Next Coach

Bubba just cracked a joke during Belichicks press conference. "Everyone has said the last few years that the first two calls you should make are to Brad Stevens and Jay Wright, so that's who I called first but they weren't interested"
Maybe a little (not so) tongue in cheek shot across hubcaps bow ...

I think that we should pull a "Belichick" for the next basketball coach.

We should consider hiring Rick Pitino (71 yrs old, very fit for his age), who is younger than Belichick (72), and slightly older than Rick Barnes (70) and Kelvin Sampson (69). Folks might not like his past extracurricular activities, but the guy can coach, and although much older than HD, he has much more fire in his belly to coach, to compete and to win. He would likely be tempted to come back to a Blue Blood program to restore it to its former greatness.

With the Belichick model, we would hire his son, Richard Pitino -- who also knows how to coach and win -- as the assistant coach destined to be the head coach like Steve Belichick.

Yes, we would have to shell out serious money, probably similar to what the football program is spending, but it would definitely be a big time hire which the big donors would fund. The NIL money would flow again, the families of top prospects would be confident that their sons would be properly coached up to reach the NBA, and UNC could then be great again.

wes is only mentioned at this point because for whatever reason, the powers that be seem enthralled with the connectivity of a carolina guy getting the job. he’s not proven to be a big enough winner to warrant the job either.

You i might be better that we didn't hire Wes first. Not we have seen Hubert can't coach and seen what Wes does at othere places so now we can just skip the crap and hire an outside the family guy.
I want UNC to be the best team in the country. For that to happen we have to have the best talent in the country with the best coaching of that talent. For that to happen our staff has to do a great job of evaluating talent before they offer and understanding how that talent fits in to the staff offensive and defensive approach.

Our current staff in my opinion is not good in talent evaluation and does not have a clear approach on either end of the court. It literally seems like throwing a dart in to smoke.

1st call is Jay Wright. But no one good will come until we figure out nil.
I agree with this, but to me...which came first - chicken or egg? Several people have stated that probably big $ NIL donors (including possibly MJ?), are keeping their powder dry, holding off on making big $ NIL commitments until they expect good ROI: a legit coach who will get the most our of coaching up their NIL investment (players). I think few see Hubs as that. But they would see that in say a Jay Wright, Sampson, Few etc. I think

It’s a truly bizarre opinion that this program should only be led by someone with direct UNC ties.

So you automatically eliminate 99%+ of the coaching population right? The Roy stuff was different. He was coaching a top 5 program and winning already.

I hate to break it to the “keep it in the family” crowd but being connected with UNC has absolutely 0 correlation with being a good head coach in 2024 and 2025.

If it is a requirement, then having UNC ties simply puts you on 3rd base already. It’s a weird almost nepotism.

The bigger picture questions that are more important includes:
- Does style of play matter? Do UNC teams have to run? Or will you be willing to have a slower pace HC who has won with that style?
- Does age matter? I argue this is no longer a longterm economy so it shouldn’t.
- How much does past baggage matter?

The more restrictions that are placed on a potential new HC, the less options there are going to be.
