I grew up in Elizabethtown and would eat Melvin's Burgers for Breakfast as they would open at 7:30 am. Melvin's opened in 1937 , I can remember going there as early as 1979. Pat Melvin was the owner and got his hamburger meat fresh all day from the Red and White grocery store across the street.
You watch the burger being made and it is very simple they fried the hand patted burger then the lady would put it on a bun and add chilli , mustard , slaw and onions and black pepper . Simple enough , I can't tell you why they are great but they are ! I call them the Melvin's magic burger. Every bite is a trip back to my youth. I told my wife when I go to take my last breath here on my earth journey to please cram a Melvin's burger in my mouth to take on my next journey to the after life.
Elizabethtown is next to White Lake and on the way to the Brunswick county beaches so in the past it caught a lot of beach traffic and it's reputation spread across NC. They even have a picture signed by Kelsey Grammer when he was in Melvin's . I guess Grammer was making a show or movie in the area. If you are with in 5 hours of the area take a trip to White Lake and have a burger at Melvin's . Also If you know of a great place to have a burger post it. I have wanted to try Johnson's drive in , in Siler City but they are only open 10am to 2 pm tuesday thru Sat. The days I work ! I will get there one day.

Methinks somebody has a burger problem.

So Beef Burger formerly Biff Burger has been in business for 53 yrs. The owner says he started working there at 16 I think and then bought it and is there every day. He looks like he maybe around 70+ yrs old.

Well this place has the best burgers in Greensboro. I go by on my day off every monday. If you are every in Greensboro it is a great burger combo at a good price (6 dollars)

The place is a dump ! Physically that is. The place looks dirty and out dated really bad ! I think they clean the tables maybe in the morning and when they are closing, not in between though.

The neighborhood was bad but UNCG is buying up a lot of that part of lee street so it is improving.

They have signs on the doors and windows that make you wonder about the place and neighborhood like the following :

" If you are drunk go eat somewhere else"

"We are in a poor neighborhood with a Rich outlook and we have a really good dern burger"

Maybe the best part they have an old Ms. Pacman + Galaga arcade console Warning though the joystick makes it hard for ms. Pacman to go down ! she does ok going up and left and right though.

With all this said , truth is I would not change a thing ! I hope the old guy will continue to keep the place open for many yrs to come and it is the only place in the world I have ever seen them cook a burger on what looks like a oven that the grill trays rotate in a counter clockwise motion. 2 trips around the oven and the burger is done !

Melvin's was owned and operated for many yrs by Pat Melvin and his wife. The place has to be at least 50 yrs old as I am 45 and it has been there my whole life. People from all over the state would stop by to get a Melvin's burger. What made it so good? Glad you asked ! The meat was brought over from the Red and White Grocery store a couple hundred feet away during the day so you always had the freshest hamburger. And Pat kept it simple you could get a burger or hot dog but not a cheese burger ! No cheese. And you got a bag of chips and a drink with it. Pat would grab a handful of hamburger meat and make a patty and they would serve them from 7:30 pm til 6 pm Moday - Saturday. I have been in Greensboro for 20 plus years but I still think about the great burgers I had for breakfast on my way to high school and then on my way to college classes in the morning.
The place is under new owners and I was told they no longer buy the meat from the Red and White so it may not be as good as it once was.

My Grandmother lived in Bladenboro so I've had Melvin's but was never a big fan. I man it was OK, but I never understood the fuss. I always thought Fergeson's in St. Pauls was better, honestly.
