We will not lose out to the portal, only guy who may go portal is Trimble, but without RJ he gets all the PT he needs right here.

We may lose out to draft 2nd round guys

And yet . . . that 2nd half comeback almost succeeded. To me that suggests the components are good, but the coaching is suspect.

It's certainly possible that other good coaches would have done worse with these players. But I don't believe it. Do you?
Some would interpret that comeback as the opposite--the coach doing everything he can but just not having the horses to pull it through. How many shots did we miss at the rim when we had it down to 4? Can't blame Hubert for those.

He did put it together but who expected RJ to not have a season similar to last year when he usually couldn't miss, especially in the clutch? And, who knew that Cade Tyson would be a bust--he was rated in the top 5 portal transfers by many.
It cannot be questioned that Hubert and his staff have talent evaluation issues.

They thought Tyson could play, he couldn't. They thought Jalen Washington would be an effective C1, he wasn't.

Once those 2 things fell apart, at least my expectations changed pretty drastically. But the talent evaluation is on Hubert.

Again, I'm not saying Hubert's a good coach nor did he do a good job this season. My bigger questions with him have to do with talent evaluation than this season's outcome.

Him thinking Cade Tyson and Jalen Washington would be effective players did a ton of damage to this team's ceiling and floor.

I'm also not about being the University of Moral Victories. Enough of that crap, lol.

Again when it’s guys playing pick up ball Hair on fire use your skill set they were fine

When they looked forceably coached like the first half today it looks like he’s still coaching like Bacot is still here

He gets a pass on Tyson imo. Dang kid was recruited by several coaches and staffs. lol I just kept hoping he would at least hit the rim. No matter the competition most shooters can shoot or at least be close enough to be dangerous!!!

Cade looked mentally wrecked IMO I have not a clue if he was even evaluated other than if you miss you 3 your pulled

Or if you get burnt on D your pulled

With that way of looking at things everyone should have been dismissed from the team after the 1st half today
Right. Would it have been reasonable early in the season to sit players and hold them accountable? How about pull starters and play the bench for stretches, win or lose? Many believe this team is full of talent, we've actually seen it at times. Is it simply coaching or are there bigger issues within this group? It makes no sense how they can dominate when pushed and under pressure or just go through the motion and stink it up. I don't know, I'm just a fan trying to find find some kind of explanation.

Over his last 25 games, Seth Trimble shot 11/66 (16.7%) from 3PT. 39.1% FG.

I didn't realize how inefficient he was during the vast majority of the season. And that's including him finishing the regular season on a 4-game heater.

Ouch.
Hes one of the best athletes in the country. If we had crazy firepower on the rest of the court he could get by playing the jackie manuel role. When hes on the court with Cadeau its pretty easy to guard us

Hopefully a complete over haul .. Lubin & Powell is about the only 2 I'd take back .. EC is possible as long as we get the top portal 7 footer that can score 20 plus a game !

A new coach too.

What happened today is a travesty.

Ole Miss was avg.
Cmon. We've been less than average most of the year. You can't just show up and throw a switch and win just because you're wearing Carolina blue. We've not adapted to the new world that is college basketball in 2025. We have not managed the portal adequately and have not plugged gaps whereas other teams have unearthed gems. Bottom line as much as so many hoped we could keep it in the family... Hubert was not the right decision to make heading into this new era.

Changes need to happen from the bottom up. If not... the last four years will be positive net results compared to seasons to come.

The new GM should help with portal activity, but that is a big shift from how UNC traditionally has recruited on relationship. It’s just a different game now.

My biggest concern is coaching. We came out in a lot of games just not ready to play. That’s coaching. We had talent (lack of a true dominant big) to be a top 20 team and lost so many games that were close. That’s coaching. Being our coaching isn’t changing, I expect a similar ir worse year next year.

I don't mean to pile on Hubert. There are plenty of people that will do that here.

But how many times this season was UNC just horrendous and looked unprepared/unmotivated at the start of the game? They were so freaking passive and unenergetic to start today. Effort should never be a variable, but it especially shouldn't be a variable in the first 10 minutes of a game.

And yet during open practices leading up to the game Hubert was heard harping on bringing energy...

Trimble is one of first players I think of when I wonder how good Hubert and his staff are at developing players. He looked great after the off season, then started to fade at some point (before his injury).

Was he working with our coaches over the summer to get that good? If so, why did he fade during the season?

If he was working with someone else to get that good, maybe we should hire them?

Maybe "harping" isn't the best motivational strategy?

Another dubious motivational strategy I see on the sidelines is yelling, then stomping away, then stomping back and yelling some more.

I recall Roy doing more yelling toward the end of his career, and I don't think that was a good sign. (To be fair, maybe he wasn't doing more yelling and I was just noticing it more, but that's my impression.)

Not saying that harping and yelling are never appropriate. But those shouldn't be such prominent tools in the tool box, imo.

Can Seth succeed at the next level at SG? He's athletic, for sure, and a good defender. He finishes well around the rim for his size. But even if his 3-pt shot gets more reliable, is that enough?

If Seth thinks he needs to show PG chops to make it in the NBA, he needs to transfer to a good school where he can play PG and develop/showcase those chops.

Early this year, when he was hitting more confidently from outside and making good use of his anti-gravity boots, I thought he would have a good shot in the NBA, but then he faded. He's gotten better every year, so it won't surprise me if he starts well next season and doesn't fade. But will that be enough to get him on an NBA roster without PG chops?

so i get the hubert angst because i’ve had it myself…but when he’s interviewed in-game does he not reinforce what the problem is to the viewer and interviewer?…”play hard, get into their chest”, etc?

i understand it’s not just about matching an opponent’s toughness and will, but when is the last team we’ve all said yeah, they’re talented but nobody will play harder?…is he just not willing to be tougher on the athlete?…or is it the athlete?

Here’s the thing you aren’t understanding Coaches shouldn’t have to coach effort & energy.. A lot of defense is want to & focus which is up to the players. There was noticeable difference in the defense Tuesday to Friday. I can almost guarantee the Coaches did the same preparation.. this team didn’t have a leader and it showed. This team with a Cormac Ryan or Harrison Ingram would have been vastly different from an intensity standpoint

This new GM bandage is nothing more than lipstick on a pig. So we are being asked to buy the narrative that Hubert Davis is going to take an almost completely new lineup next season and teach them how to execute his offense that will secure a better season than 23-14. "That dog was never going to hunt" is what we will be saying next season. Lets just say the lineup is Lubin, Wilson, Powell, Trimble, and Cadeau. That is a very talented group that no one would project can score in the half court(sound familiar). Hubert has a system where the parts have to be specific and elite. Carolina has acknowledged the roster building failure to secure the correct parts so they are passing the buck to the new GM. So now Bubba clouds his reasoning by introducing another variable as the potential problem. Meanwhile, St Johns has turned its program around in just 2 seasons. Sure would like to know Bubbas true feelings about Roy demanding Hubert as my successor, 4 years later.

Tennessee and Kentucky's coaching staff also went after Tyson. Every recruiting site had him reasonably highly ranked in the portal rankings.

So Cade Tyson fooled a lot more than just the UNC coaching staff.
Or else Hubert ruined a perfectly good player with negative development.

Which players do you think Hubert has done a good job of developing over the last 4 years? He's had some very good players, but how many improved a lot because of his tutelage?

Brady and Harrison certainly improved their stock here, but how much of that was Hubert?

Armando improved, but how much of that was coaching, and how much just normal growth?

There are 2 guys on this team who Hubert might deserve some credit for them getting better: Lubin and Powell. Maybe just Lubin. Not Jackson. Not Cadeau. Not Trimble. Not Withers. Not Washington. Not Tyson. Maybe not even RJ.

I think it could be both.. it’s hard to say without seeing the player coach interactions but I could see HD being to nice to the players.. I also think there is a cultural change with players.. my wife deals with it coaching club volleyball .. kids just aren’t tough .. one of my ex teammates that lives in Dc heard that with AAU being so prevalent Kids don’t go play pick up anymore.. I remember going to park and if you lost you had to wait 3 games before playing again so you did whatever you could not to lose..

I’ve heard it said that some days you can’t throw it in the ocean from the boat. Offensive production ebbs and flows, but defensive is about effort and grit. You can always play good defense and that’s what keeps you in the game.

Here’s the thing you aren’t understanding Coaches shouldn’t have to coach effort & energy.

Sure, having another high energy, high quality starter would have helped. Duh. But we didn't.

What we had was a team that started slow out of the gate for most of the early season and too much of the late season against the better competition.

To me that suggests poor pregame prep. That's #2 on my gripe list, after poor player development. Since we're keeping Hubert and, in theory, bringing in better portal players, maybe we should be talking about getting Hubert some assistants who cover those weaknesses in his abilities.

Look, I don't expect Hubert to be good at every aspect of coaching. That would be unrealistic. Most people here point to bad roster construction as his main failing. Well, we're throwing money at that problem. I'm just saying we should address the player-development and pregame-prep shortcomings of this coaching staff as well.

You're right - that is what he says. But is that really the problem?

They ARE playing hard. We don't have a team of slackers. A few with limited motors, maybe, but no slackers.

They're doing what he coaches them to do. And too often in the first half, that isn't working very well. Sometimes when he tells them to do something else, we bounce back. That's not because they were coasting before but are serious now. It's because Hubert is a better in-game tactician than he is a pregame strategist. Or at least that's how it looks to me.

I want guys who want to play at Carolina, play hard and for the team. Put in the work, get results. That practicing early and doing shooting drills by yourself or with teammates.

Sure, having another high energy, high quality starter would have helped. Duh. But we didn't.

You clearly never played ball…not trying to be negative but you are missing my point.. there was a very noticeable difference in defensive intensity between Tuesday & Friday.. so I ask what was the difference cause I can almost guarantee the prep for both games was the same.. you can’t tell me guys were playing hard to start the game Friday.. they were allowing themselves to be screened instead of trying to beat the guy to spot and fight through the screen ..lack of defensive effort in on the players. So no the team wasn’t playing hard to start the game
