Numb Heels Struggling To Process Sinking Situation

"...the 80-72 loss to the No. 15 Hurricanes came on a night the Heels shot 16.1 percent from the perimeter, assisted on only 20.7 percent of their buckets, got just six field goal attempts from Bacot, snared only 24.3 percent of their missed shots, had two fast break points, and the bench was 1-for-9 shooting in 26 minutes."

YIKES!

"...Armando Bacot, Caleb Love, and RJ Davis – seemingly had no answers for why the Tar Heels lost yet again, and offered minimal suggestions on how to right their sinking ship."

This is disturbing. Not that they are demoralized. Who wouldn't be? But that they don't have ideas.

I've been thinking it might be a time for one of those team meetings away from the coaches to hash things out. And maybe it is. But if they don't have any ideas, what good will that do?

Might be worth a try, though. Maybe the non-stars have ideas.

If the answers come from the players, why do you need the HC?

How often did Dean Smith need players to tell him what needs to be done with the team to maximize its potential?
As I mentioned in another thread recently, Dean would occasionally turn to another coach for input. John Thompson is the one who comes to mind but there may have been others.

Is there another coach that Hubert should be calling?

What's Larry Brown doing these days? Just kidding. Or am I?

It's true though. Why are we continuing to ask these young men the same, tough questions, but Hubert for the most part has gotten a pass? To pretend he's had his feet to the fire up to this point is comical. He rarely fields a tough question and when he does, he gives some cliche coach quote about getting back to work and being better the next time out and the reporters let him off the hook. Rinse and repeat.

If I'm Hubert, I'm reaching out to Roy, Jay Wright, Mark Few, whoever will take my damn call for HELP because he clearly needs it.

I thought of Jay Wright, too. I assume he would want to reach out to a friend, and don't know if they are friends. Hubert is said to be a hugely personable guy, so I assume he has friends who coach. But does he have any friends who are good coaches?

I'd think his time at ESPN allowed him to connect with some of the best coaches in the country. Roy's network is also pretty impressive so at the very least, Roy should be able to get him linked up with Izzo, Few or Wright.

I wonder how much Hubert is talking to Roy? Because I see very little that strikes me as relating to how Roy wanted his teams to play, it is almost the anti Roy scheme? It strikes me more as Hubert has formed this opinion of how he thinks we should play based on how the NBA plays, thing is you have to have 5 NBA players on the court to execute what the NBA does. What do you think the results will be when you are asking your players to do things they are not good at?

What would be a better scheme for our players?

How would they do if they had been coached by Tony Bennett all year, for example?

Or if they used John Chaney's matchup zone defense?

Or played the Princeton offense?

Getting back to Tony Bennett for a second . . . If he took over this team, which would he be more likely to say:

"Wow, look at all the talent I have to work with"

- OR -

"OMG, can anyone on this team play defense?"

Maybe both?

Who would Bennett start?

I have to admit back in the days when Dean was coaching I would wonder what would life be like without Dean….man I have to say I never thought it would be this bad. But ever since Dean retired, and other than a couple of good years from Roy, Carolina basketball has never been the same. There are games that we frequently lose that dean would have never lost. I miss the “real Carolina basketball”. I miss the master Dean Smith.

It is bad that the kids seem to be letting off court stuff impact their on court play. I still have hope they will turn it around and I think winning out from here is a possibility! Roy couldn't get these kids to play any better so I don't think a coach with no relationship would help! Hubs will have his guys in place next season and even more help coming in the next. HIs ability to coach can not be gauged until he as his type players and time to grow into the job!

If you've listened to our pods or had premium access you'd know the off-the-court stuff is not an issue at all. Whatever happened took place last summer and was dead and buried by the time practice started in September. The only issues this team is dealing with is basketball related.

I know a lot of it has to do with certain peeps not contributing offensively and not having proper defensive instincts. I also have friends who played both football and bball at UNC and they maintain that some of the "issues" keep resurfacing. I refuse to engage in specifics, and I really hope that your answer is the correct one AJ!

BTW: I have considered Premium and even won it last season in our contest, but I am slow to embrace change and this space is familiar to me. I appreciate the value of it since I have had it on TOS and I may move back to Premium here next season. I am more willing to move now because this space is rapidly becoming more like the extreme reactionary and relentlessly negative environment that made me leave TOS!

I have an idea.. Give Puff or Nickel 25 minutes minimum in the starting 4 spot.. Have Nance come off the bench to give the 4 and 5 man a break and give him no more than 20 minutes per game.

Took me a while to figure out that idea.. NOT!

It's not rocket science. Hubert is afraid to upset Nance. I would be more worried about upsetting the fan base, losing players to the transfer portal, and putting myself in the hot seat, than I would be worried about upsetting 1 player who won't be around next season anyways.

Bennett would likely first wonder why the players were not taught proper defense at the start of their college careers, and why the previous coaching staff did not relentlessly practice proper defense, so they could play proper defense in games.

We have enough but not stellar athleticism and skills, but we clearly and unquestionably have one of the worst defensive teams in the P5.

Is there a list somewhere other than Pomeroy that rates teams on D?

Pomeroy ranks us 49th on D, but I know some here don't like his numbers.

On another site I found DRtg numbers for our individual players - which they describe as estimating the number of points the player allows per 100 possessions. I have no idea how they calculate that.

Here are those numbers for players with double-digit minutes.

A few surprises. I would never have thought of Pete as 4th best, for example, or that Caleb would be tied with Seth.

PlayerMPGDRtg
Leaky31.298.9
Armando31.699.2
Puff15.8102.0
Pete30.0102.4
RJ34.5103.3
Caleb35.8105.0
Seth11.3105.0
D'Marco11.1105.9

I'm assuming less than 1 point per possession is pretty dang good! Seth's numbers would be pretty skewed because he gets short shifts against the best scorers on the other team. He subs for Leaky on D and for the guards as well. Caleb's number are most likely trending in the right directions since he has stepped up his D lately. I wonder if fouls are somehow factored in because this would affect Puff.

AND I disagree with the idea our coaches are not teaching proper Defensive techniques! Roy and Hubs have been trying to get them to play consistent D, but some of our guys lose focus at times! Nance patently refuse to hedge properly and rotates at least a step slow when in the paint. He also seldom blocks out, especially if his man is away from him. Caleb and RJ will play stellar D in stretches and matador at the worst possible times! Seth is a natural defender but has lost confidence in his shot. Leaky is consistently good but suffers from guarding stars who sometimes get the benefit of the doubt in fouls! (when healthy) Bacot is as good at D as he is on O, but with 60% of his team letting their men go, he has to help too much. On D: Styles drifts, TNick is a year away due to lacking instincts, Dunn is close but needs seasoning/strength, Washington gets bullied, McKoy is undersized, and Puff works hard but is a foul per minute!

I have yet to see any objective evidence that our players have been taught how to play defense or have practiced proper defense between games, or most importantly, been benched for playing poor defense. Defensive statistics don't lie. And HD and his coaching staff are ultimately responsible for our consistently poor defense.

To be fair, we had a LOT of good years from Roy.

What exactly would evidence of what the coaches teach in practice look like??? Have you coached anything higher than Parks and Rec bball? If you have, then you know that sometimes when under stress players lose sight of what the coaches teach and revert to either hero ball or hesitate! Some peeps never get out of that rut also! 2 coaches and 1 of them in the HOF couldn't cure these guys from these lapses, but peeps lay it all on our current coach.....sounds like either ignorance or an agenda!

You keep denigrating anyone who even remotely criticizes Hubert. The agenda appears to be yours.
