we are just going to remember how he left.

Unless one of these NBA teams is building a new arena and needs a brick layer, he's not going to be employed by one very long, if at all.

If JP decides to forego the draft, there's no way in hell Id let that goon back in my locker room if I was roy. I'd gladly sign a waiver for him to put dents in somebody else's backboard but no longer welcome tearing Our staff and the chemistry of our team down.

I generally support the kid in his decision no matter how stupid I think he is and no matter how firm I am in the belief that he will never make an NBA roster. I just hate his comments. They still burn me up days later especially after most around the program know how much of a dick he was in the locker room and with certain teammates this year.

Ouch! Harsh, but I admit I laughed out loud.

So, he's sort of got [LD2 / McCants -lite] basketball attitude and IQ, but with sort of Adam Boone / Brian Morrison shooting and ball handling skill set? That doesn't speak well for him.

Or maybe a better comparison is Reyshawn Terry. IIRC he was an exceptional athlete, but caused Roy a lot of challenges regarding "buying in" and being a team guy. I even recall distinctly Roy busting a chair when Terry was strutting over hitting a 3 against a George Mason team in the tourney when they were killing us (they as a 13 seed I think) on their way to the FF.

Sorry for the digress.....

I agree its sad that JPT can't/ didn't get his head and heart right for Heels / Roy basketball program, because he could sure be fun to watch and is off the charts athletically.

I still wonder who will be that killer instinct / tough / a bit of nasty guy for us on both ends of the court next year. I don't see any guy like that on our team. Not saying JPT would've been that guy..... it just seems like we still have so many nice, quiet, introverted, guys, with no killer instinct. No Hansbrough, Ty Lawson, Felton, May. No guy who held others accountable and refused to lose.

AJ did a good job of dissecting the situation.

I hope Tokoto has a great professional career and I appreciate the work he put in and the efforts he made while at Carolina.

Meanwhile, Carolina lacrosse has a huge game tomorrow at 4p against Syracuse in Chapel Hill, followed up by another huge game next weekend at ND. The ACC is wide open coming down the stretch and the Heels have looked great this year. Yall should come to Fetzer tomorrow if you are looking to spend an enjoyable afternoon in the sun, watching an intense Carolina game. Eye candy should be out in full force too.
Bought my tix last night and taking the entire family. Looking forward to my first lacrosse game in a while.

I liked JP, and would always jump up and yell "watch this" to the entire family when a breakaway slam was evident. He certainly gave Heels fans some memorable moments over the years.

I didn't get this decision when it first hit the news, but after reading AJ's article it makes sense. The kid apparently didn't want to buy into what Roy and the team needed for next season. I wish he wouldn't have made those foolish parting words of his (immature and unprofessional on his part, for sure).

Regardless, I honestly hope for the best for the young man. He will always be a Tar Heel.

What is wrong with you people?

Seriously.

LMAO at Tokoto being called a 'goon' . .

I don't like JP's comments and I do believe he was who Marcus was talking about when he said some weren't buying into Roy's system earlier in the year. Regardless, we have to remember that we are talking about a 20 year old kid who has enough talent to play a man's sport for a living but who still has the mindset of a kid. I think IF he decides he isn't ready for the NBA and wants to come back he will have to convince Roy that he wants to be here and wants to be a part of the team (and all that means) before anything will happen, but, thankfully, Roy is much older and wiser than a lot of folks here. That will be something ROY decides, not us.

I haven't told many people this story, but many years ago I was working at a charity golf tournament where John Bunting, who had just been named UNC's football coach, was playing with a lot of other ACC coaches, current and former players and NFL types. I had the privilege of driving Bunting back to his car from the far end of one of the courses, which meant we talked a lot about UNC football for the 15 minutes or so we were together. Some of you may remember that early on he had a QB at the time (I won't mention names) who decided he didn't want to be a part of the team anymore and publicly said he was transferring. There was a lot of bitterness from fans over this, so I asked him if he had spoken to this young man and if so how he was doing. I wasn't prying or trying to get inside information, just curious. What he said really floored me. He said that this was a kid who was getting a lot of input from friends and family on what he should do and that he was very confused and that he hoped that he would really think about what he wanted to do before he made a rash decision. I asked him if he would take him back and he said that he understood the pressure these kids were under and knew that he wasn't making good decisions based on sound information so he felt bad for the kid first and foremost and offered to try to help him no matter what decision he made. He said ultimately he would welcome him back with open arms, but that he wanted to leave it up to the team. If his teammates thought he deserved to come back and be a part of the team then he would be welcomed back. If not, then it wouldn't be wise to let him because he would be a cancer to the team and they would never follow him.

I think that was one of the wisest things I have heard a coach say and I have always admired him for that. In this case, I believe that IF JP wants to be a part of next year's team Roy will welcome him back, but not before the team does. I believe if they and he welcome JP back then we should respect that and welcome him back as well. If that happens, I have no doubt we will see a much different JP Tokoto than we did this year.

I agree that if the players want him back, he should be welcome. After all, he didn't commit a crime or do anything that would bring shame to UNC. I don't like what he said, but I personally wouldn't condemn him for it. However none if it matters, I don't think he would want to come back after what he said. And this is how he is going to be remembered now.

It is pretty much a consensus with insiders and the media that JPT burned his bridges with the team and Roy and won't be back no matter. I really don't know what he will develop professionally that he can't in college but by the same token "he is what he is" and will be the same player after next year college or pro so he might as well go.
