No, that means you're watching the thread. You can adjust the user settings in your profile to determine which threads you watch. I believe the default includes threads you start and threads your post in.i thought the binoculars meant that.
Oh, and that's correct. The larger avatar is that of the poster who started the thread. If you post in the thread, your smaller avatar will be on top and slightly offset to the right of the original poster's avatar.Does that show that you posted in that thread . . ?
