Mauro Regrets Not Visiting

No disrespect to UConn, defensive end Sal Mauro says, but he wishes he had visited North Carolina instead over the weekend.
It's understandable that the Oradell (N.J.) Bergen Catholic defensive end would have chosen to spend time with the Huskies. They're closer to home and they've shown a healthy level of interest in the 6-foot-3, 235-pound defensive end.
The trip to Storrs, Conn., ended up going well, too.
"I would say the facilities really stood out at UConn. I liked the facilities and also the coaches," he said.
But Mauro had an opportunity to visit UNC. His teammates Emmanuel Appiah and Gene Coleman were in Chapel Hill as part of a small sort of junior day that was less eventful and maybe more personalized than previous events.
"I didn't go," Mauro said. "I was going to go but I didn't make the trip. Before (the weekend) I've spoken with the coach (who recruits the area), Coach Heck. He's the quarterbacks coach. And I've spoken to the wide receivers coach. They were just saying more about getting me down to campus. That's what they wanted.
"That definitely will be a visit for me in the future. I'm regretting that I didn't go," Mauro said.
Even without having visited Mauro knows UNC would probably have his attention if he were to ever make it on campus.
"I know a little bit about them. I know how the academics there are. I think it would be a really good school for me," he said.
Mauro said he's spent time in Myrtle Beach, S.C., but he's never visited North Carolina for any period of time.
He knows the Tar Heel coaching staff is interested but they have not yet offered. Mauro already has offers from Army, Furman and Navy. He said UConn, Rutgers, Pitt, Syracuse, Maryland, Lafayette and Lehigh are among the other programs that have expressed varying degrees of interest.
He visited Maryland and Syracuse recently, in addition to his trip to UConn, and while Mauro said he plans to visit another couple of schools in the near future he does not have a reschedule date set for a UNC visit.
