Moon Pie and a Diet Mtn Dew

No, they give you a cup so they dont have to worry about what you meant by coke.
Great point. I can't tell you how many times I've been handed a cup while the cashier asks me, "Now did you mean a Coca-Cola? Or a Dr. Pepper?" Oh wait, that's right. That has never happened because once they hand you the cup the transaction is over and they spend exactly zero time "worrying" about what I meant. All this talk about minimum wage jobs has reduced your reasoning skills to a commensurate level.

And fast food workers are always pleasant and talkative with me.
Only because they're asking you whether you're going to make the child support payment this month.

Weak.

"Get me Coke"
"What kind you want?"
"Mountain Dew"

Such a conversation would be completely normal to me.
This is correct. Happens all the time with my friends.

"Gonna run to the store, want some cokes or anything?"
"Yeah man, that would be great. What kind you thinking?"
"Probably Dr. Pepper or Mountain Dew."
"Either one is good with me."

All kidding aside, I've lived in the south most of my life and I have never, ever had someone at a restaurant ask me "What kind?" when ordering a Coke. Not even once.

Honest question. Does this happen more in rural areas of the south? Maybe I've never had this experience because my time has all been spent in Winston-Salem, Chapel Hill, and Charlotte.

It doesn't usually happen in restaurants, but it has happened to me before. It could be more of a Georgia thing, due to Coke's roots in this state.

Of course you have to specify if someone else is bringing you a drink. But it is is common southern vernacular to refer to all carbonated beverages as Coke.

Quit being difficult you twerps.

THN11 and 71-00 are partly right. RH is also partly right. And like usual, I'm all the way right.

It is common for folks in the South to refer to all soft drinks as "cokes". I have done that. But it's not common to get follow up questions when ordering a "coke". That's absurd. If you order a coke, you're getting a coke. Unless of course they say, "we only have Pepsi products" which would signal that the server took you literally - that you wanted a Coca-Cola.

We're all pretty much saying the same thing lol. Neither 71 nor I claimed that you could say "coke" at a restaurant and then have the server ask what kind you want. Like 71 said, it's common vernacular to refer to them all as Coke.

Also, did anyone else know a UNC grad created Pepsi? I didn't know that until recently. That information is not enough to make me drink that vile liquid though

It is common for folks in the South to refer to all soft drinks as "cokes".... If you order a coke, you're getting a coke.
So if I understand correctly...

When referring to soft drinks in general, they are called Cokes.
When referring to a specific soft drink, it should be called by its actual name.

I can live with that. It's a little troubling, but not as bad as having an illegitimate child by an Applebee's waitress.

I despise all the dark colas. I quit drinking caffeinated beverages about 15 years ago. I drink a sprite in restaurants if concerned about water quality. To satisfy a carbonated desire, ginger ale for me. So decaf tea, water, then ginger ale.
And moon pies suck imo.
