K to take leave of absence..

And it is actually yet again for his back?

Sorry but after the tripper suspention and the bad loss to Va Tech, now all the sudden back is a problem? Deja vu all over again...

Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski will undergo back surgery Friday, the school announced Monday.

Krzyzewski is expected to coach Wednesday against Georgia Tech and then step away for the surgery to remove a fragment of a herniated disk in his lower back. The procedure has an anticipated recovery time of four weeks.

"His back has been bothering him way worse than he's let on," a source told ESPN.

Assistant coach Jeff Capel will coach the team while Krzyzewski recovers. Capel's first game will be Saturday against Boston College.

Now my .02, bad back huh, with the advances in medicine they are putting him under the knife for a disk? Curious.
I hope he comes back with a smile like the Joker in Batman.

Well I hope he recovers. But I definitely won't mind seeing duke struggle in the meantime.

I don't personally see this as him abandoning the team. Unlike in 95, this current team is 20 times more talented than Cherokee Parks and co. He'll be back to try and finish the job. I wonder if it'll be longer than 4 weeks though.

Agreed. People will claim because its the back that its the same thing but hes got 8 nba players at his disposal on this team. I doubt very much that hes bailing but Im sure we will see all the pretend "classy" posters here saying that he is.

Ill grab my popcorn and watch.

Stay classy guys, ones health is nothing to joke about.

Agreed. As someone who has a lumber herniated disc and have been thru this for years, the pain is excruciating to say the least. I've had the steroid injection for mine but it is only temporary. Physical therapy is worthless. Unless you guys have had this, you really can't judge it.

I have had lower back issues all my life thanks to 30 years of golf - constant pain and stiffness and thousands of dollars spent on chiropractic care - I can relate. I also live and work around dookies who have, for years, made fun of Roy's dizzy spells. I'm sorry Ratface is having to deal with this ... but I think it's hilarious for the Pukies. I hope they lose every game.

Trip will sit out 10 games. Then if any more after that lifetime suspension from ACC. Trip should not have been on the bench in game uniform in the Va Tech game. It was a direct insult and slap in the face to the ACC Commisioner. Also rumor of ineligible player on team. I made that last part up. Bottomline, the next few weeks will tell us a lot about the Duke situation. Perhaps the Dookies will now stop talking about Roy's bad knees and his ongoing bout with vertigo.

I'm looking for K to return when UNC shows up .. dookie v & dspn will be salivating over that ........

This is nothing like the Pete Gaudet fiasco. This Duke team is loaded and will be fine (loss to VaT notwithstanding).

Gayson tripped him as they were walking down the cheese aisle. Get well soon, Ratface.

lol

Of course no one wants to see the man seriously hurting but bleed's comment is hysterical.

Get well soon, K. I want you around when we walk the dog on your squad.

My mother has had back issues over the years. Wouldn't wish it on anyone.

From a Basketball POV, this is definitely starting to look like the beginning of the end (at least I would think). Mainly due to his age.

Now we get to see if those who said Capel can't keep Duke afloat were right.

Anyone, either fan base, poking fun at the health of somebody is just lame.
I agree 100%
As a new member on this board this is really disappointing to see; especially from senior posters. Oh well.

Wishing you a super quick recovery Coach K! But once you return...its on!

I have the exact same issue. Will be scheduling for surgery in aonth as soon as my work schedule allows. I wasn't able to walk with it just before Christmas. I love to rib him as much as the next, but that kind of trouble is almost unbearable. They can fix the herination, bit not solve all the pain issues associated with it. Truly a debilitating problem

Bad week for puke. Sir trip a lot suspended, bad loss, and now coach K. I like Tatum okay for a Dukie, but he aint carrying you without Allen. K and Allen can come back the same game.

miracle medicine in derm and he's back just in time for our game at that crappy gym...

"Hello pot, I'm kettle". You exude "class" with all your posts.

I pretty much never see you post other than to start game threads and to follow me around and comment on whatever I say. I never thought I'd have a groupie on a message board, so I suppose I should be flattered.

I disagree. Sitting on the bench watching your team get whipped had to be harder than if he was in Durham, doing whatever he wanted to.
I suppose they should video the operation, so all the doubters know it's real! ;);):D

So would it be preferable for them to look fantastic under Capel to improve his chances of taking over down the line? I could never root for them of course but he wouldn't be the worst choice from our perspective.

Hope he is back in time for us. Id like to beat them down without excuse. Anyways get well soon.

I think Coach K doesn't take this leave now at this point if he enjoyed coaching this team / the team was molding well together.

Something seems seriously wrong in Durham right now. But, I could be wrong. We will see.

I think the majority, if not all UNC fans wish K a full recovery. The problem that I have with K-Rat is all the other issues that surround the man. The way that he teaches all of his players to "flop" is only one the issues I have with K. The man should retire. Back injuries are nothing to play around with. The man has every NCAA a record except Wooden's NCAA titles. I said the following at the beginning of the season and i will say it again here. K will retire a disgruntled old man upset that he didn't break Wooden's record. What good is it having all those records if the quaiity of your life is terrible? The man should retire.

Despite the shade of his mane , K is getting long in the tooth. Jumping up and down off the bench cannot be good for his back. The Mick should put some pressure on him to retire.

I agree 100%

Excuse me for not wanting his full recovery to come till POST RETIREMENT!

Correction in my post....It looks like Trip was just sitting on the bench in Duke gear for the VA Tech game.
