Late stuff (SMU game)...

i loved the effort we gave. much better execution offensively in big stretches. that being said SMU isn’t a good team. ranked close to 50 in all the rankings. keep it in perspective.

The effort was the best all year and I dont care what anyone says when EC got into foul trouble we was forced to have our best combo of 5 IMO on the floor together.

Lubin
Seth
Jackson
Powell
RJ

We are small embrace it and learn to play with it.

We only won that game because we shot the ball well. We miss a few of those 3s and its a whole diff ballgame.
Maybe just maybe the shots were better cause they were wide open and not forced, and the right players were shooting. Drake taking more 3’s than say Withers. I have no problem with Withers taking the occasional 3 just to keep the defense honest but Drake is showing a better ability to make them

We won that game because we defended them with intensity! Even if we shot a lesser %, we were stoning them to the point that they had several segments of 3+ minutes without scoring a single basket! We got open looks and ensured the correct peeps took them. Ian and Drake matured in front of our eyes and Ian allowed others to eat (esp RJ) while Drake shot with confidence. BUT feel free to be miserable after an extremely fun win!

I re-watched this game last night, wanted to see if I had any different impressions on second watch and I kind of did. Off the top, kudos to the SMU coach, I was impressed at his switching defenses. Shows you a 3-2 zone, morphs it to a 2-1-2 and all the sudden they are in hard man, re-minded me of a Dean game plan in that aspect. SMU's big men are big but they are sloooow, especially that 7ft kid, they just don't have a lot of quick twitch with their bigs. Not impressed at all with their little boopie PG. Looks to me like their record was more a factor of who they have played more than how good they are.

Cadeau, first, that little joker can play some amazing defense, he will fight ya as a defender, he just takes to many risks looking for steals and the whistle blows. He has to get better at managing his foul count in the first half of games. While capable of amazing play and shows it at times, off the top I recall 3 passes that were simply way to casual that ended up in steals by SMU, like some kind of temporary mental break down? Simply put, he has to be stronger with the ball than that.

RJ, played MUCH better than my initial reaction felt, he had 1 bone headed casual pass that we were very lucky to get back but outside of that RJ was really solid, hope his nose is not broken and he forced to wear a mask. JWit, BY far our most athletic big man, played one of the best games he has played for UNC, took 1 corner trey I could have done without but on 2 more, pump faked and drove. I liked HUbert had one of our bogs step in to the middle of that zone and actually take mid range jumpers. JWit nailed one, Lubin another, JWash actually took another mid range jumper from the same spot and missed but I loved the shot more than the result. I liked Drake's treys, even the ones he missed were good looks. Cappy Jack, that dude is cold blooded, he still at times gets a bit lost on the defensive end but as a on the ball defender he is not bad at all and Drake is really good on the defensive end and would be seen as much better as a wing than a under sized 4.

Seth, looked to me a half step slow on the offensive end, was still a major defender but not sure he is 100% back from that concussion. After a concussion sometimes your legs are not quite back, feel a little dead legged, suspect that was what I saw with Seth, should be much better next time out. J-Wash, defensively not bad, one of his better defensive games but the bigs he defended did not have much quick twitch either. Lubin, I kind of isolated on him for a while, he does work hard but his feet are really slow and that quick twitch stuff he lacks. Lubin is a bit of a mix between Garrison and Deon athletically, not exactly a compliment.

Hubert, one of his better games as a coach, I did like his substitution patterns, especially more minutes for JWit and JWash and less for Lubin and Tyson the DNP. I liked when they went zone Hubert moved a big in to the middle, so often that guy in the middle has been a guard, I like the Brice Johnson attack of a zone. The only thing I did not like from Hubert this game was we starting clock killing with over 4mins left, don't do that, play it out, this team needs to step on the opponents throat with no mercy when they have them staggered all the way thru the final buzzer, don't give them feel good minutes at the end, finish the it off and let the little leagues call mercy. Shame on that crowd, it got way to quiet late in that game, place should have been rocking, it was not.

Edit is to add, we ducked a MAJOR bullet on that play where Jack was fouled and it called a F-1, which it was. When Jack came down he first came down on 1 leg, how he didn't sprain or worse break his ankle is beyond me, look at how that landing happened to see what scared me. I will take a hurt tail bone every time over a broken ankle, very fortunate!

I think with Seth missing extended time he’ll need a couple to few game time speed in order to catch up. It’s tough getting back up, even with hard practices.
