He's not a good fit for what we're looking for in a starting center. He did make sense as a stretch 4 if Wilson decommitted.

I'm taking this as a sign that we will reach out to top portal players who are not interested in playing for a former "blue blood" which is on a downward trajectory, coached by a non-elite staff who will not develop them to reach the NBA. Just like last portal season, this is likely the first of many whiffs on top players for UNC. Tyson should stick around as he may get some PT out of necessity.
It is not about the NIL money, as I'm sure the top players would take the same or even less to play for a better team/coaching staff than UNC. Tanner and his staff are in the process of vetting out the guys that may fit what we are looking for, you take a list of 10-20 players that may fit what you are looking for and boil that list down to your top 5 or less, guys who have a level of interest and who are looking for $$$ numbers that work. Because we did initial vetting on a guy does not mean he was deemed as a guy we were going to offer. Names are going to fall out for what ever reason. Dent fell out because he just wanted to go back to the west coast for example.
This is exactly how the GM gig is supposed to work, rather than have Hubert out here investing all his recruiting capital in 3 guys that we really had no real shot at, the list is being weeding down to guys we do have a legit shot at. Personally, I would take Budinga over any guy in the portal right now but do we really have a legit shot at him or would recruiting him be a waste of time better spent elsewhere, the vetting tells us that, we wasted a lot of time last portal.

This 100% spot on but I am willing to bet you will have 10 posters ignore every logical, fully articulated fact above with some rant about how no one wants to play for Hubert, we are no longer a blue blood or (the oh-so-tired), "we have no NIL".
For the record, I said the same about wanting Bidunga when he first entered the portal. Reading the subsequent reporting, doesn't sound like he would be worth the time investment.

In the real estate world there are 3 main things that are vital. First you MUST have a seller, second is you must have a buyer, and third you must have an appraiser. The appraiser is the guy that establishes the $$$ value of the property, he does not favor the seller or the buyer, he simply says this property is worth this amount now you go fight the rest of it out.
Today's college revenue sports are working the same way, the school is the buyers of talent represented by Hubert in our case, the kid is the seller of his talent represented by himself and his agent, and the GM is the appraiser that establishes fair value for the kid's services. As dumb as it would be for the kid to be the appraiser, just as dumb is having the coach be the appraiser when it comes to $$$. Dean didn't have to deal with this, Roy got out because he was starting to have to deal with this. With NIL AND the transfer any time you want stuff now in place a GM is as important as the wheels on your car, it is no longer optional, not if you want to be competitive.
