Luke Maye to Draft?

What are the chances that Luke Maye leaves for the NBA after this season?
I haven't posted here for years, but for some reason your name resonates as someone who used to post some really awesome threads in the past.

Zero. Where does he play in the NBA. He can’t play inside in the NBA. His offensive skills are perimeter oriented. Biggest issue is that he couldn’t cover anybody at that type of position on that level. I see Luke as being a pretty good offensive player on the college level, but don’t see him ever playing in the NBA

He has a shot to play in the NBA. But he will never get drafted before the 2nd round.

I might have said Bird had 0% chance to be in the NBA, but many also said he had 0% chance to start at UNC, to be on the Wooden Watch, to earn a scholarship, to be ACC player of the week as many times as Bagley, to have multiple 30/15 games, .........

I wouldn't put anything past Luke Freakin' Maye!
(but I do expect him to be back next year)

Draymond green is about the same size but much more athletic and found his niche. Luke has an outside shot of making it to the NBA

You guys dont watch the NBA if you think he has no chance. He’s 6-8 and can score from anywhere on the court. Those dont grow on trees. He’ll have a tough time playing defense but if you can constantly make shots, especially from 3, you will always have a place. His chances are way better than Hansbrough’s or McAdoo’s were, at least long term

It would seem to me he's too undersized and lacking athleticism required for the NBA (not saying he's not athletic as he clearly is.) Then again I've learned not to doubt Luke f****** Maye when he sets his mind to do something.

I would think that with his family background and that he probably is having the time of his life at UNC that he will be back for his senior yr. The boy amazes me every game, to start the year I thought maybe this is a fluke but Maye can play with anyone on the college level. He has a very strong work ethic so I am not going to bet against him playing in the NBA one day. I absolutely love his game and his attitude and his desire to be a team first kinda of guy. For selfish reasons I want him back next yr. I heard on the post game Saturday that he is one of only 4 UNC players to ever have multiple 30+pts /15+ rebound games in a season ! One of only 4 guys ever at UNC and you know the great players that have played here . He is a special kid. I wish every UNC team had a Luke Maye on it.

I bet our Luke could make the NBA if he really improves his ball handling skills. Learn to make tough shots off the dribble and there is always a place for you in the NBA.

But no way he's leaving this year.

While one the one hand the question seems almost absurd, thinking that he would produce as he is this season a year ago was even more so. This kid breaks the mold and I am figuring out that this kid can do about anything he decides is important to him. He does not fit the NBA metrics but I for one am not going to doubt him.

If your big doesn't have lateral quickness, you have little chance to make it in today's NBA. That's Luke's weakness. If he doesn't improve on his lateral quickness, he likely has no future in the NBA. But he can put the ball in the bucket in numerous ways so maybe he'll get a bite.

If the Heels win the NCAA title with Luke going for 35 pts and 15 rebounds in the title game he is NBA bound...latter part of first round. I hope that happens.

The best set shot since Larry Bird.

Well i would love that of course for us and for luke, but he will never be drafted. Hes a great story, a great heel, deserves all the accolades he gets, hell Arguably the team mvp. But he aint getting drafted. (I’m not gonna diss him by listing his limitations that would prevent a gm from taking him). Now it wouldnt shock me one bit to see him work his way onto a roster. That in itself would be a great story too.

Disrespecting Tar Heel legends like Sam Perkins is wrong.

You should wait until 12:00 before you start drinking.

Let's agree to disagree. Every year there are thousands of folks that say certain players are not good enough or ready for the NBA. Many said Tony Bradley would not leave last year. Brace yourself for a shocker my friend. If the Heels win the title and Maye goes off in that title game the chances of Maye coming back for a senior year are slim and none. if Luke was in the NBA right now he would be one of the top 3-point shooters in the league. NBA teams are always looking for a 3-point shooting specialist off the bench. As of right now, Luke is coming back, but if the Heels win the title and Luke goes nuts in that title game, he ain't coming back.

You should also wait until 2pm to move over hard liquor.

At the least he should test the waters and get feedback from the NBA. It really has helped some other Tar Heels who did and then came back.

I do believe if he stays healthy he will play Pro ball somewhere and make really good money doing it. I do not discount the possibility he might make it to the NBA at some point.

I love what Luke has done, but what in the world are you basing this "one of the top 3 point shooters" on? Do you mean he'd be in the top third? Not even sure of that. the line is further back... plus - there are 3 or more better 3 point shooters than Luke - on single teams alone such as Golden State, Houston, San Antonio, Cleveland, etc.

Luke has a 47% 3pt shooting percentage and the Top guy in the NBA is 45%, which happens to be Reggie Bullock. Yes, the 3pt line is further back in the NBA, but Luke is shooting many of his 3's from the NBA line. Never said Maye would be a superstar in the NBA but he could prosper as a 3-point shooting specialist off the bench. I think those of us who automatically assume that he will be around for 4 years could be in for rude awakening if he leads the Heels to another NCAA title. I think he not only needs that NCAA Final Four spotlight but an NCAA title to go with it and a monster title game performance.

I'm somewhere in the middle of @Steat and @heelmanwilm. He's no Larry Bird like Steat likes to say, but heelman and a few others here are acting like it's bizarre to even suggest such.

The dude can shoot (and rebound). I have to believe that his extraordinary shooting touch would at least get him consideration even if he'll struggle to guard (hello Kyle Korver, Andrea Bargnani, Eric Gordon, etc). And I also think his personality make up will benefit him. A coach would love to use Luke's work ethic as a role model for less committed, more talented players. I'm not saying that's a reason for drafting him. But if it's close between him and another guy that's not as committed, that might push Luke ahead.

I learned last year, I won't doubt Roy's genius ever again. I'm learning this year, don't ever doubt Luke Maye again.

Just for the record, I'm not suggesting him being drafted at some point is crazy. What I am saying is that anyone who thinks Luke will leave early this year and be a first round pick is either drunk, high, doesn't know what they are talking about or some combination of the three.

Zero chance Luke leaves. I do hope that he can work his way to get invited to NBA workouts this summer for draft evaluations though. That would be a nice experience for him, right now that is far from even being guaranteed, as he does not even project as a possible 2nd round pick.

Luke and Joel could make a good living in Europe, but it is a LONGSHOT for either to ever play in the Association, let alone garner the interest of GM's enough to leave early. Joel didn't get a sniff.

I watch the NBA more than college. Will Luke be able to create his shot in the NBA? I doubt it. You mentioned his shooting, well mostly everyone can shoot in the nba. Especially when open. Luke also struggles on defense at times. He'll have to show he can create his shot better to get a chance.

Reggie Bullock currently leading the NBA in 3% FG shooting and it took him several seasons and teams/trades to find his place. So with the right spot, who knows what Luke can become. However, I wouldn't bet on him.

If Luke were 2" taller I think he would be a late 1st rounder.

I think I agree. What makes all of those Euro guys so draftable? It’s not like any of them play lock down defense. It’s their shooting touch and size. Granted, a team can draft one of those Euro guys and keep him stationed overseas until they feel they’re ready.

I used Reggie as an example too. However, also with Reggie shooting ability he can guard the 2 and 3 spots very well on defense. He's the main reason Detroit traded away a better defender in Avery Bradley. Luke will have to do better on defense to match his shooting.

Tell me why Luis Scola can play 10 years in the NBA and Maye can’t. I honestly don’t know.
