But after an unofficial visit Thursday to the University of North Carolina, Campbell bumped up his announcement date by informing his head coach, Gary Wortham, that he wanted to officially disclose his choice Aug. 3 at 1 p.m. on Woodbridge's football field.
Woodbridge begins football practice that Monday morning.
Campbell called Wortham on his way back from Chapel Hill with his revised plan.
"He told me he was moving up the time sooner than he expected," Wortham said.
Campbell did not reveal his choice to Wortham over the phone, but it appears likely that the four-star defensive lineman will select the Tar Heels as his college.
The 6-foot-5, 312-pound Campbell has visited North Carolina seven times, a total that is more than any of the other 11 schools on his final list, which include South Carolina, Auburn, Tennessee, Alabama, Florida, Ohio State, Virginia Tech, Georgia, N.C. State, Penn State and Maryland.
Overall, Campbell received 42 offers.
Wortham said North Carolina head coach Larry Fedora has done an outstanding job of recruiting Campbell.
"Everything he has done has been done the right way by far," Wortham said.
Campbell made the trip Thursday with members of his family, including his mother and grandmother
