MILLEDGEVILLE, GA – THI caught up with 4-star quarterback and 2016 UNC class member Logan Byrd last Friday before his team’s game to discuss his season so far and how he’s preparing to get to Chapel Hill.
Byrd’s team, Veterans High School, won at Baldwin 28-7 on a cold, wet, windy night. THI s also running a full story with thoughts from Byrd’s coach, David Bruce, and with some intel gathered by speaking with some other people around the program.
Also included in this package is the video of this interview, a photo gallery, and seven videos of Byrd in action that night.
Here is the transcript:
Q: I just talked to coach, you guys have gotten off to kind of a rough start, there’ve been some protection breakdowns and a few other things and you’ve had to run a lot, how have the first four games gone as far as the passing and some of the issues you guys have had?
Byrd: We actually lost out number one receiver in the first game, so that was a big blow to us, but we’ve always had the mentality that you’ve got to have the next man up. That’s kind of how we’ve gone about things, and we’ve been lucky that our running game has been as good as it is and we’ve been effective with that. That’s really set up the play-action when we’ve needed to.
Q: You are obviously a big part of that running game, and coach said that with the passing situation what it is you’ve had to rely on that yourself a little more.
Byrd: Yeah, when it’s 3d-and-3, 3rd-and-2 or 4th-and-1 230 pounds, you know, you’re running downhill so you get the job done.
Q: As far as Carolina goes, you were there (for the Delaware game), take us back he process of choosing Carolina and now that you’re getting closer and closer to being there.
Byrd: It was great, other than it being wet, rainy and cold, it was good to hang out with the guys again and seeing everybody. The reason I chose Carolina was because of the coaches. They’re great people, just the whole college at North Carolina is just great. The atmosphere and the town, Chapel Hill is definitely a place that anybody would want to be. I’m going to go in there and make North Carolina great again.
Q: You’re talking about running downhill yourself, Marquise’s first touchdown (vs. Delaware) he bulldozed a guy and dragged him into the end zone. Did you kind of envision yourself doing that yourself someday?
Byrd: I liked it, it kind of looked like me a little bit. He’s a little bit shiftier than I am, I give that to him.
Q: Are you doing much recruiting for Carolina, calling some kids that either have committed or are on the fence?
Byrd: Our class is pretty much full, we only have about 2 or 3 spots left so here and there. (Wilmington, NC TE) Garrett Walston, I know he’s committed to Georgia right now, but we’re still kind of talking to him a little bit to see if he’ll flip.
Q: Are you going to enroll early or are you going to graduate in May?
Byrd: I am. Actually, I will enroll after this semester on January 8. So, I’ve only got like 3 more months.
Q: So that it, you just graduate and you go in there, so obviously on some kind of a plan I would imagine preparing for January.
Byrd: Right.
Q: What do they have you doing? For example, diet, weight training, etc?
Byrd: We haven’t really gotten that far yet (diet), just getting in the weight room and getting after it. Getting a lot bigger, a lot stronger because college is a whole different animal. That’s definitely something I’ve been working on.
Q: Are you going to have a chance to get back up to Chapel Hill before you start school?
Byrd: I am. I think I’m going to take my official for the Miami or the Duke game but I’m going to both.
