Now GT beats Clemson?

Shooting 36.7% FG isn't going to win you a lot of games in this conference, add in that GT had a 40-29 advantage in rebounds makes for overcoming that bad shooting % even more difficult.

I like Pastner, IMO GT got a petty good coach in this hire . .

Sorry folks....IMO Ga Tech is the worst team in the ACC in the last 20 years.

Does anyone have Roy's record against GT since his return to UNC . . ?

I know at one time he was 6-8 but that was several years back . .

TIA

Really have to disagree with you about GT, Steat. They have the best coach they've has since Cremmins. They'll upset some more teams yet.

I rest my case Arch. Too painful to keep reminding myself that UNC lost to this year's version of Ga Tech.

...in ATL.
Apparently our 2 ACC road wins are nothing to sneeze at these days.
I was going to create a separate post on this yesterday, but its appropriate to add here. I think Adam Lucas said ACC teams other than Heels were 1W and 16L (1-16) on the road in ACC before this week.

What is the cause of this? Probably several factors contribute. (with my take on % each factor makes of the phenomenon in brackets)

1) I'm no sports psychologist, but I'm sure having your crowd cheer for you helps your confidence, motivation, etc. (40%)
2) not having to travel, to the extent that travel wears a team down (15%)
3) familiarity with the arena, backdrop for shooting accuracy (20%)
4) officiating - see my sports psych comment above - but I just wonder if the home teams generally get more favorable officiating. Not intentionally, but just subliminally I wonder if home crowd reactions to calls creep into officials minds, and they are more likely to make calls that favor the home team, to avoid the in-game abuse from the in-arena fans. Or just get caught up in the excitement of the fans, which leads them to call something in the direction of the positive emotion. I think this happens (subliminally) for any/all home teams, including UNC at home. (25%)

What are other's thoughts on these and other factors? I wonder what the 1-16 record would be if teams played on neutral sites, or in empty arenas.

All those things can be part of it. Something else I would add is there is more parity this season at the "bottom" of the league. In other words, nobody sucks. Recent doormats GaTech, BC, Clemson and VaTech are very competitive and you get em at their place and those factors you mentioned can make the difference.

Couple other factors I would add, first many teams like to feast on a weaker out of conference schedule and selected road trips that are hedged in their favor. So going in to conference play their win loss records will be bloated by a good number of wins that they should have without being really tested against a strong opponents on a hostile floor.

Second, the ACC has always tested its member teams top to bottom, even the worst ACC team would win or be top 3 in many if not most conferences. Opposing ACC teams have the advantage of having played against most of the other ACC players and coaches, they have a better book on ACC opponents than they can on out of conference programs.

Now concerning the question of "home cooking" by the refs, yeah, refs do tend to allow themselves to be influenced by the home crowd and the more hostile that home crowd is the more they tend to get the 50/50 call. Another factor is that the team that builds a big lead can see a come back assisted by the refs at times and especially if that having to comer back team is the home team. But that is not something new, it has been that way for most all of the 50 or so years I have been a fan. It is one of those aspects of a game that you have to accept because as long as humans ref the game they are going to be influenced by these things.

There are refs out there that just do not like certain coaches or programs and refs that do tend to bend over backwards for some coaches at some programs. Refs do as well have their own book on players they have ref prior, this guys tends to do this and at ties will blow the whistle because they expect a foul before it happened and maybe it didn't. But again, this is not new, any UNC fans that have been fans for multiple years that watch us go in to Cameron and play duke know exactly what I mean, the 50/50 call is not going to go our way at a key moment, it is part of what you have to over come to get a win there.
