Name That Song

How did you ever guess?
Lucky guess.

What, just cuz you got good head, I'ma break bread
So you can be livin it up? Shit, I...
Parts with nothin. Y'all be frontin. Me give my heart to a woman?
Not for nothin, never happen, I be forever mackin.
Heart cold as assassins, I got no passion.
I got no patience. And I hate waitin
So hoe, get yo ass in here and let's R-I-I-I-I-I-DE

I know who that is but I'm going to see who else knows it. I might get in another argument as I think this artist is a buster too. But I realize I'm in the minority here. I mean, he has a few that I'll play but most of his stuff seems like he's trying too hard and that he takes himself way too seriously. And in addition to not liking his music, I can't stand him or his skank ass wife.

Don't tell me you don't know the difference
Between a lover and a fighter
With my pen and my electric typewriter
Even in a perfect world where everyone was equal
I'd still own the film rights and be working on the sequel

Had to keep coming back to it but finally figured it out... Everyday I write the book - Elvis Costello

I backed my car into a cop car the other day
Well, he just drove off - sometimes life's okay
I ran my mouth off a bit too much, ah what did I say?
Well, you just laughed it off and it was all okay

Here's something a little easier... haha

All right stop
Collaborate and listen
Ice is back with my brand new invention
Something grabs a hold of me tightly
Then I flow that a harpoon daily and nightly
Will it ever stop?
Yo, I don't know
Turn off the lights and I'll glow
To the extreme, I rock a mic like a vandal
Light up a stage and wax a chump like a candle

In dreams we do so many things
We set aside the rules we know
And fly the world so high
In great and shining rings

If only we could always live in dreams
If only we could make of life
What, in dreams, it seems

Need the video man.

Choke, choke again
I thought my demons were my friends
Pity me in the end
They're out to get me
Since I was young
I tasted sorrow on my tongue
And this sweet chocolate gun does not protect me

That's right!
Trigger between my eyes
Please strike!
Make it quick now!

I didn’t check this thread out this weekend and of course it was full of ones that I knew.

@gunslingerdick so you’re the self proclaimed board hip hop expert but don’t like Eminem, Kendrick, Kanye, or Jay-Z (those are the 4 I know for sure you don’t like)? Serious question, who are your top 5 or 10 because I’m legitimately curious who you don’t consider to be a buster

This one was easy, I just didn't check this thread over the weekend. Love Modest Mouse.

KoRn - "Coming Undone"

KoRn is an excellent, excellent addition to any work out mix.

Let's see if anyone can get this. It's fairly new but not like this year necessarily

In a few weeks, I will get time
To realize it's right before my eyes.
And I can take it...if it's what I want to do.
And I am leaving,
And this is starting.... to feel like
It's right before my eyes.
And I can taste it.
It's my sweet beginning....
And I can tell just what you want.
You don't want to be alone.
You don't want to be alone.

First of all, I never called Eminem a buster. I was simply heckling that weak parking garage episode that looked so forced and rehearsed. I fully acknowledge that he's a legend in the rap game. And I like many of his songs.

Sort of the same with Jay. I don't like much of his music but I recognize that he's a hip hop icon. He's not in Marshall's class though.

You are correct on the other two you named. And you can throw J.Cole and Drake in there also.

Top 5-10? What? My favorites? Or who I consider the best rappers ever? Those list would be different. But I get what you're looking for and I'm happy to oblige.

I don't listen to much "mainstream" rap produced after the year 2000. I just haven't found much worth listening to. Any rap that's new to my library is going to be somewhat underground. Recently I've been listening to a lot of Jedi Mind Tricks, Vinnie Paz, Celph Titled, Apathy, 7L and Esoteric, Swollen Members, Madchild, Main Flow, Dilated Peoples, Evidence, Gift of Gab, Blackalicious, Deltron 3030 and maybe a few more even more obscure rappers.

If we're talking historically great rappers, then Rakim, Nas, Scarface, Redman and Biggie are at the top of my list.

But my favorites? Of all time? That's tough. I'd probably start with Run-DMC, Gang Starr and The Roots. I love Tribe and De La and still listen to them frequently as well. When I want the grimy shit, Reggie Noble is always a favorite as is the whole Def Squad clique (EPMD, Keith Murray, etc). I grew up with Dre though and still see him as the most influential hip hopper of all time. Love Dre (but not so big on Snoop). Outkast still gets a lot of play as does KRS, Masta Ace and Big L. A few others I like and listen to are Tech N9ne, The Wu, Big Pun, Mobb Deep, Cypress Hill, Busta Rhymes, and LL.

That list isn't comprehensive and I'm sure I'm leaving some out. In rap, at least for me, it's more about who I don't like listening to. And Drake, Kendrick, J.Cole, Kanye, Wayne and a few others top that list.

Take your History of Rap 101 seminar to a different thread Linger Dick and Heel Zee.

Back to guessing my song. Seems like something @JuleZ '02 HEEL might know, just cuz you stay current with some stuff (Jake Bugg, e.g.). But that's just a guess.

The Beastie Boys are their own genre to me. I simply don't lump them in with other "rap" music because they were just so different. But of course, I love the Beasties. In fact, if I had a soundtrack to my life, I might choose Paul's Boutique.

PE, well, yeah, I like them ok. I recognize their music as incredibly impactful and groundbreaking. They were by no means a regular in my tape deck growing up, nor do I listen to much of their stuff today. But they had some gems for sure.
