Late stuff (VT game)...

IN a odd kind of way, I see Hubert as a head coach in a similar way that I see drafting guys like Jack or Drake in to the NBA at the next NBA draft.

I shared many times, Hubert was not the guy I preferred to take over for Roy reason was that I felt, still feel the same way, that Hubert needed seasoning as a head coach before being tossed in to the lion's den. I watched Matt being tossed in that lion's den and it crushed him as a head coach, literally destroyed him. Yet another coach that Roy felt had a bright future saw his coaching career basically end because he took a job he was not ready to do successfully. Hubert was set on that same path, not because he does not know basketball but because he needed that time at a much smaller program to develop his own approach based off what he knows works as opposed to what he thinks may work.

First time head coaches have to tinker, the student always feel they know more than their teacher, the child is always smarter than the parent, well until the child becomes the parent. I wanted Hubert to go work thru the maturity as a head coach at a SW Montana st like school. Some small school where he could tinker around with this or that concept, keep and perfect what works and toss the things that don't. Then move up to a stronger non-blue blood program and learn to adjust his precepts to compete against higher level programs and if he finds success there then and only then maybe he is ready for the power gig.

Don't do to a coach what the NBA does to it's draftees that have not proven to be college stand outs but have that potential tag placed on them. Bring them in on a rookie contract, they spend the bulk of that 4yrs learning to play, much of the time in the G-league but getting very little NBA court time. And FINALLY as they are about to find their real game their rookie contract is up and they hit free agency and it is that next team that gets to benefit from the investment the drafting team invested?

With Hubert we now have nearly 4 seasons invested, drove me nuts but he has tinkered with some strange concepts that he clearly felt were great ideas until they weren't. His decisions have started to make far more sense as of late, maybe he has realized that the education he got from Dean and Roy was the better path all along, would be a shame to toss him when he was about to turn the corner as a head coach, as maybe UNC and it's fans could maybe get the returns on that investment. Maybe he just needed help, odd that this turn around happens at about the same time the UNC is hiring a basketball GM message was sent? Don't hire him before you should but now that you have think twice before you fire him to soon?

The difference between Matt and Hubert is that the team totally revolted against Matt, this current team is still 100% behind Hubert and that to me speaks very loudly. We know Hubert knows basketball, he played for Dean, he was hired by Roy as his assistant coach, he broke down teams to understand what they were doing on court for ESPN, you can't question his knowledge of how the game is played. He knows how to deal with his players or this current team would have quit on him, they didn't. He is for sure hard headed, most coaches are actually (all are but I was being nice). It may have been just as simple that he just needed to work thru those what I called crazy notions to get them out of his system, maybe he has done that. IF he has we may have the coach we wanted all along, I do think he has more to learn but if he has got thru all the crazy notions, I think I can live with the rest until he has fully matured in to the coach he could become. Why did it take him so long to toss this crazy notion or that one, didn't I share that all coaches are hard headed, maybe it took him this long, maybe things had to get this bad before he finally realized, and maybe there were other issues he had to deal with that we don't fully know about?

^ D, as you stated, the players support Hubert, the confidence they have gained during the last six
games indicates that. Hubert will be our coach next season, that seems obvious.
He and his staff will definitely have better NIL funding; the transfer portal might provide a
top player or two. We will see. HD has my back.

Good points, and look, coaching is nuanced.

On one hand, sometimes it takes a while to figure out your team, and the old cliche of fans not being at practice is certainly appropriate. WIth that said, there ARE some things that nonetheless shouldn't have taken so long.

Similarly, the staff has schemed us to a FF, but on the other hand (for example) there is just no excuse for the self-own of disrupting the key action of Dean's Secondary --- It works for ANY roster.

As you said, this season has been a case-in-point of "both things can be true". We have good coaches who have unfortunately made some not-so-good strategic decisions. The more of those they correct, the further we will go.

LIke you, I am pulling for them as hard as I can.
Indeed. Honestly, for a long time, it seemed HD played what he thought were his best players, even though these "best" combos resulted in small ball. Probably not bad coaching but small shooters need to be able to make shots, we know how that went... Out of desperation and nothing to lose, I don't think he had a choice but to focus on playing guys in their natural position and going with size, guys he invested in, JWith, Lubin, and honestly CTyson. This line up also requires a change in coaching strategy which he seems to be making. Tbh tho, hitting shots, especially the recent three point success is the difference. If the quality shooting was there consistently from the beginning, all the other issues wouldn't be as glaring and this story line would be much different. I guess Roy was right, "Everything looks better when the ball goes in the basket."
