Lifestyle changes

wife did this stand-up desk thingy two years ago...thought it was stupid, especially for someone that had to be in court or depose a witness at any moment.

she laughed at me and said "you might aporeciate it also"...well, not only has she continued this "joke", but she's working out everyday, she's 124lbs and ripped, and she has started an incentive in her firm that is making everyone else get in shape.

she's also the one that talked me into hummus two years ago, so clearly she's got my best interest.

Says the guy who can't go to bed on time. ;) Easy to say, very hard to do when you're engrossed in something and feeling productive.
Standing and walking while at work is one thing I actually am really good about. Of course, it helps that I do have to walk into the warehouse a decent amount most days to do inventory and shit like that.

And your pants.

Seconded ^

Ditto for pic of strum's ex gf (was that from this thread or another one?) Either way.
I wish I had some. You know... we used to have nice, lovely relations.

I told you, google Jenny McCarthy Playboy... from the neck down, BAM! Well, my ex was only about 5'2". Her face looked a lot like Kristy Swanson (Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie), only brown eyes and hair. I kid you not about the boob job. I'm amazed to this day how accurately that guy duplicated that famous set. She got her money's worth.

Whether voluntary or involuntary, what are some lifestyle changes y'all have made recently? I know @heelmanwilm mentioned in another thread that he gave up Cokes.

For me, I gave up smoking in November. I wasn't a heavy smoker by any means -- smoked about a pack a month on average -- but I was experiencing some heart issues late last year and decided to give it up. Giving up cigs wasn't too difficult, the much tougher thing to give up was energy drinks. I love those damn things. So tasty and they give you a jolt that coffee and Coke just can't. It was getting bad though, I was average 1.5 of them a day, pretty much every single day of the week. I've given those up cold turkey since December 1st, minus one day where I slipped and had a red bull. THAT has been tough. Every time I go in a convenience store, I want to get a Monster so bad but I stop myself.

What about y'all?

Well, I started listening to Tim Ferriss's podcast about 6 months ago. He is the original life hack guy and runs in some pretty cool circles amd his podcast consists mainly of interviews with world class (as he puts it) performers in their field. he spends an hour or two trying to get to the bottom of what makes them tick, discussing habits, routines, favorite books, etc I cant recommend this podcast strongly enough- he interviews military guys, actors, entrepreneurs, authors- it runs the gamut and they are all fascinating.

So from that, I now meditate (I do a guided meditation- its on Itunes) pretty much every morning first thing. I also try to write in a journal each morning, but I dont do it with the consistency that I do meditation. I can definitely notice a difference in my state of mind and is really quite enjoyable to take 15 minutes to get the head right first thing in the morning.

I have also reduced my alcohol intake significantly during the week- it is just wasted calories and I was on the verge of turning into a complete fatass.

Lets see- we also just bought some land and are about to build a house- so that is taking a bunch of time.

I started cpap treatment last week. Sleeping with a mask and air blowing in your mouth is quite a change.
The past 5 years I have struggled with energy levels during waking periods. I have severe obstructive sleep apnea. I also rattle the cage with my snoring. I am not severely overweight. I weigh 240 @ 6' tall. But I carry my weight well. I have a very thick build.
I work a high stress job and could tell things had changed with me since I hit middle age. I finally listened to a close family member about their struggles with apnea. I had a sleep study done that showed how severe it is. My O2 levels were in the low 70s during sleep. I never made it to rem sleep either. I wake up at least 10 times a night suddenly. They told me when i have an apnea episode, i totally quit breathing. My diaphram spasms to kick start my lungs. When that doesnt work, my body wakes me up to induce breathing. I showed to have 5-10 epoisodes every hour. If i dont wake up, i die. Also leads to high blood pressure, heart disease, diabeties, stroke, low testastone, impotence, and many other bad things.I was shocked at the side effects of sleep apnea. So we went with the machine. I am still adjusting to the mask and getting the right fit. I am starting to feel better during the day. I don't fall asleep as soon as I sit down anymore.

Were you thinking I was about to go Willem Defoe in Boondock Saints?
Not that there's anything wrong with that.

I have reluctantly decided to stop time traveling. Despite all the warnings of unintended changes to the future, I stepped on too many butterflies in my travels.

Without going through chain of connections, I want to apologize for causing the following realities due to my explorations of yesteryear.

* The popularity of the Kardashians.
* The hiring of Mike Kryshefski (it was going to be Jim Spanarkal for some reason.)
* The Pontiac Aztec
* El Chapo (would you believe he was supposed to be a pediatric dentist?)
* The decline of SNL after the 1980s.
* The prequel Star Wars movies.
* New Coke and the loss of Crystal Pepsi (these were actually related...)
* Michael Jordan's baseball experiment.
* The current slate of presidential candidates (though at least Vitale isn't running in this reality.)
* Everything else. (If you ever wonder "how did we get to this?" It was probably me.)

Fortunately, I never caused any reality changes that were more than nuisances.

I have decided that rather than go back and correct these things, and likely cause even worse realitied, I will just retire from time travelling altogether. Apologies to anyone who has been negatively impacted by these events.

Wait. When, specifically, did you quit? I just need to know whether you're in any way responsible for the current situation regarding Red Lobster before I pass judgment.

"When" is a relative term when time traveling. I both have already and yet to quit depending on the time line we are in. But I do not recall doing anything to negatively impact Red Lobster.

Now if something happens to Benihana in the next few weeks, well...

Both of my boys went off to college which made my wife and I empty nesters.....we have adjusted well.....well she has adjusted well to things...since both of my boys were athletes I spent a LOT of time at the gym and the ballpark...now....unfortunately I spend waaayyyyy to much time at the casino!! Really my only vice, other then eating, that I indulge in! My job is not stressful nor is it very fulfilling....with all of that in mind, I am making some changes. I am pursueing a job that will be much more satisfying/fullfilling to me. It will require some travel but not a lot. My wife and I are also on a lifestyle change with the food that we eat and the amount of exercise....with bad knees I am limited. This new job though is located less then a mile from a community center that has an Olympic size pool....swimming is in my future!!!! I have a question though......any of you guys live in or close to the following cities:

Wilksboro
Monroe
Tarboro
Sanford

In Virginia:
Temperence Village
Glen Allen

In Georgia:
Cummings

These are some of the locations that I will be working if this job comes thru!

It's just Cumming with no 's.' You'll love the area if you do work around there. Up-and-coming area but it's still fairly rural. Near Lake Lanier.

Here is how Belk is pronounced- Belkses

When I was a kid they would call it Belk-Berrys

I assume the whole franchise was owned by two corps

I'm a little late to the liquor part of the thread but I don't really have a long history of alcoholism in my family so I feel pretty comfortable drinking a decent amount. I usually have a few between the time my wife goes to bed and the time I go to bed.

I don't eat at night though.

Late to this thread.

I got diagnosed with type 2 diabetes last summer. So, I changed my eating habits and started working out more.

I lost 25 lbs and my my doctor is amazed with my progress. I had to buy all new clothes and folks I have not seen in a while don't recognize me.

Just making a list of folks in the area...hopefully will start traveling that direction in the near future for business..a;way good to have contacts and leads on places to eat, visit and to stay away from!!!!

I gave up added sugar right after Christmas and it's been tough but so rewarding. Feel so much better in the late afternoons (I was always crashing, irritable, moody .. unless I consumed more sugar) ... much better sleep ... and I've lost about 8 lbs (although I'm fortunate to have never had a weight issue). I realized that I started my day with added sugar (usually sugary cereal) then had a sweet snack midday and mid afternoon (I was addicted to sugar loaded coffee drinks) .. then of course a sweet snack after dinner. All of those are 99% gone (other than the occasional special occasion desert). The first 10 days was brutal but now my cravings have completely changed and I literally feel like a new man, especially the 2nd half of the day.

Biggest thing for me was finding snack/drink replacements and that came in the form of non-sugar jerky, nuts and lots more fruit (thankfully I've always liked fruit). I also went headfirst into the popular sparkling, flavored water world, to fill the gap of my once-daily soda addiction .. found out that I wasn't so much addicted to the flavor or sugar but the carbonation, the fizz. I like LaCroix okay but much prefer the 16oz Deer Park flavored sparkling waters - they have four flavors and are very cheap by the case at Sam's Club.

I've thought about giving up the sugary drinks. I have no real issues with sugary food. I seldom ever eat any sort of dessert. I can not do flavored water though. Absolutely hate it. I have done it in the past and drank only black coffee and water. I just have to suck it up and do it again, haha.

I hear ya on the flavored water...but there is (IMO) a big difference when it's carbonated/fizzy. Plus there are many flavors to choose from nowadays. I would encourage you to try the Deer Park flavors sometime. Give yourself a week to get used to it and you very likely may be able to kick the sugary drinks completely out.

Carbonated flavored water is awesome. I highly recommend it to anyone who is addicted to sodas and is trying to stop. Ideally, any "flavored" drink should be kicked to the curb, but you can't go wrong with the stuff when trying to cut back on sodas.

I just can't. I've drank at least one soda every day of my life since I was probably 5, save for maybe a handful of days.
