...of pre-summer intel.

- Before the traditional summer pick-up games in Chapel Hill start, in recent years for various reasons Charlotte has been the site of choice for some good off-campus games with current, former and future UNC players along with players from other local colleges. These have turned into venues for some nurture as well as some tough love for the young pups (it's where Nate got his wake-up call last year). I mention this because 7th has gotten some recent indoctrination there. First thing the older guys let him know quick was he won't be able to get by with just athleticism in college --- in other words at his size he ain't gonna be able to dunk on people like he did in HS. Somebody on the UNC staff (I'm guessing Hubert) had already told him he had some work to do on his Guard skills, and the hands-on experience against the big boys drove that home. Word is that it took --- in his most recent appearance the guys noticed his handle and outside stroke have already markedly improved. Good to hear.

- Although these things are inherently fluid, as of now Kennedy, Luke and KW are planning on playing on a NC Pro-Am League team with PJ and others.

- Last I heard JB went home to FL and plans to play in his dad's league with maybe (ugh) Austin Rivers before he returns to Chapel Hill later this Summer.

- Last week I posted that the recent turn of events has put us back in the thick of things with Wendell Carter. Well, tonight I heard (second hand) from someone inside his HS program that if he named a top 3 today we would be in it along with dook --- no surprise, but the third name caught me off-guard --- that supposedly Texas may have gotten his attention. Now that's the first I've heard of them being on his radar. However they would fit the profile for what the Carters are looking for --- a school with a prestigious academic rep that plays big-time basketball. Again, can't vouch for that last one, just passing it on.

Carter is Dukes to lose.

Thanks for all the info Gary, appreciate it, hard to get much in the off season.

I just saw the "teaser" on the front page on McCoy. We are not in his list nor have we offered. Sure is a long shot but it would be nice to get a kid like that to fill out the class. What gets me is the few kids not committed/signed (as we are in a new period), and not sure if we lead or even have a shot at them. Looks like much focus is going to the next 2-3 classes.

Folk laughed at me when I shared that carter to duke is not a done deal, they should not have. Duke started as the strong leader but we made up huge ground when that NOA went public and from what I heard Carter was not really happy with the way UNC was being portrayed by a couple of rivals to us, specifically by a guy named Capel. He can see the wide open PT Roy has for a center or power forward and understands the value of having great back court play. From what i hear there is a fella named Felton talking to him, just sayin!

There are a couple other big men that are very highly sought after that like the idea of playing with Carter and one of them is being extremely heavy recruited by Roy (has been offerred) and the other either has an offer or knows he can get one. I think 2 of the 3 end up playing together, Ky will get in to the hunt as well, expect that and don't be surprised.

Carter & Texas is a bit of a surprise, think that is more the kid likes Shaka and there is wide open PT there but I don't think that goes to far. We are strong, duke is there, expect Ky and GT to get involved more.

Not necessarily, Mikey. I'll just say that a lotta reporters are making a whole lotta assumptions. What I posted last week came from someone close to the Carters. The "junk" and Capel did considerable damage --- and thus I'm not making any calls --- but this one ain't over just yet.

Yep. And actually Roy had the early inside on Wendell before the "junk" blew up in the media. You are spot on with everything else. If you're a Big who wants to develop and actually wants to see the ball, Roy Williams is the guy you wanna play for. Roy is going hard for Wendell, Bamba and most recently, the big California kid McCoy. Roy wants 2 of the 3 --- that won't be easy but don't be surprised of he pulls it off.

I'm still not 100% sold that Texas is a player --- I'm gonna keep my ear to the ground about that but I did hear Shaka has made an impression. As for UK, unless the Carters are being disingenuous about what they want in a school, UK does not fit their profile. But ya never know. And BTW: It may not be safe to assume Wendell wants to be an OAD...

One more thing, another school I've heard trying to get involved with Wendell is Cal. Like Texas and UNC they fit his academic profile, and anytime they sniff around ATL I get wary because of Abdul-Rahim's little pipeline that came into play with Jalen Brown.

Mikey, I have to agree with gary on this one my friend, not saying that duke does not lead today but that lead has shrunk and the trend is not their friend as it once was for this kid. There is a lot of pro-duke hype out there by the so called experts, what may have been true a month ago may not be as true today.

The McCoy relationship is still in the very early stages. I wouldn't read into anything at this point as far as UNC not being listed on his player profile page.

Yeah, I really like the ones that are up to date, listing information from last year.

This cycle the bigs don't have to sit around and wait to see who leaves..the guaranteed pt will be there..i can understand the wings point of view that we have offered..roster will still be loaded with guards and wings..especially if we manage to get all 4 years out of JJ,jb,and Pinson..and that's not crazy thinking at all!!..bigs can pledge right now and be guaranteed..wings and guards,..have to play the waiting game this cycle!!

Dave, a case in point for what you just said was the last video interview with him Rivals posted and the girl's specific questions were all about dook, but in the open-ended questions Wendell talked about other schools (including us). In other words a lot of assumptions are driving the story right about now. We have a year + of negative recruiting to overcome, but Ol' Roy has a long history with the Carters and he ain't concedin' nuthin'.

BTW, I understand there'll be more of the aforementioned pick-up games in Charlotte this weekend. I'll let y'all know what I hear.....

I think at this point we should be more optimistic than we have in the past. For a variety of reasons of course, and I'm certainly more excited about the 2017 class than I was back in March.

The thing is, Roy needs to continue to do what he's doing. We have the advantage of being a blue blood which always helps. Sooner or later, someone big will come our way and when it does, we will be right back on track.

Personally, I'm getting really tired of the damn dukies hyping it up, while trashing everything from Dean To Roy. You bet your ass I want to take them down next year.

Well, some of us would appreciate not having to read the Lord's name in vain. I think you're a good poster and this isn't mean to be a shot at you. I just don't think it is necessary to get a point across.

I gotcha. I understand that some of you are probably southerners and that it's not proper to use God's name like that. I'm a yankee WASP myself haha but most of us are pretty liberal with language.

a little off topic-did not want to start a thread...is NC state really requiring a permit for anyone on campus to use the name of Jesus?

Well this thread got side-tracked really quickly.

Are we in a "Dead period" as far as recruiting goes? Things seem to be really quiet right now.

Coaches are now in what they call an extended "Quiet Period" (sounds like kindergarten, huh?) until July, but this particular week in May is also a "Dead Period".

For example, during next weekend's big EYBL tourney down here (which falls in the Quiet Period) our coaches may watch but not talk with players. Roy & staff can't meet with players during this period unless they are visiting Chapel Hill.

Read a USA today Wendall Carter blog. He said it's pretty realistic that him and Gary Trent Jr will be a package deal (I think he could have picked a better partner, but that's just me. Oh and I think package deals is the chicken way of doing things, sad what basketball is becoming). So unless we are recruiting Trent Jr, he does indeed to be Duke bound.

Would not get your hopes up for Carter. He is a heavy Duke lean.

Harvard also. I know for a fact Harvard is in it for Bamba/Carter

Appreciate the Intel Gary. Just don't get too much into Carter being a Tar Heel. No visit = No chance. Btw UNC is starting to cast out. I think IF Bamba visits we could have a chance; think McCoy will get an offer possibly soon along with Mitchell Robinson with UNC throwing a lot in with Tilmon. UNC is recruiting Nick Weatherspoon as their PG for the class. Jalek is combo guard; Wants 1/2 between Platek and Randolph. Wants 1/2 between Knox and Washington; with most pull coming into Washington. 3 big 1 Pg 1 wing forward at the least. With PG Britt graduating big Hicks leaving and Meeks leaving. Berry, and Jackson gone. That's possible 5 departures from next years team. Just get the Tatum feel with Carter stringing UNC along for the ride. Invite them to the table; but don't allow them to eat. Carter loves Capel; in recent in home his mom was in love with the Duke pitch. From high school senior year tong to being MDAA to Duke to NBA draft; detailed day by day workout plan. Duke's to lose. Him and Bamba love Harvard also.

It's been a mystery but Roy will try to get a small guard/PG this class for depth; with Britt graduating and def potential of Berry going pro. I would expect Berry, and Jackson to not be at UNC for senior year.

Trent has been doing anything he can to get Carter to become a package deal with him, not sure those words indicate it is a done deal, sound more like words to slow Trent's constantly being after him to team up. K is using Trent to try to secure carter but I think Carter realizes that he is the guy that drives things, he is the big fish. "Pretty realistic" strikes me more of yeah but not yeah for sure but for right now maybe. It is like the term they use in politics "cautiously optimistic",. I mean, what the heck does that ever mean? LOL

Oh, and not backing down from really liking the notion of Bamba & Carter but I personally would be tickled with Tillman & Robinson nearly if not as much. This is an amazing class for front court guys, there are literally 10+ of them that can really help a power team day 1.

Even thought Weatherspoon 2017 PG is ranked 73, expect a jump in next rankings; I can see him as top 50 player. Would be a solid pickup for UNC. I also expect PJ Washington to make a big leap from mid 20's to possibly back half of top 10. I say 13. Felton is playing better and with consistently can see him near 20.

Carter has mentioned visiting Big Blue Madness at Kentucky along with Gary Trent Jr.

Ya know what, Carter & Trent to Ky would not be a bad deal for us, duke would not see that one coming. When they go to Kalipari's Big Blue deal they are hard to get away from him.
