Back to the subject of next year's roster, one big question is who stays and who leaves from the current squad?

I'm not sure anyone other than Cade should leave, but I think several should test the waters - either draft or portal or both.

Correct me if I'm wrong but you can enter the draft without losing your spot on the roster. Whereas if you enter the portal, you risk your spot being filled before you change your mind. Which is to say that it's free to enter the draft, but could be a risk to test your portal value.

You clearly never played ball…not trying to be negative but you are missing my point.. there was a very noticeable difference in defensive intensity between Tuesday & Friday.. so I ask what was the difference cause I can almost guarantee the prep for both games was the same.. you can’t tell me guys were playing hard to start the game Friday.. they were allowing themselves to be screened instead of trying to beat the guy to spot and fight through the screen ..lack of defensive effort in on the players. So no the team wasn’t playing hard to start the game

Not buying what you're selling but since you seem to be claiming know-it-all status, please tell us what you think the difference was and how it should be addressed (and how it has nothing to do with coaching).

I want guys who want to play at Carolina, play hard and for the team. Put in the work, get results. That practicing early and doing shooting drills by yourself or with teammates.

Sounds good.

Which guys on the current team don't fit that bill? I mean we have had some players in the past who didn't seem to fit the team player bill, and we only hear about the extra work of a few players - but that doesn't mean the others don't put in that extra effort.

Starting next season I hope to have perfected my inaudible mini drones so I can spy on every practice from multiple angles. Then we'll have that information. ;-)

If your a ball dominate player which we had a few and one guy gets hot then you get to watch that one guy cook all night through ISO

We played a team that were the only team in the nation that had 6 player average double figures

It’s a catch 22 the ole miss team keeps everyone engaged offensively thinking they could get ball at anytime

We on the other hand give the ball off at the top of the key and that guy shoots 60 percent of the time

When Lubin got tired of being the handoff man and started basket searching he became a lot more valuable

Cmon. We've been less than average most of the year. You can't just show up and throw a switch and win just because you're wearing Carolina blue. We've not adapted to the new world that is college basketball in 2025. We have not managed the portal adequately and have not plugged gaps whereas other teams have unearthed gems. Bottom line as much as so many hoped we could keep it in the family... Hubert was not the right decision to make heading into this new era.

Changes need to happen from the bottom up. If not... the last four years will be positive net results compared to seasons to come.

That was about effort. Has nothing to do with making shots.

I think Hubert had to play more iso ball offense this season. This team didn't have enough skill up front to do the things UNC teams traditionally. Look at when Withers really shined this season. He was mainly parked in the corner offensively. Anything else he tried to do was really inconsistent. He tried an iso post up over a guard today and you could see a charge coming from a mile away.

I know some have said play Washington at the 4.... Idk. Maybe Washington just isn't all that good?

His hands were tied this season. Now, not saying his offense was good enough. I think if you're going to be really small, your offense needs to be really creative predicated on player movement and misdirection. That wasn't the design. Once he decided to go bigger, I thought most of the offense would be getting a matchup and attacking the matchup 1-on-1, then kick it out to a shooter if there's help. There wasn't much layering to this offense, but it also wasn't the most talented offense we've ever seen.

There are people here that said if UNC played traditional UNC basketball, this would be a top 10 team are worst. I think that's absolute insanity, lol. This is one of the most limited UNC teams that I can recall.

The offense has been the same.

Hell we barely used Bacot when he was here in the end which hurt that team last year.

Ole Miss was avg.

In the SEC, Ole Miss was average. If Ole Miss had been the ACC's 18th member, Ole Miss would have finished 2nd.

On the other hand, if UNC been the SEC's 17th member, Hubert would have needed luck to have his team finish 14th, maybe even luck to be 15th.

Again how many different rosters will be blamed for not bringing “energy, effort and toughness” (HDs canned answer from a couple years ago)? UNC just happens to have another soft, lazy group? Over the long run what happens on the court is either coached or allowed. Core part of the job is knowing your group and finding a way to give them the best chance at success, which includes demeanor.

I think #1 issue is putting players at their proper positions and keeping them there. That means Seth at the 2, Drake at the 3, JWash at the 4, that is simply where their games fit the best, where they match up best. I very much want all those 3 as well as Cadeau back for next season. I want James Brown back and I already consider High as on the team again and beck. I want BOTH James and High to bulk up and get ready to play deep paint. I think hyper critical would be getting weekly feed back from the S/C and nutrition staff thatshows the exact progression week to week this off season. For example, let's take James Brown and let's say he right now is pushing around 150lbs bench press for a clean 10 reps, I want to know how long it takes hi to get to 160lbs with the same 10 clean reps, then 170lbs ect, I need to see that constant progression. If I am not able to see that constant progression then I may need to portal in a kid that can show me that. If you are in need of adding both bulk and strength, dramatic needs for Jalen, Brown, and High then this is what it takes, vary things with medicine ball tosses over a volley ball net, ect. Lots of things you can do and need to do because you can easy plateau if you just do the same things. You must mix in flexibility with the weights, you don't want a kid getting stiff, you want him to bulk up but remain flexible.

Now what has that got to do with who will be on our roster next season you ask? Well right off it tells me who is really putting in the work needed, if you are not progressing you are not working to your max, if you half ass it there you half ass it everywhere else. If you half ass it then I need to replace you, I am not seeing players that are physically developed, that needs to change and change today. I think this is a major tool to help me understand exactly who needs to be replaced and what my portal need is in a clear way.

Right now I think we have 2 drastic portal needs, #1 a big man (I prefer 2) that has the length as well as the physical stature and aggression to battle other big time centers. I need warriors that are equipped with the ability to battle thru physical contact, I don't need warriors that are not equipped with the physical ability, like a thin JWash at the 5 and I don't need guys that are physically equipped but have a passive mindset. In other words I want a guy more like Shefflin than a Hunter Dickenson like prima dona.

I think we drastically MUST get a PG, not a combo but a real PG to back up Cadeau, really hate that we missed Jasper Johnson. If we take a shooter, the mold and frankly the guy to me would be McNeeley, he just got a new agent, may indicate he is open to the portal, if so get all over him and simply offer what it takes. If I am taking a shooter for this level of play it has to be a guy proven to be a great shooter at this level of play, I think that is where we missed it with Tyson, he was not proven at this level.

So I want 2 big men to portal in along with Wilson and I want a PG back up that is starter quality, could we make a sell to back up the 1 and 2, like say a Nigel Pack?

2 seasons ago I was really surprised how many people wanted Caleb Love back due to his “experienced talent.” I was even more surprised how much freak out there was over losing a bunch of merely average basketball players.

This offseason, I’m surprised with some similar opinions. UNC had a historic season in terms of losses in a season. I don’t think the solution is to just play Seth at the 2. I think he’s a wing anyway.

I’ll have deep concerns offensively if Cadeau, Seth, and Powell are the starting 1-3 next season. Unless this team decides its going to be a defense first team, I’m not sure it will work. They’re obviously 3 unwilling shooters. I won’t mind if Trimble is off the bench, but I’m guessing he’s going to want to start.

The other problem is all 3 of them have very slow releases. Cadeau is not a reactionary instinctive shooter. He waits and waits and then shoots. Seth’s windup takes a month. Powell takes a while plus is longer so it will take more time. That means the 3 of them will struggle to score off the bounce with jumpers because their shot takes a while to get off.

If its Cadeau-Trimble-Powell-Wilson, they’re going to need an elite offensive rebounding 5 because they aren’t going to be a super efficient first shot offensive team.

Now that lineup projects to have a lot of defensive upside. But when was the last time UNC was built on defense and that was their identity? Maybe a little bit of last year but before then, ever under Roy? That hasn’t been UNC’s DNA post 2000. Also, it wasn’t this team’s DNA so why bring everyone who played major minutes back?

It’s puzzling to me. I think this team needs to look very different in numerous places. I won’t say exactly what kind of player because that depends.

Tennessee and Kentucky's coaching staff also went after Tyson. Every recruiting site had him reasonably highly ranked in the portal rankings.

So Cade Tyson fooled a lot more than just the UNC coaching staff.

This is true. Hubert and a lot of coaches missed on Tyson. Did he start at the beginning of the season? I can't think of any other player in our history who bombed that bad.

Can Seth succeed at the next level at SG? He's athletic, for sure, and a good defender. He finishes well around the rim for his size. But even if his 3-pt shot gets more reliable, is that enough?

If Seth thinks he needs to show PG chops to make it in the NBA, he needs to transfer to a good school where he can play PG and develop/showcase those chops.

Trimble had a good season this year in his role as role player.

Are you confident that Cadeau-Trimble is a good enough offensive backcourt? Also add Wilson whose defense is likely ahead of his offense?

Seth shot 39% overall and 17% 3PT his last 25 games. He was as up and down as anyone on this team

I think they need to upgrade significantly. If you start Cadeau-Trimble-Powell-Wilson are you sure that simply an upgraded 5 will make the difference? Idk about that.

I especially don’t think UNC will have a serious contending for anything season if Trimble is a top 2 option. IMO he’s a 4th or 5th option on really good teams.

Do you feel warm and cozy about the program now?

Yes, I saw the run in Davis' first season. The ending set a national record: biggest choke job in an NCAAT championship game ever. I think that loss to KU after such a huge lead set the tone for the Davis tenure: wild swings of inconsistency. Start off great and end as crisp, or start as crap and end with a blaze that cannot last long enough to win a big game.

Like the common basketball-firster, you fail to grasp what anything means. ACC basketball now sucks in a way that even I never predicted. But the reason it now sucks is what I have been predicting since early in this century: football being so much bigger and more powerful than. basketball in the market means that unless a league is very healthy in what makes CFB wealth and power (lots TV v viewers for football regular season games, which gauarbtees the biggest TV deals), th league entually is going to see economic pressures that begin too destroy its basketball. The hubris of basketball-firtsers is that they never can allow themselves to see any of that, even when it unfolds in their faces. Cuse, for example, has a football fan base still living in the glory of the BE. They still think that all that basketball history can save Orange football.

For UNC basketball, all that is compounded by the arrogance of The UNC Basketball Family as sacred cow. So there never was going to be a real search to replace Roy: Roy was going to get to name his beloved pet: Hubert Davis.

If you think that Davis producing all the top and odopwn that is THE mark of his 4 years is going to keep UNC making the top few basketball programs in the country then I have no idea how top get you to see reality. But I'll give it another shit: look at the SEC. All that CFB money and power has meant that the SEC has final had all the cash to invest in basketball fully league wide, even at Ole Miss. And that means an SEC that is about 3 times better than ACC basketball. And I am certain that no SEC AD would be happy to think about spending his new basketball money to hire Hubert Davis.

Look also at the BT with all its Old Money CFB wealth and power. Its basketball is also MUCH better than ACC basketball. That disparity is going to continue to grow.

There are two basic issues here. 1 - UNC either acts wisely according to recognition that football is not just King; Football is Autocrat. Or else UNC basketball will continue to become run of the mill. In addition to UNC altering what it emphasizes, there is the matter of league. Either UNC will successfully lead the ACC to revamp itself to become better attuned to what makes football wealth and power (boot Wake and BC and Cuse, for example, while replacing with large state schools with real football pulses and fans) or the ACC will soon become a massive weight that will drag all UNC sports down. If there is no will to save the ACC that way, then UNC must soon join either SEC or BT. AS I hate both, I would strongly prefer UNC leading to save the ACC by pruning out the dead weight in terms of what makes CFB wroth and power and replacing it.

#2 issue is that I do not think there is any solid basis to think that Hubert ever can be better than a pure mediocre HC in a truly top tier basketball conference. Both SEC and BT would eat Hubert alive and spit him out as worthless gristle.

Showing compassion to a player who just made a heartbreaking mistake is good.

It doesn't make up for coaching that same player poorly for 2 years.

If I'm looking to transfer, I'm looking for a coach that will develop and showcase my skills and teach me how to win - not a shoulder to cry on when I fail.

It's not a selling point.

Arrogance (which in many cases, has always been there) and a reluctance to change, have this program headed to mediocrity.

Beating average and below average teams the last three weeks of the season was fools gold. This team did not deserve to make the tournament....period. Beating a terrible SDSU team prooved they could just beat another average team. Again, when playing a team with a pulse, they simply could not get it done.

We have a coach in over his head with a staff that is also ill prepared and not able to develop talent nor make in game adjustments.

Another dubious motivational strategy I see on the sidelines is yelling, then stomping away, then stomping back and yelling some more.

I recall Roy doing more yelling toward the end of his career, and I don't think that was a good sign. (To be fair, maybe he wasn't doing more yelling and I was just noticing it more, but that's my impression.)

Not saying that harping and yelling are never appropriate. But those shouldn't be such prominent tools in the tool box, imo.

Right on. Frequent hair on fire meltdowns lose the team quickly. I sense they get tired of hearing it when used too often and they tune job out.

And rah rah and yelling anger is NO substitute for x and o strategy amd having right players on the team - and in the game in right role at right time to take advantage of opponents and win at or above expectations

in hubert's case I think it was his personal relationship with roy as much as being an alum. roy is insane about personal loyalty, like rooting for his previous school kansas after he had taken the carolina job.
