Justin Jackson should be a lottery pick..

He is silky smooth and I don't see why he won't be a lottery pick in June.
Because he can't create his own shot and still can't take it to the rack with power and authority.

I love JJ. He's been my favorite player (not named Marcus Paige) for three years. He's really, really good, but let's not pretend he doesn't have some faults in his game, with respect to the next level.

Fair critiques on both counts. On the other hand that extended 3-ball range has opened some eyes big-time, and added to his uncanny mid-range game have him edging up the boards as we speak. Could go either way --- mid/late 1st-rounder for sure now --- but there's a shot at sneaking into the lotto.

His mid-range game is maybe his best attribute. That's not something you see a ton (consistently), even in the NBA. And I definitely don't mean to imply that Jackson isn't good because he obviously is very talented.

It's just when I see him take it weak to the hoop and he gets rejected by a college big, I cringe on what that would look like if he went up with that lack of power in the Association. He'll learn though.

Nic Batum has made a fair living with almost the same characteristics. Which btw is one reason he does well with his game, mid-range.

He may not go lotto, but he has a skill in shooting that is NBA caliber and always necessary. With his length he should have a really solid if not spectacular career. The way these things go he'll be a better pro than 2/3 of those drafted ahead of him I'd bet.

He can create his own shot. He is a borderline lottery pick howeved.
Justin is a create-off-the-catch guy, as opposed to off the dribble. In fact, as one of those anonymous scouting reports from opposing conference coaches recently put it (paraphrasing) "you have to make him dribble from a stop --- if you let him catch it with a any kind of path to the rim bad things happen".

But yeah, marginal pick lottery is a fair description I believe.

Maybe in a down or even average draft year...but this draft is absolutely loaded. If I were an NBA GM I'd try to grab as many 1st's as possible.

The expanded range will definitely bump him up probably to the late teens or early 20's in the draft. What will keep him from the lottery is gonna be based on the critiques provided here. He won't be able to create his own shot against the super quick defenders in the league and he's not bulky enough to not get bumped off of his line.

Who all is "can't miss" early first round grade? I don't follow such things closely.

Obviously no one is a "can't miss" since basically Lebron...but a top 10 of...Fultz, Ball, Monk, Josh Jackson, Issac, DSJ, Tatum, Marrakkan, Fox, Bridges is really really good. Apparently there is also a french kid that is very good.

So Markkanen is definitely gonna turn pro?

Also, is Ball's dad hurting his stock any, I wonder. His dad is kookoo for Cocoa Puffs.

Yes to Markkanen.

And with Ball...him and Fultz are in the top tier, so I don't see him falling past 2. But, if someone was thinking about him over Fultz, wacko dad could have blown that.

Love JJ but them big bodies in the league will work on him. Hopefully he stays with a good weight program and bulks up a bit cause them threes get a bit tougher to hit when you're playing 100 games a year ...

Yeah, I am sure his floater which he has gotten away from lately wasn't creating his own shot. He can create his own shot on that. He just can't break a dude's ankles to create one.

Breaking ankles is not what he does. Almost all his floaters come off catches, not dribble break-downs (which is what creating your own shot means). Case in point, when he got frustrated last night and went hunting for his shot it didn't go well.

Justin JAckson is not a shot creator. He's a catch and shoot type guy. He's good on the catch and shoot 3, but not good on the pull up off the dribble from 3 (watch game tape last night if you are doubting). His patented floater/runner usually comes on iso ball screens when he's dribbling, or on a rub screen where he catches and shoots in one motion going towards the rim.

So we should watch his very worse game and make the call?

Don't see a lotto pick in the cards. Not particularly explosive (for the NBA) nor strong. In a league that values upside over anything else. He has all the attributes that many never develop (great shot, defensive technique, basketball IQ) but he is missing two key athleticism factors that he will probably never have. I hope he does though, he is probably my favorite player on the team.

JJ game is actually more suited for the spaced out NBA then college. He won't be a lotto pick unless he WOWs a team in his workouts. Should be top 20 however.

No but last night was the most recent. I'm the biggest JJ fan there is but he's not a creator off the dribble. He just isn't. He's A tremendous catch and shoot 3 man. Should be an all American in my opinion.

Love JJ as a UNC player but he is not a lottery pick .. doesn't have the inside the lane / finish through contact body .. jmho

He's just not strong enough for a lottery pick--I love the young man but at that level he may need a year in the D-League to get a little stronger and fill out as a man-I hope he comes back but he won't..good luck to him either way-he's played his ass off this year..one bad game wont make me change the way I feel about him--he's a great young man and a perfect example of a student athlete at UNC

I agree with @dadika13. In another year, he's lottery worthy. But he's probably not lottery material in this draft. Although, I also agree with another poaster above that wrote that JJ will thrive in the NBA. His best attribute is how well he moves without the ball (although he hasn't worked the baseline as well recently) and how he can be really productive without having to dominate the ball. I think JJ will have a long career as an NBA starter and it wouldn't shock me if he makes an All-Star team at some point in his career.
