CHAPEL HILL, N.C. --- Larry Fedora has traditionally favored competition over naming starters well before the season opener. But in the case of the UNC quarterback job, there was apparently no point in continuing to go through the motions.
The UNC head coach affirmed on Friday what media and the general public have known for some time: Mitch Trubisky will be UNC's starting quarterback in 2016.
"I thought Mitch did a good job this spring and didn't just assume he was going to be the starter. He worked extremely hard and earned it," Fedora said in a school press release. "We always want to have competition at every position. Mitch is the QB with the most experience returning, but he worked hard this spring, competed every day and deserves to be the starter."
Trubisky, a rising junior who took all the snaps with the first team offense throughout spring ball, gained considerable experience the last two seasons as Marquise Williams's backup, including putting up stellar numbers last season.
In 2015, Trubisky completed 85.1 percent of his passes for 555 yards with six touchdowns and zero interceptions. He came off the bench against Delaware to complete 17-of-20 passes for 312 yards, all career highs, and rushed for 39 yards on six attempts. His 282.0 passer rating in the 41-14 win was a school record.
