Next HC

I think if you go into it with the expectation that the next coach will be around for 20 years is unrealistic regardless if they have UNC ties or not. If you want someone like that, you shouldn't go for a younger coach. You should go for a coach in their 50's who will finish their career at UNC. I don't think people in their 30's and 40's have the mindset of planting somewhere for that long term. Kind of a generational thing. People are more mobile today.

So if you want to get someone who will finish their career here, you need to look for someone like Mark Few or Jay Wright. I think Mark Few's program structure is more transferrable. Jay Wright is in a perfect college spot for him. I can't see him go anywhere other than the NBA.

Again, I don't see a coach in their 30's or early 40's being here for 20+ years. So if you're ok with that, then go for that. But UNC isn't used to not having a ton of stability at this position.

IMO, the next coach NEEDS to get UNC to be a program that has NBA equity again. It's something this program has been missing for a while. The Michael Jordan aura is less relevant to recruits these days. Kids are too young.

They probably already know their successor though.

I don’t think Roy does this without a coach in waiting lined up and he’s likely an assistant to provide recruiting continuity and as a gesture of Roy’s loyalty to his staff a la guthridge stepping in for dean.

I can Live with any Coach that will cover the 3........
This!!! I don’t really want a coach on the bench currently because they will probably play the same style as Roy and not guard the 3.. we also need someone that can recruit well. If Hubert is that guy, why do we struggle right now in recent years??? Don’t blame investigation.

This is always fun to do the Match game or who's next game.. But this for sure already is a done deal, Might as well give it a chance.. Hubert is African American and Not too old so he can for sure relate with young players..

We hire Hubert and it sets us back at least 5 years.
Truth is that none of us know how good Hubert would be. We don't really get to see Roy's assistants do much coaching. He's obviously not the miracle shooting coach most of us hoped he would be but he might be terrific at the other things.

When Dean left, he handed a loaded roster and the reins to Gut. Roy isn't leaving his successor as loaded a roster (although it isn't awful if everybody else stays), but will he hand the reins to Robinson? I seem to recall that Rob's previous stint as a head coach wasn't all that great.

What happens to Rob if he's passed over for someone else on the coaching staff?

If an outsider is brought in, what happens to Roy's assistants? Doherty got a lot of criticism for not keeping some of his predecessors' people. Who should stay?

I'd rather have Shaka Smart over Hubert Davis is they are wanting to hire a Black American. Shaka has head coaching experience, only 43 seems to be a good guy.

If we poach some top level coach, I won't respect us and honestly will likely retire from following this sport as it will have devolved so much and this would be the final straw. This is UNC, we don't hire mercenaries who will leave at the next big opportunity or to try and fill a gap with someone with no respect or knowledge of our program, our tradition, our legacy.

It will take time no matter who steps into the gaping abyss that is Roy's shoes to fill and although Wes Miller may not be a "top coach" at present but he will work harder than anyone. He's young, has fire, has the bloodline and would do so much with the talent he'd have here.
I mean unless we hire someone with Kansas, Duke, Kentucky bloodlines, that coach most likely would never leave for a different college job so we wouldn't have to worry. The NBA is different but I'm all for hiring the best coach available as long as he's clean.

You simply cannot hire someone with zero experience as head coach family or not. JV with all due respect (and little is due) does not count.

The assistants would be pretty far down my list of importance. I'd take Chris Beard and whoever he wants to assist over worrying about retaining our guys, with all due respect to them. And yes I know he just signed with Texas.

The next choice at HC could either set the program back into mediocrity or immediately catapult it back to the top of the food chain. Who are the likely candidates and who would we like to see?
True. Even Bama football has been set back for a decade by 1 lousy HC hire. If UNC makes a stupid hire, on the heels of the past 2 seasons, the program could be in the dumps for years.

No one out there is gonna fix this dumpster fire in one or two seasons. Just be aware of that.
Basketball is easier to fix and fix quickly than football.

If the right coach is hired, Kessler might be back on the table. And we might land a true PG rather than a scoring guard trying to learn to be a PG, as well as a WG who really can shoot. And a wing or two who really can play sound perimeter D.

sorry but thats ignorant. We dont have an easy choice this time where its a top 5 coach that is also an alum. This train of thinking is what brought us Matt Doherty. Only this time there isnt another Roy out there to dig us out of the hole when it inevitably goes south
There is not. The most accomplished former UNC player coaching today is Wes Miller, who is the best HC in UNCG history. But he is not ready.

Literally no one does and that is what has to rule him out.
We know that he has not been successful as a shooting coach. Of course, that could be because Roy has persisted in focusing his recruiting on far too many athletes who simply are erratic shooters and always will be.

Maybe it's a buffer situation like Coach Smith wanted with Coach Guthridge. Let someone currently on the bench take over for a year or 2, then let Wes slide in.
